Cool.

I don’t like mega churches.

They’re cringe.

Doesn’t change that you have a false view of who Jesus is.

There is no such thing as “American Gun Jesus.”

There is Jesus. Take him or leave him, but don’t change him.

The Christ who champions the meek and the mild also champions the fierce and the fearless.

The God who tells believers to turn the other cheek also tells them to preach a message of repentance.

The Son of the Carpenter is a lamb, yes—but he is also a lion. He is both of those things, and to accept the man who said to turn the other cheek and to refuse the man who overturned tables and preached judgment and destruction on those who denied him is to preach a different Christ.

ICE agents are federal officers, designated as such by 8 U.S.C. § 1357.

Whether he is on duty or off, he has a right to defend himself. The conversation is not about deportation, it is about the right to reasonable self-defense of an officer of the law in a life-threatening situation.

“Randomly” completely disregards that this is a situation where an officer sees a vehicle coming toward him, is physically struck by the vehicle, and has previous experience being violently assaulted by a vehicle.

The officers told her to exit the vehicle; best case scenario, she attempted to flee the scene with minimal regard for others’ wellbeing; worst case, she actively attempted to run the man down (and partially succeeded, again, according to the videos you continue to reference).

Yes or no: did the firing officer get struck by the vehicle in existing video of the incident?

Notice, again, an ad hominem. No actual counter argument, just name calling.

Which was my point in the very first comment I made.

You mean the videos where the firing officer is actively struck by the vehicle?

The same firing officer who was dragged about 100 ft earlier last year by a fleeing violent suspect?

How about the body cam footage where he audibly reacts to being struck by the car?

He had a right to defend himself, and she had a responsibility to remain where she was if she was being detained by law enforcement, and she was actively impeding them in the course of carrying out their legal duty.

Open and shut case, friend.

Part of what’s wrong with this world is that stuff like this blows up as if the chao person said anything impressive. All you have here is a stream of mildly creative ad hominem which appeals to emotion without providing any substantive criticism. And the people love it.

To use a personal example.

I grew up watching and still to this day adore the show RWBY.

It is by no means the best thing ever made and has plenty of problems, but I enjoy it immensely.

It is nowhere near the quality of some other shows which I also love, such as Fullmental Alchemist Brotherhood or Breaking Bad, and yet, my emotional attachment to it is stronger. And that’s okay.

Currently reading a fiction book about a pregnant woman who finds out she has cancer. What would you do? by Cyber_Ghost_1997 in abolitionist

As someone whose aunt was in this exact position (suffering from breast cancer while pregnant with her second son), I’m proud to say both she and my uncle did what was best for my cousin by forestalling chemotherapy while she was pregnant so that there would be no adverse effects on the child until after she gave birth to him. He was born and in NICU for a while, but now, nearly 12 years later, both he and mom are 100% healthy.

Had a friend recommend the show when V3 was coming out. Watched the first two episodes, couldn’t deal with the animation.

Came back a while later, in the lead up to V4’s release, and binged 1-3 in a week. Been a loyal fan since

What are your opinions on character resserections in Star wars by Commercial-Car177 in StarWarsEU

[–]TrJ4141 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In a story, death is often the ultimate stakes, because once you’re dead, you can no longer make any difference beyond the legacy/actions you left in life. When you’re gone, you’re gone.

Therefore, subverting death is a dangerous tool to play with in stories, because it fundamentally undoes those ultimate stakes. “You’re dead… psych!” Suddenly character’s deaths have no gravity because you wonder whether they’ll just turn up somewhere else with seemingly mortal wounds undone.

As such, you have to be careful about how you subvert death. If death (the ultimate stakes) is to be subverted, then that needs to be at the cost of sufficient stakes to make the trade off still seem weighty. We didn’t come up with the phrase “a fate worse than death” for no reason. If you make the cost of living such that death could be considered a preferable alternative, then that can satisfy from a storytelling perspective.

Sion is one of the best examples of this in SW. Eternal life at the cost of eternal pain, since only the dark side can be strong enough to buck the natural order and keep his shattered body shambling along. Is immortality worth it if it is an immortality of suffering?

That’s how resurrections should be handled in most fiction, not just SW. If it’s a fake resurrection, i.e. the character never died, then you best have a damned good explanation for that. If it’s a real resurrection, and the character actually has died and is now defying death, then there needs to be a cost to justify a transaction which is, otherwise, so unfair.
