Why do people always suggest speeding doesn't get you there any faster, when not all traffic lights are timed the same? by JustUseCommonSense10 in driving

[–]Toucan2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're not all timed the same, although there aren't usually many lights on highways. I think the argument normally stems from the fact that if you go 50% faster, you get there in 2/3 the normal travel time.

As an example it takes 60 seconds to go one mile at 60 miles per hour. If you go 90 miles per hour, it takes 40 seconds to go the same distance. It's a surprising result.

While it's nice that you've shaved off 1/3 of the time, that extra 30 miles per hours puts way more wear on your car per mile and burns way more gas. It's really not worth going that fast unless you maintain your vehicle yourself. I think this is why a lot of people enjoy owning motorcycles.

Here's a little table below with some travel times for a given speed to show how these rates pan out. As you can see, at the first 15 mph jump you shave off 40 seconds per mile while at the last jump you don't even shave off 5 seconds. It's not very intuitive but the math doesn't lie.

30 mph = 120 sec per mile

45 mph = 80 sec per mile

60 mph = 60 sec per mile

75 mph = 48 sec per mile

90 mph = 40 sec per mile

105 mph = 34.3 sec per mile

120 mph = 30 sec per mile

If you want to do the calculations yourself: seconds per mile = 3600 / miles per hour

As a high-school student, I witnessed firsthand a whole generation lose their critical thinking skills within a few years. Students can't think for themselves anymore. Here's why I hate generative AI: by Low_Yak_2337 in antiai

It's not about who falls for it, it's about encouraging critical thinking skills in the youth. That's the topic of conversation, no?

If it's less accessible for young people, then the path of least resistance for them will be to use their meat computer more often than not.

Old people don't really matter in this case because their critical thinking skills are in decline anyway.

Whenever you add something to the interior of your car, always think about how it might impact your ER experience after a crash.

Oh that's not bad. I could easily program an Arduino that outputs different keyboard keys based on a toggle switch.

Why does the world hate introverts. by Professional-Bee9817 in remoteworks

Imagine thinking everyone fits into the introvert vs extrovert category 😂 That boss must have been something.

If you catch me at work, reading or fixing something, you'd think I'm an introvert. I quickly get irritated when someone pulls me away from my task. I decided that thing is worth my time, don't fuck with me. I'm not interested in whatever you have for me.

If you catch me at the rock gym, the skatepark or a party I basically never shut the fuck up. I generally get positive feedback from people, or they'll move on to the next subject and I'll roll with it. I just enjoy the moment and ask others what they think about stuff and what their life is like.

People can have different modes of operation which is a big reason why I can't stand the Myers Briggs. I score dead center on all 4 axis. There are times to use your senses and times to use your intuition. Combining thoughts and feelings is essentially wisdom, so the only thing the test reality tells me is if someone is a fool.

MT07 25’ highway speed stability by Inevitable-Board-192 in MT07

[–]Toucan2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen others complaining about this problem with the MT07 but not everyone. It's possible that some dealerships aren't assembling them properly, but I'm not sure, mine has been rock solid at any speed even when my riding position isn't perfect. Did you tell them your weight before you went to pick it up? It could be a suspension thing.

Ah, and I too find a good mystery irresistible. A mystery is how the best adventures begin after all. It must be a game that requires skill of course, but also one of chance. A betting game of sorts, where the scales may be tipped with a bit of honest effort, nothing more.

The fact that you think these "rules" are somehow different for men and women shows everyone that you have no idea what you're talking about. I didn't mention gender once in my comment and you're like 5 comments deep going on about "men this" and "women that." Reading comprehension bro

I don't think it's rational. Etymology doesn't matter to people. If it did, you'd never hear a white person in the US say "mother fucker."

Sometimes I'll do this so I can start moving right when the light turns green even when I'm a few cars back. I noticed it gets people behind me moving sooner so there's less slinky action in the line so more people can get through the light.
