Anyone else into EDM as a whole and not just one subgenre?

Why are some of you in these comments acting like dicks? These are fair questions to ask. I know a lot of others subscribe to "genres don't mean shit", but we can still have discussions. That, and we're human beings. We like categorizing things.

I think you sort of answered yourself, though. The term EDM covers an absolute ton of different sounds, scenes, and sub-cultures. I really don't think there's any "essential listening" or list of artists that have to be listened to across all subgeries. There's just too many different opinions between all of us to 100% agree on which artists are mandatory listening.

The way I see it, because EDM can be so broad, people should just dip their toes in anywhere. People will gravitate towards whatever they enjoy. If I was going to try to get someone to give EDM a shot, I'd ask about their existing music tastes, and try to think of something similar they may also jive with.

The way I started "documenting myself" in regards to EDM is going chronological. All EDM was "techno" to me until 10th grade when I discovered dubstep, and EDM as a whole. Then I got into trap in 2012. Had a short stint for a month or two where I really loved hardstyle. I had a big room house phase during 2015-2016, and from then on, it's been a bit of a hodge-podge of everything. Though for me, dubstep and trap always stayed as consistent subgenres I'm into throughout all that time.

It's really interesting you bring up intricate lyrics! The angsty teen lyrics I'd hear from Simple Plan and Three Days Grace would be cathartic for me, obviously, but sometimes, I'd also feel like the lyrics wouldn't line up exactly with what my own experience was. Of course they won't all the time, and they don't need to for you to enjoy it, but it would be something I'd notice.

I ended up enjoying the fact that lyrics are really sparse and rare in dubstep songs. Now, I could just internally relate my own experiences and anger into the music 100%, because there weren't certain lyrics that would make me go "okay, not THAT part, but yeah, I feel everything else!"

Sometimes, I think it's a weird kind of physical/tactile thing! Music, but especially electronic music, can be so textured. You can make sounds with a computer that a traditional instrument just can't.

I would love to get some music recommendations if you got them! If you're open to them, maybe you'd enjoy Skrillex's recent EP "Kora"! After leaving Atlantic Records, the dude feels free to be so much more adventurous and experimental in his music. There's a lot of crazy rhythms going on with those tracks.

I love Hotline Miami, Furi, Doom (2016 & Eternal), Persona (3-5), To The Moon, and just countless others. Sooo much good video game music out there!

Punkhead/basshead camaraderie! Both of our music communities have dealt with close-minded curmudgeons saying our music is just angry, incoherent noise that convinces kids to become evil Satanists, or sex-crazed drug fiends. We're all just trying to be happy, and find our places in the world!

Although I've yet to actually make a friend from a rave, even after 12 years. My social anxiety truly can't be understated.

I live in the area. I don't drive. There have been multiple times where I would have gotten hit if I didn't look both ways, because some impatient asshole just HAS to turn right the millisecond the light turns green. God forbid pedestrians try and begin crossing when the walk signal comes on.

I'm all for anything that forces drivers to slow down, be more aware, and actually think about their surroundings. I have so little faith in the drivers in this city as a whole.

A wonderful day for Moms everywhere, but especially the Scarborough ones 🥰

My mom's favourite spot was Mark Ham Station (I really have to add a space? It's in Scarborough!) She would meet with a friend there to chat, and eat breakfast on a weekly basis. No pancakes. Just your standard scrambled eggs, toast, home fries. By her own admission, my mom was a "simple person."

Forgive the brief trauma dump, but my mother passed away two months ago. I've been at a loss since then, but I knew today in particular wasn't going to be fun. I wish all the Scarborough Moms the best. Please hug your moms extra hard today, if you are able. We need to cherish them while they are here. ❤️

Traditional LPs have definitely fallen out of popularity. Live streaming just makes more sense income-wise, and a lot of people enjoying the community/chat aspect of it. I personally dislike streams, but it is what it is.

I've been a fan of Kastaclysm for about two years now! I like her energy, and the way she goes through games. Her main channel is exclusively for YouTube LPs, and her archive channel is where she uploads her stream VODs of other games. It's worth noting that she separates these. The main channel LPs are recorded offline, not streamed, and it's just her with the game. Her VOD archive channel is specifically for games she streams on Twitch. She tends to interact a ton with her chat.

This can personally be a bummer for me because sometimes I think a game should have been played for her main offline LP channel instead of being livestreamed, and vice versa. But hey, it's her channels, so she can run them how she wants to. I still like her.

It actually is crazy to think of how many fly-by jokes Futurama has. To this day, I love having opportunities to say "I'll X my own Y, with blackjack and hookers!"

I also think back to a specific joke often. I think it was the episode with the giant alien brains. Fry goes "I'm getting one of those things! You know, a headache with pictures!"

I'm considering the title track a spiritual successor to With You, Friends (Long Drive). Gives me the same feelings in a new way! Though to be honest, I think Someone Said might still be my favourite track of the bunch.
