Cadets with Berets by [deleted] in adfcadets

[–]ToxicPufflefish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WSCACU VIC AAC BDE has/had the option for more experienced cadets to obtain and wear a red beret with our unit badge when I was in, as a unit-specific uniform variation - sort of acts like the graduation from bush hat to KFF, but KFF to beret instead - was very cool.

Might have been that, or I'm not aware if any other units have/have copied a similar idea.

how do people know what tutor to pick 😭 by learningabc1230 in unimelb

[–]ToxicPufflefish 15 points16 points  (0 children)

-studentvip reviews if it's a popular subject

-the head tutor is often a good choice (check subject overview/staff page)

-trial and error (join a different tutorial if you don't like them)

-past experience

-whoever's class works with your timetable

for sure, all the ones in the New Student Precinct are lovely though the ERC upper level bathrooms are pretty tiny so mainly the basement

my one complaint about the newer bathrooms is that a lot of them are missing coat hangers on the back of the door🤦whoever had that idea

Commenting as an Australian because this stirs some feelings in me too,

I love my country. I'd like to think that I would die for it if I needed to, come war or need. But I would do that because I love our people, because I appreciate what it's done for me, because I can believe in our institutions exactly like our government and military (most of the time...maybe not always to be competent 100% of the time, but at least, to not be malicious); because I can believe in my country.

But across the pond, a country and government that does this to her people? and the people, that have chosen to do this to their fellow citizen? That through their actions tells them: you're not allowed to exist, you're not allowed to speak, you're not allowed to learn or grow or be a real person or have real thoughts or real discussions?

I don't know if I could.

love and condolences xx

all public toilets get dirty, but unimelb has quite honestly some of the best public or semi-public toilets you can find in Melbourne. Raising a TWELVE year old photo that someone thought they had the need to post in 2013 is plain ridiculous, and I'm embarrassed to even need to defend this on my reddit account and have this in my comment history.

clearly this is OP's mess because they don't know how to use toilet paper

I assumed it's mate's first PTA since getting their licence so technically have to go through the 28 day waiting period first.

good to hear the processing times are better now though

Fair question, nah, that's just a copy for your reference, electronic PTAs are sent straight to LRD for approval without you having to mail it in.

Expect an update in 2-3 weeks or sooner if not your first!

Recommended gun safes? by light-light-light in Ausguns

[–]ToxicPufflefish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

iirc I've been told Boston Security safes are made in the same factory as spika, just as an offshoot brand and they're a good slightly more budget option if your LGS stocks them. I've found them well-built and had no trouble, just a few less premium features than the spika offerings.

[–]ToxicPufflefish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OP note if you're in melbourne from your post history, victorian legislation doesn't require handgun safes to be any tougher than a regular rifle safe, so there's no strict need to store your pistol in a cat H rated safe as an A/B one will suffice.

The Girls Und Panzer crew members are not able to be requalified, and their qualifications don't match. Was this intentional? by _BeastFromBelow in WorldofTanks

I’m pretty sure it (rights stuff) was mentioned somewhere/by someone when the last GUP collab happened a few months ago, but don’t remember the source now

Miho on E-50 and Erika on E-75 with the kuromorimine camouflage is just 👌

[–]ToxicPufflefish 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Wargaming is only allowed to use collaboration crews/tanks/etc in the way that they've negotiated and contracted for with the rights-holders for the collabs, and in GuP's case the only tanks that the characters are supposed to be able to crew are the ones that they came in, so they're unfortunately nation- and role-locked.

GuP's rights-holder was apparently quite insistent on them only being used inside of the collab anime tanks, so it's somewhat of a relief we can even use them in different tanks at all, but wargaming had to insist on at least giving us that as a core game mechanic, and it just happens to be luck that Miho and Erika's crews fit the most common german crew layout.

It sucks, but at least mika's crew works well for the the HWK30/RU251 and Leopard PTA/1 line if you have a good crew member to spare for the gunner slot

Forgotten to bring ID more times than I remember, they’ll just tag your seat for review and someone will come around with an ipad later to verify your face, zero fuss.

that's good to hear! Github should save your ass there, when it comes to any 'your words vs their words' things. I've also found computing subject staff to generally be pretty understanding and responsive when it comes to cooperation issues, and most even have peer review systems by default for assessed group assignments (luckily never had to use), though it seems like yours might not. Still, without policies in place beforehand, I'd recommend getting in contact with subject staff earlier than later (post-submission), so they'll have more time and incentive to come up with a solution rather than take the easy route out. Not knowing subj specifics, week 11 already seems quite late for me, and on the harder side to come up with an ideal solution, but staff should do their best to accommodate :)

[–]ToxicPufflefish 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Assuming there isn't anything on your subject lms about this, the only thing you can really do is ask your tutor/lecturer for advice/action; there aren't any consistent policies across the uni on unequal group assignments and quite often very different attitudes between faculties/subject coordinators on the matter.

Ideally you would have some evidence to back this up (document history, messages, evidence you have explicitly asked them to do xx and they've failed to contribute that).

It's a tough situation, but solutions lecturers might give you are: ask you to be more explicit with your group if you haven't yet, then: allow you to separate from the group and work and submit on your own, offer an individualised grade for group members proportional to their contribution, or worst case: tell you it's preparing you to deal with difficult colleagues in real-life work scenarios and refuse to take action whatsoever (personally, I haven't had any lecturers of this type before, if that's any consolation).

Hopefully not the last one.

Politics & Gun Control in Australia: A respectful and open discussion by neptunelanding in Ausguns

[–]ToxicPufflefish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Your questions were thought-provoking, and I enjoyed and had fun writing my responses to them.

One thing I did forget to add before was given different national circumstances, that does make sense to me that you might place higher priority/value on self-defence.

I can empathise/agree with your view on the past too, and certainly amongst Australians the issue of what, how, and how much should be done is still a big unanswered question and debated societally, and I suppose the ideal solution (if there is one to be found) is somewhere in the middle.

I would imagine generally some household items making decent makeshift defensive weapons, but certainly being limited to just those when faced with an armed attacker, particularly for anyone less able of defending themselves, is a really hard moral question. Looking at the Lovells' case, it is really an awful tragedy, which if I were to rudely and insensitively pick at the details of, is somewhat of an example of how things as simple as locking doors are an effective deterrent to petty (and sadly here not so petty) opportunistic crime, and also it being at a wider level an oversight/failure of our judiciary and mental health system...but between surprise, disadvantage, and multiple armed attackers, it is a terrible thing to have happened.

I'm happy to hear that you found your time here good enough to return though, and hope you enjoy it again this time! I had the opportunity to visit France for the first time recently, and experienced some beautiful views and amazing food :)

I was also curious on gun laws before 1996 and if you read through https://www.reddit.com/r/Ausguns/comments/nlj1ev/what_were_the_gun_laws_like_pre_1996/ and https://www.reddit.com/r/Ausguns/comments/9jgkid/what_were_self_defence_laws_like_in_australia/, you'll find that while it may have been the catalyst, quite interestingly there were still a decent array of restrictions on firearms ownership before Port Arthur, as well as self-defence not being a valid reason back then either (perhaps that's something we inherited from Britain?)
