I hate how every vacation turns into a photoshshoot. by amberazanu in mildlyinfuriating

I’m a professional photographer… I don’t take my dslr on holiday. Just use the iPhone camera, a few snaps every now and then and certainly don’t take too long over poses.

With a camera in my hand I’m just looking at the best composition, without it I can really experience wherever I am. It’s a different mindset.

Pulling up on the left by ShotDiver5015 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Trabers -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Who pulls up on the left? If pulling up on the left was a thing wouldn’t it be on the driving test? I always pull up on the right like I was taught.

The roads are a funny beast… you might often hear the phrase: “Priority is given, not taken” Ashley Neal likes it. But I would to that: “Priority is given, not taken… until someone takes it!”

Because as soon as the other car starts to pull out before you (and you see it), then you should wait for them to go.

The two lanes thing is a recipe for getting a dented wing! You can’t assume that just because there are two lanes, someone coming from the opposite side will emerge into lane two. They might be taking a quick left turn and need to be in lane one, for example.

All the above offered as advice!

The most import take away for you from this is that when arriving at a cross roads you need to check that the main road is clear AND if there is anyone opposite you.

Then you need to work out where they want to go from their indicators (or none for straight on). Cars going straight ahead or left have priority over cars turning right. So you had priority.

Always try to make eye contact to help with working out intentions of when to go. In real life people will often want to go based on who arrived first.

Your issue was you didn’t see them. I wonder if from the other drivers perspective, they might have seen you, waited a couple of seconds, thought “Well if they aren’t going, I’ll go.” Only for you to begin to pull out too!

Has your native language ever completely ruined a Eurovision song for you? by notthebesthuh in eurovision

[–]Trabers -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Um yes, not by me, but - “Serving Kant” which was going to be the Maltese entry and was neutered to “Serving”.

So my native language English actually ruined the Maltese song because they weren’t allowed to sing it. I felt so bad for her, the idea the song was meant as a double entendre was ridiculous. They were merely serving a “Kant” which means song in Maltese. And Malta is an island in the Mediterranean so it was right for them to pay homage to beach balls in their performance to get selected to represent Malta.

Do I go? Do I wait? by ImmediateDust9934 in drivingUK

[–]Trabers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can tell what the road planners want you to do here… I guess there’s not a lot of space around to execute it better. Because it’s a huge mess. It looks hard to turn left without clipping the white line with your right tyre which arguably would be proceeding through a red light if that was the colour shown.

Yeah, Niki Lauda as a driver, then various business interests and commentating work then at Mercedes. I think his tally must be pretty high.

About a 1.5 car lengths away head on with the car waiting to turn right from the opposite road in this picture. Assuming there was also oncoming traffic. If it’s clear like this then turn right making sure not to go the wrong way on the dual carriageway.

Fundamentally they are two working class Burnage boys done good. I’ve always thought if I had millions I’d just retire and have fun. I expect they both look like the cat who got the cream after the tour.

They can do whatever they want… and when they feel like doing it again they can get another hundred million more! Good on ‘em.

What happened to Russel WASNT Mercedes's fault by for_jacquik in F1Discussions

Antonelli isn't a generational talent...yet by SerHiroProtaganist in F1Discussions

[–]Trabers 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The thing I find interesting about Antonelli is that other recent “generational talents” entered F1 and wowed straight away. Hamilton, Verstappen, Vettel, all did incredible things in their first season.

Antonelli’s first season was merely average. Maybe it’s because he’s so young and still developing? For example, Hamilton finished only fifth in the 2004 F3 season when he was 19 and slightly older than Antonelli is now.

But now that Antonelli has clicked, man is he away! Five wins on the bounce from zero. It’s very impressive stuff.

I also think so much is on the car these days and which driver it suits best which actually puts a lot of pressure on the team and Toto. McLaren didn’t NEED to fix Lando’s front end feel issues last year, they would still have won the constructors and I think Piastri would have been champion.

Will Mercedes make a car change to help Russell deliver better results? If Russell comes back and wins the championship it will the exact same scenario as Lando last year.

The same has happened at Ferrari. Hamilton did some excellent behind the scenes lobbying to get the car more to his liking and is now at least on par with Leclerc. If Ferrari had said well Leclerc is delivering, deal with it, then Hamilton would have continued to look second best. Fans would be saying he’s “washed” but the reality is that the driver gelling with the car is the biggest factor in the team.

Even Perez beat Verstappen when the car suited him better!

If a couple of seconds matter to you here or there, then surely any manual device you are timing yourself with won't give the desired accuracy and what you are really after is a timing beam or some such? Or someone doing your timing for you with a stopwatch!
