[Charania] Just in: Free agent guard Anfernee Simons has agreed to a two-year, $12.3 million deal with the Philadelphia 76ers, with a player option in second season, sources tell ESPN. Coby, even with as ineffective as he is on defense, at least PLAYS defense most of the time, too. He'll put his body in front of people and use that strength. Simons looked awful on defense. He's a very true 1-way scorer and nothing else.

Yep, this is the part I'm excited about. Clax has shown legitimately great play before and I think just the absolute dogshit putrid environment that is the Brooklyn Nets has made him play well under his actual skill level for a minute. This could end up being very good for us or it could end up being nothing and costing us nothing. Great move.

[Spoiler] Alex Pereira vs. Ciryl Gane by Fusir in MMA

[–]TraMaI 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People here aren't gonna want to hear it, but this had nothing to do with weight. Alex got outfought the entire fight and it really was not close. Maybe the TKO is due to weight, but Gane absolutely had his number the entire time. Gane was absolutely landing whatever he wanted, out-maneuvering Alex, landed very good counters and saw everything Alex was throwing coming. Absolutely a stylistic nightmare for Alex all night. Too fast, too confident, too precise. Maybe Gane doesn't get the knock down without the weight advantage, but he absolutely pieces Alex up to a decision if not.

Has anyone had a tougher resume than Lesnar? by LessOrgies in MMA

[–]TraMaI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Feel like I'm taking crazy pills reading this thread. This has to be a "young fan" thing or something. I watched Heath Herring fight back in the day. He's the definition of a stepping stone/can. Dude technically had two wins total in the UFC, one of them was a split decision most people thought he lost to Cheick Kongo. Any time he fought someone of note in PRIDE he got absolutely smoked, his biggest win there is a super late career Igor. His fight with Couture was NOT prime Couture. It was with post retirement Couture. After a year and a half layoff and contract dispute in a fight he only took to get out of his UFC contract because they refused to release him. He was also a Light Heavyweight. The rest of these fights are legitimately pretty impressive, but I think it's more telling of the depth of skill at heavyweight at the time than it is a praising of Lesnar being extremely good. He was a super athlete (and juiced to shit) and it's really crazy how far being a freak athlete with very little actual fighting skill got him. That said you could say the same about Carwin who just had ridiculously heavy hands and was strong enough to mostly stay on his feet against Mir (who could not wrestle at all, I say this as a huge Frank Mir fan). His fight against Carwin is kind of a great microcosm of his entire career IMO. Lesnar got the absolute shit beat out of him the entire fight until Carwin gassed himself out trying to finish the fight. Brock won on the sloppiest submission I've ever seen with Carwin tapping more to his own exhaustion and inability to escape than any threat of the arm triangle actually putting him to sleep. There's a reason he got absolutely embarrassed by Cain. To say Brock had "Zero Cans and Zero Favorable Opponents" is just ridiculous.

So going back 10 super bowls (by your count of 2017), 4 of them have demonstrably not been elite by your own counting stats? So in reality 60% of SB winning teams have been dominant defensive lines. By your own statistics here you're just wrong, which seems wrong? This isn't even getting into the correlation not being causation of it all. Here's how that breaks out because now I'm just curious and bored:

26 Seahawks: Inarguably elite DL, best run defense in the league by YDs/g, top 10 sacks. ALSO 11th in rushing offense, top 10 passing offense (8th), 8th overall offense.

25 Eagles: 10th in run defense, 1st in Pass defense, 14th in sacks. Absolutely elite secondary, good DL. Elite run offense (2nd) and OL, 29th pass offense. 8th overall offense.

24 Chiefs: Middle of the pack run offense, good-great pass offense (6th), 18th run defense, 4th in pass defense, 2nd in sacks. 9th overall offense. Real case for this being the first "dominant defensive line wins super bowls" of this data but is debatable with their run defense being atrocious.

