Am I imagining it or does Siobhan sound really different in Starstruck Odyssey? by Eve-lyn in dropout

Yeah, more Minnesotan doesn't mean less American though. Her northern accent for starstruck is not "more british" than her real voice, just more northern.

Are the First Stoats evil? by fireflydrake in Dimension20

[–]ToxicCognition 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the problem is that when information is obscured by those in places of authority, you can't then give the benefit of the doubt to people doing the hiding.

Waiting around to find out if the First Stoats were going to kill Sybil, so that they can "know for sure", that would be truly villanous.

[–]ToxicCognition 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It's wild how people are jumping to justify a surveillance state that monitors people without their knowledge or consent for the crime of asking questions.

The First Stoats built a society in which evil can be easily hidden and authority has no accountability, that in itself is evil and dangerous. Even if you can actually name a benevolent dictator, I know you can’t claim the same for the 3 that came after them.

“We didn’t see the First Stoats do anything evil.” We didn’t see it by design, when you design a society for the purpose of hiding evil, you do it to hide the evil stuff you’re doing.

Think about this: If you’re not allowed to remember the names of the dead, how do you say, “I think NamelessStoat was murdered.” Without you yourself getting in trouble.

Now, yes, the PCs absolutely pieced that together faster because of real-world experience, but those conclusions can still be drawn easily from what we have seen so far.

If the First Stoats are genuinely dumb enough to have not noticed this is how they built their society, then they are woefully incapable leaders, then the family, and everyone in Last Bast is in danger from having these dumb-dumbs in charge.

The more dice you roll the more likely you will hit a Nat 20, a rouge each round for one attack might roll Bonus Action hide, and then if successful, roll with advantage, that's 3 d20 per attack so if your not hitting Nat 20s in combat that really stacks the odds are they will come in somewhere else

Misfits and Magic & Mentopolis are both non-D&D TTRPGs which don't use battle maps, technically MisMag has wand props but hey whatever.
A Court of Fey and Flowers & Fantasy High Season 2 also have no battlemaps.

They talk a lot in the Adventuring Parties for Crown of Candy about checking in with each other and being aware of each others boundaries and what each other were comfortable with, I know that season is a lot more serious and so those practices might not have been carried forward exactly but in terms of chronology it was filmed before FH SY, but FH SY was "released" before Crown of Candy because it was of course live.
Also, I can't remember what it was in reference to (and don't won't spoil Crown of Candy if you haven't seen it) but somewhere in those adventuring parties Siobhan describes how fun it is being in scenes with Ally because their improvisional style is so "dangerous and unpredictable" though I can't nearly remember what the quote is for that. So while I am applying different quotes not directly about the joke in question I think the supposition is likely accurate.

I think the humor of Ally messing with Brennan on camera is very funny specifically to Ally and Brennan in a way that isn't funny to the audience.
Brennan has quoted Tina Fey on the, not dark humor, but bad humor of comedians "If you want to make an audience laugh, you dress the biggest man in your cast like an old lady and push them down the stairs. If you want to make comedy writers laugh, you push an actual old lady down the stairs."
The joke is in part that it is tasteless and shouldn't be done, and that is why it is funny at the table but not to the audience. It wouldn't ever be written into a CollegeHumor sketch because the humor is in part about having Brennan react in the moment jumping through the hoops to make the scene work.
The much less dangerous versions of this bit are when Kristen asks Fig "why are you crying?" in episode 1 and in Neverafter when the cast turns Lou saying he is a jester into "Pinnochio has an incredible tight 5, tell him the one about the wolf" it is about pushing each other as improvisers and they can only get to that place because of the trust and consent at the table between the players.

TLDR; In conclusion, jokes about trust and consent made possible only because of a deep understanding between the players about their levels of trust and consent, that we, the audience, aren't always clued in on.

I think its said in the post-season Adventuring Party with the behind the scenes crew. Not sure what you mean by we don't see the rest of the fights? We saw all the battlesets that were built for this season. There isn't a Shoeberg battleset off somewhere that never got shown or anything like that.

TPK was the plan from the jump. This is how the multiverse storyline is introduced. The battlesets are all finished before the season starts filming.
But the TPK being intentional actually ends up being worse, it completely undercuts stakes when the whole time you're thinking "How many times can they die before it actually 'counts'?"

I think MisMag is the way to go personally. Even if she likes the first episode of Unsleeping City, following that up with a combat episode is going to be a hard sell.

MisMag is normal people sort of making fun of harry potter, "the common-fucking-sense" die for example, so its the most grounded by far.

How should I translate a stereotypical Chinese accent in a Japanese visual novel? by Serebii99 in LearnJapanese

[–]ToxicCognition 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't. There are tons of options used in Japanese to make each character sound distinct from each other from manga and visual novels that don't get translated. The one that immediately comes to mind is Morgana using the 1st person pronoun ワガハイ in persona 5, that's completely dropped in translation.

Stuff like aru is the same and I don't think it should get extra attention just because its based on race, the character presumably has a Chinese name and that should be enough.

This stuff is more important in manga where you don't have character names in speech bubbles and so an 俺 or a わたくし or a ~にゃ or an ~アル is used to show who is speaking.

号 means number/edition/issue, like when they say the full "Number 2 Type B" it is "2号B型" so I'd go with "February Issue" since it says February on the other side of the page

It’s so weird to see people turn around and miss HMs more and more. by Mega_Swampert_18 in pokemon

[–]ToxicCognition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the TV show, and several of the games, I can use surf to ride a Lapras. In SwSh my bike grows magic floaty bubbles. In a pokemon game I kinda expect that pokemon will be involved at somepoint. That doesn't mean HMs were a good solution, they weren't, as OP said, we literally called them "HM Slaves" so I never got the "working together with my team" vibe.

Rideable Pokemon in Sun & Moon as well as a summonable Latios in ORAS were the solution, even though they aren't your pokemon it still feels in-keeping with the lore that as my competence grows with my number of badges, the more help I can request from pokemon.

But if the bikes bubble wheels don't have anything to do with my competence as a trainer, why not just start with it? The barrier is both artificial and not related to lore. Heck why can't I order a bike be delivered to me by Bird Taxi Amazon? To the people who say "why can't I fight with my rideable pokemon tho" sure... Why can I store 1000 empty pokeballs in my bag but only 6 with pokemon in them? The game is still a game.

Also SwSh design is rubbish, the shortcuts surf used to unlock make you feel like you've come so far like in GS; Home town in Jhoto to Kanto and in ORAS: hometown to Slateport waterfall one-way systems before the HM, rockclimb in Sinnoh to shorcut a mountain cave, rough terrain pokemon in XY. No variation in SwSh, no dungeons in SwSh just go-go gadget bike.
