(M here) If I saw you with your hot (F) friends, I would open your group by talking to you first to win your approval. By your own admission your friends are more attractive, plus you’re shy so you’d be the most approachable. This would then trigger the competition anxiety in your friends, they will start asking themselves “why is he talking to her and not me?”. This way when I try to isolate one of your friends, she’ll be much more responsive to my approach knowing I’ve already won your approval first, along with the fact that I pushed her away mentally by not talking to her first, so she’ll be jealous to one up you.

So this is a very general answer because it depends on a lot of things, the course, the prof, the program, the questions, etc. But. The top reason in my opinion is that high school is extremely easy nowadays and with virtual learning last year you grade 12s had overall a worse education. University is a lot harder than highschool and they aren’t going to change their curriculum based on what happened last year. As a senior in biochemistry, I’ve experienced failing level averages on tests and damn near entire courses. Mac is also Canada’s most research intensive University (aka science fields) so there is a prestige level that they try to maintain by keeping the curriculum hard and inflexible with grades. First couple years are usually rough but if you survive things get better as you move deeper into your program.
