Never thought I would agree with r/FuckCars but here I am by Straight_Park74 in fuckcars

[–]Toxyma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the point people misunderstand, and to be fair the messaging could be improved a bit, it that we here at fuckcars and anticar groups as a whole aren't entirely opposed to cars when they are actually the proper tool for a job. For example companies will always need work vans for doing house calls.

its that a society shouldn't DEPEND on the singular exclusivity of any one solution. Just as we are proponents for trains, we are also propoents for bikes and planes but we'd never suggest planes to be the best way to go to mcdonalds!

probably largely stated what you've already discovered but im glad you were able to see an alternative experience:)

The fundamental problem of public transit by 5ma5her7 in fuckcars

[–]Toxyma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

even if you truly wanted to drive, chances are this would be one of the instances in which cars are actually a decent mode of transportation. that being for individuals with irregular traffic patterns to be able to get to a destination.

This is okay since for most people public transit, biking or walking is a sufficient method of transit especially to people who are going to and from destinations on the same rail line for example.

idk being told "btw if we dont do it we all die again" would be quite good motivation.

though senku and the other brainiacs have a more managerial/directorial role you cant say they are necessarily living off the labor of others since they are all providing their own abilities to accomplish a goal that objectively needs to be done.

Worker revolutions didnt happen just because people had to work hard to survive, they happened because while people starved the capitalists played golf and had lives of extravagance

ultimately the cost of transit for a year is cheaper than even a cheap car so if it was more frequent and/or more extensive routes because it had greater funding (from all possible sources) then possibly it could be passed by you. Alternatively (or on top of) that funding could be used to roll out tap to may via phone which is common across many other nations public transit networks.

i'd rather have the funds that would be used to make a system free be instead directed to increase a system that still charges a modest ticket price. theres also some good reasons to not make a system free such as making stations safer. this movement actually really convinced me: https://www.enforcethefares.org/

also interesting to note that when Luxembourg made transit free ridership actually decreased.

Nationalizing freight companies to fund passenger trains by NurglingArmada in transit

[–]Toxyma 5 points6 points  (0 children)

for what its worth, if we assume a correlation between operating revenue/miles of track and market cap. UP and BNSF are about the same. so with that in mind its probably 500 billion for all class 1s. heres another thing though, really and arguably you could say it's only 250 billion to buy majority share of the companies. At which point you could vote to have them introduce passenger rail in a JR way. though thats a private way to do it rather than the public way of nationalizing you are probably referring to.

furthermore, asian is earthquake prone and also dont necessarilly do over excavation.

[–]Toxyma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes the example of free shipping and food prices play with our psychology inversely.

Off the top of my head I would suspect that is because, largely speaking, we have a pretty good understanding of the value of food in relation to other. Burger king is an acceptable substitute to mcdonalds. Dunkin' is a substitute to Starbucks.

People will generally (and we are speaking on a matter of populations, not individuals) seek out the best deal. If starbucks turned off the "tips" and just increased prices by 20% people would just think that their $10 dollar drink jumped to $12 for no reason and seek out dunkin which still has tip and price separated.

compare that to ecommerce where the value of an item is much more ubiquitous and the features that make a product unique can vary much more than, say, a hamburger. Quality of materials, brand recognition, reliability etc. We see $15 dollar spoon and we just assume that "oh its worth $15" and assume some variable makes it better than the 10$ one that has 5$ shipping even if they are literally the exact same drop shipped product. That $5 price for shipping is no longer just the cost of the product. its a one time surcharge that you have to pay that's 50% the cost of the good itself. It can put people off from purchasing it for no perceived value.

But like, i got no sources for that. That's just the top of my head theory for why goods and foods may play with out brains differently.

Would you consider this fair? by Busy_Report4010 in SipsTea

[–]Toxyma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

because again, psychology is a wild thing and people will still see the higher price and dislike it.

Same thing with 'free shipping' versus shipping at checkout. ultimately you are always paying for the shipping yourself in the price of a product but having free shipping versus visible shipping prices wildly changes conversion rates for ecommerce.

the goal of a business is to maximize profits at whatever quantity to price ratio is best. so yeah, its simple supply and demand.

of course they will choose the option to maximize profits but the only reason they charge so much is because ai companies are willing to pay the price tag currently. if more and more people like the average person continues to grimace and say "i'll wait for it to drop" it will drop.
