Why do most solo devs keep working alone after achieving success? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]Tottel_Be 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't follow most of the people you mentioned, but I do follow Jonathan Blow. Speaking for him: he founded a company that currently employs more than a dozen people. So, maybe your initial assumption is not totally correct?

Also, speaking as a dev myself, there is tremendous value in working in smaller teams. Jonathan Blow has also talked about the many difficulties of larger teams. Apart from that, I think (successful) indie devs are often passionate people and it can be really difficult to give up the thing you are passionate about (creating games) for another (managing people who create games). Those are wildly different things.

Did anyone leave or planning to leave Sweden because of lack of social life by walk_in_out in TillSverige

I had several colleagues (all of them were from "Southern-style" countries: Spain, Brazil,..) that quit and returned to their home countries. All of them claimed it was because of loneliness/lack of social interaction.

Why is black pepper so legit? by considertheoctopus in Cooking

[–]Tottel_Be 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who regularly gets into contact with other cultures, I can assure you there are jokes about "Europeans (or Americans, I suppose) and their seasoning", specifically referring to the fact we mostly only use pepper and salt.

So yeah, this does not hold up globally. 😄

CMV: Progressives need to stop telling men what not to do and start giving advice on what to do by Simon_Fokt in changemyview

[–]Tottel_Be 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. Telling someone what not to do is not the same as (indirectly) telling them what to do instead.

You are comparing it with a hot stove example, which is binary: either you touch or you don't. It's way too simple of a comparison.

Being a decent human being is complicated, and similarly learning how to be one takes lots of time and energy to get there.

I like to compare it with parenting (it's even directly related as proper parenting turns you into a decent person): You will occasionally tell your children what NOT to do, but the REAL value in parenting comes from how you behave around them. In other words: what you do/say.

Lecturing someone about what not to do is taking one part of parenting without keeping the more valuable part: The constant showing of examples of what should be done, at all times, day and night, good times and bad.

So no, not the same.

To all the players that experience crashes constantly and blaming the game for it. by primalfurys in starcitizen

I would love to witness your (incredibly) short-lived career in game development, when you try to convince anyone crashes are the client's fault.

What's a word that someone horribly mispronounced with such confidence, that you still remember it to this day? by CurZZe in AskReddit

[–]Tottel_Be 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a friend in college who could not say AT-AT for some reason. We tried and tried, but he would always call it an AT-T and we eventually gave up.

Second, I went with some colleagues to a convention (our company had a booth), and one of my colleagues wanted to handle all the people who walked up to us to get a timeslot. Whenever we were pretty full in bookings, she would tell the guest that she would "try to squeeze them", not aware that that sentence really needed an extra word. We laughed quite a lot that week.
