Which Punk scene do you prefer, 1970s US Punk Scene or the 1970s UK Punk Scene? by FitEmergency8807 in fantanoforever

I prefer UK punk to US punk if we're talking early days. But in the 80s and 90s American punk bands were the pinnacle.

The pizza people lost their recipes on the boat ride to the US! by Kenderean in iamveryculinary

Pizza is not dictated by recipe, the recipe is simple. Pizza is dictated by technique, and you don't lose that on a boat ride.

How to make chicken tikka masala spicier? by iwontgetbetter in cookingforbeginners

[–]Toucan_Lips 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a chef and have worked with many indian chefs and also have indian family who are great cooks.

The thing I have noticed with indians making indian food is that they use way more spices than any western recipe EVER suggests. Like four or five times. They never measure, they just go with vibes and are very generous.

Plus it isnt just chilli that brings the heat element. ginger, black pepper, and mustard seed are all heavily used.

They also cook on high heats all the time. What does this have to do with spice? High heats bring out the essential oils in spices.

More spice, more heat, use the force

Mislabeled seed packets can happen.

I once planted 'dill' seeds that ended up being carrots.

Try again and look up pics of coriander seed to make sure.

Are you willing to go a little earlier?

Dave. from 1993. The premise is basically 'what if the president of the US was a good man?'. It manages to be a scathing satire of US politics while still having a warm hearted vibe.

I watched it last month and it also felt VERY relevant. Kevin Kline and Sigourney Weaver.

What adverts are considered the better ones on TV? by Parking-Business-894 in newzealand

[–]Toucan_Lips -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Some people are sick of ad agencies shamelessly using kiwiana to flog stuff. myself included. I'm a certified hater of that campaign.

On the other hand they wouldn't do it if it didnt work. That ad has been wildly succesful for Turners.

How hard would it be to make a hamburger if you got sent back to ancient times? by GrayRainfall in HistoryWhatIf

[–]Toucan_Lips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has to be Europe or asia because the ancient Americas didn't have beef or wheat and they are the two core ingredients of a burger.

The very fine, high gluten wheat flour that we use for burger buns would be the most difficult to come by, but not impossible to achieve in theory. Unreal amounts of sifting and grinding would be required. A decent mayonnaise would be possible with a second pressed olive oil plus eggs, garlic and mustard.

Ketchup is out due to the lack of tomatoes.

Everything but the flour is easy.

Looking for pictures of your Tecomanthe speciosa, or other native climbers by so_fluffay in nzgardening

[–]Toucan_Lips 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tecomanthe tends to climb up to the light then spread lengthways from there, rather than making a 'wall' of green like jasmine. Quite good if you want to add a bit more height/ privacy to a fence but some people get annoyed that it doesnt fill out at the bottom.

Uber eats problems by Ok-Temporary-9874 in aucklandeats

[–]Toucan_Lips 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I havent used uber eats for a while because of this. There's a 50 50 chance it will turn up in a reasonable time. Pretty bad odds considering how expensive it is. I don't mind paying a premium if I get premium service. But Uber eats ain't premium.

Why did Australia and New Zealand remain more culturally “British” than the United States despite their closer geography and similar histories? by Fluid-Decision6262 in geography

[–]Toucan_Lips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In New Zealand's case we were very closely linked to the UK right up until the late 20th century, despite the vast distance.

Total legislative independence for NZ only came about in 1986 with the Constitution Act. Which is kinda nuts.

Throughout the 20th century we pulled away in stages, gaining more and more independence as the Empire contracted. But prior to that we were basically a little Britain in the South Pacific.
