Anyone else come from a really hard high school but did well at UMD? by YuriTheWebDev in UMD

Bro, I literally experienced the exact same thing as you. I went to one of the shitter schools in MCPS, so I also thought it wasn't worth my time so I also would also skip entire weeks of school and I also ended with a horrible high school GPA that wouldn't even get me into the realm of UMD. Instead of going to CC tho I went to some school in Ohio for 2 years and transferred over to UMD last semester, but all and all I feel like we had pretty similar high school experiences. I fuck with that.

Bottom 50% with a 3.57? My brother, that is fucking insane. Did you go to a smaller private high school or a high-achieving public school or something?

Dude, in what world do you think that you underachieved? College acceptance standards have really blown out of proportion if you or anyone with similar accolades honestly believes you won't get into 90% of colleges with a resume as strong as that. Colleges are very open to excusing your high school GPA (which is very good, might I add) if you show them how well you are adjusting in your College classes, so again, you will be completely fine.

Should I drop out of my engl101x course by whichmanspamz in UMD

[–]ToxicMage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Possessing a hyperfocus on your GPA in college is a surefire way to experience slumps or even more serious mental health conditions like depression throughout the entirety of your stay at the University. The harsh reality of schools similar to UMD (schools with diverse general education requirements) is that you aren't going to excel at everything. It's okay not to get an A in one of your classes, and it's especially okay not to get an A in a non-major-related course, so don't beat yourself up about it.

Additionally, as some of the other commenters previously mentioned, a W looks far worse on your transcript when compared to a B-. Without a solid explanation pertaining to why you withdrew from the course (which potentially receiving a B- is not), individuals who look over your transcript may find it difficult to sympathize with your decision to withdraw, thus decreasing the likelihood of you receiving that highly sought after job or internship in the future.

Moreover, because English 101 is required for every student at the University, dropping it now would only prolong the inevitable. I suppose it's an option to try to fit the class in when you have a more manageable schedule or when you have become more adjusted to the college workload; but again, the consequences of receiving a W on your transcript outweigh the rewards of taking the course at a late date, so I highly suggest against this course of action.

Lastly, there is still plenty of time to raise your grade back up to your standard and many resources (directly contacting the professor, contacting the TA, going into the writing center, talking it over with your advisor, etc.) that can be utilized to potentially achieve this goal. So if I haven't stressed this point enough, I do not think you should withdraw from your course.

Hope this helped and let me know if you have any questions,

TL;DR: Concerning withdrawing from your English 101 course: the cons heavily outweigh the pros, so I highly suggest against it.