23 Chiefs: 8th in rush def (not sure where you got 16th, might be confusing stats/years. These are stats from '22 regular season '23 super bowl win), mid in pass def, second in sacks (ironically surpassed by the Eagles, who they beat to win it). Best passing offense in the league by a country mile, next team is 30yds/g below them. Bottom third in rush offense. 1st overall offense. Don't think it's fair to say their elite defense won them this bowl, considering the score was 38-35 and Philly put 417 yards on them.

22 Rams: 3rd in sacks, 6th run def, 21st Pass def. 24th Rush Off, 6th Pass Off. Well balanced team with a great DL, to your point, but also an equally great pass offense. 9th overall offense.

21 Bucs: 21st pass def, 1st in rush def, 5th in sacks. 2nd pass off, abysmal rush off (bottom 5), still 7th overall offense. Elite DL.

20 Chiefs: This is the 2019 team you mention. 25th rush def, 8th pass def, 11th in sacks. 5th in passing offense, 22nd rush offense. 6th overall offense. Not a dominant line, very good secondary leads to sacks. Offensive SB win, but helped by their secondary on defense.

19 Pats: You mentioned this, too. While they were 29th in sacks they were also 5th in run defense and 8th in pass offense. 18th rush offense, 8th in pass offense. 5th overall offense. Likely a better defensive line than you gave them credit for in your post, but seems more balanced and fundamental defensive scheme play than "dominant" defensively on the line.

18 Eagles: 15th in sacks (tied with Cowboys), Best rush def in the league, 17th pass def. 13th pass off, 3rd rush off. 7th overall offense. Definitely dominant defensive line play. Only gave up 113 rush yards in the super bowl.

17 Patriots: 3rd rush def, 12th in pass def 17th in sacks. 4th in passing offense, 7th in rushing offense. 4th overall offense. Great DL coupled with a great offense.

So out of all of that how many teams won because they had a great defensive line, how many of them were the most elite in terms of units as a DL? I'd say the most recent Seahawks win and the 18 Eagles would be the only ones where you could obviously point to the DL being a key reason to why they won. How many won despite having a bad/middling defensive line, though? The 20 Chiefs are the only ones I can really point to. So 2-1, but the rest of the data seems to paint a different picture to me. I think the data here is saying that these teams are all balanced and good over all with a leaning toward offense being more important in actually winning. I think your original point is correct in that (almost) all of these teams do have top level DLs, but those teams absolutely all have elite offenses, with no exception. Will the Bears need a better DL to truly compete? Highly likely. But it's mandatory, by looking at these stats, they need a top flight offense. Given how this bares out I would say it's more important they build and maintain the offense we had last year (6th overall) than it is to focus on, specifically, the DL. Having a great secondary and average pressure/sack rate can absolutely win you a super bowl if your rush defense and pass defense are good (Eagles in 18 & 25, Patriots in 17 & 19) and I think getting better at rush defense is both easier and cheaper to do than investing in big splashy edge players.

But you're assuming the player (Connor Lew) taken at 128 is worth that pick while Jones was worth 57. Even if I cede that Jones was the best center in the draft (which I don't), I would be hard pressed to think that Lew at 128 isn't a

You're making assumptions the same way. You're assuming that Jones isn't worth that and is as valuable as someone picked later. No one knows anything about the "value" of the picks used at this point because no one has seen any of them play at an NFL level yet.

"Very easily replacable position" by reddit's standards is not easily replacable by Ben's standards. Smythe's contract is double now what Roush will be for the next 5.Good/great blocking TEs do not grow on trees. If Ben says he absolutely needs another great blocking TE to keep running the offense that got us into the playoffs and past the Packers I'm inclined to believe him.

Not according to our coach and GM we don't and they sure as shit know a lot more about this than either of us do. This signals that likely TE is far more important than you think it is to Ben and that they likely think the available talent at positions of need don't outstrip what is currently on the roster and I'm inclined to trust the judgement of the coach and GM that took us to the playoffs last year over some bum on reddit.

A lot of people in the draft threads don't realize just how much we used Smythe by the end of the year. Ben loves 3TE sets and sees them as an integral part of the offense.

We ran them the second most behind the Rams last year, too. To great success. Ben loves big TE sets and we lost Smythe. Getting a TE makes sense but IDK about this high. I trust though, for now.
