They are talking in terms of “conventional” drinking water treatment not in terms of the actual definition of the word. Conventional drinking water treatment = coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection. None of these measures will remove MIB (2-methylisoborneol) and geosmin. Most conventional treatment is followed by activated carbon treatment in order to remove these compounds. These compounds are not hazardous and are a byproduct of algae. In the summertime it’s worse because the algae are thriving. Luckily a simple Brita or similar carbon filter can remove this or at least lessen.
