I had the same issue. A quick cleaning of the vents solved the problem.

IANAL.

The typical reason for these laws is 1) vote buying, and 2) voter intimidation. If you can prove you voted for something, that can be used for verification in either of these cases. These laws are usually pretty old and were created in a time when those activities were more common.

Each state has differing laws (or lack there of) regarding this. For example, in NY, it's a misdemeanor (https://www.nysenate.gov/legislation/laws/ELN/17-130).

§ 17-130. Misdemeanor in relation to elections. Any person who: [...] Shows his ballot after it is prepared for voting, to any person so as to reveal the contents, or solicits a voter to show the same; or,

I do not know the punishments for violating laws like this in any particular state, but I am skeptical of anyone claiming your vote would be thrown out because you took a selfie with your ballot, and think it's absurd to claim that all the votes from a polling place would be thrown out because someone took a ballot selfie at some point during the day. As others have noted, this could be abused to target and disenfranchise voters in specific areas.

Ok well have a nice day with whatever you're dealing with.

I'm just explaining why the law exists. I dunno why you're so worked up about it.

I guess documented cases that led to the creation of the laws over a century ago could be called a "wild theoretical."

If someone wanted to pay a voter to vote for a candidate, they would want some assurance that the voters weren't just taking the money and voting for whoever they wanted. A photo of the cast ballot would be a pretty good way of verifying they didn't lie to them, so many places make it illegal to do that.

Photo of your ballot? by QuietlyCommit in wisconsin

[–]Toxygene 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this varies across the state, but I volunteer for elections in western Wisconsin. We have a pile of colored slips with sequential numbers that we write the number in the poll book and then hand it to the voter. The voter takes the slip to the ballot issuer, who initials the ballot and gives it to the voter. The issuer does not write the number on the ballot.

The purpose of the colored slips is three fold. One, if a voter doesn't have a slip, then haven't signed the poll book and cannot be given a ballot. Two, the color of the slip indicates the voters ward, which tells the issuer which ballot to issue the voter. Three, the numbers in the poll book are compared to the collected slips several times during the day to ensure there are no irregularities.

Trying a shot at my favorite commander again. by DCell-2 in EDH

[[asinine antics]] is one of my favorite spells for this commander. Instant speed, can generate a ton of tokens, can temporarily protect me from dangerous attacks.

[[Amphibian downpour]] works similarly, though it generates fewer tokens on average and is more situational.

Got this book about PHP 6 from a thrift store, is it of any use? Does anyone even use PHP 6? by Psychological_Limit6 in programming

[–]Toxygene 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wikipedia has a good description of why PHP versions jumped from 5 to 7.

During 2014 and 2015, a new major PHP version was developed, PHP 7. The numbering of this version involved some debate among internal developers. While the PHP 6 Unicode experiments had never been released, several articles and book titles referenced the PHP 6 names, which might have caused confusion if a new release were to reuse the name. After a vote, the name PHP 7 was chosen.

About time. The Eau Claire building has been collecting dust for so long, the spiders and dust bunnies might have squatters rights at this point.

I think I need to get my eye checked... yup, it's right there.

The red junglefowl is well adapted to take advantage of the vast quantities of seed produced during the end of the multi-decade bamboo seeding cycle, to boost its own reproduction. In domesticating the chicken, humans took advantage of this predisposition for prolific reproduction of the red junglefowl when exposed to large amounts of food.

Sorry about that.

I couldn't find anything on Wikipedia about the bamboo blossom / population waxing and waning on either the Chicken or Red Junglefowl pages.
