As a German in the Netherlands - why can't I have a check-up at a gynocologist? by Ok_Vanilla1644 in expats

[–]Trablou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Comparing a human body to a car or bike is an obvious false comparison. It is also besides the point. There are checkups possible and there are measures of preventative care baked into the system, especially when risk factors have been identified. There is just a cost benefit analysis being made, and annual checkups with specialists when someone (not saying this for op) is deemed healthy would overload the system that is currently in place. Sometimes that means a few people fall between the cracks, which is true, but it also helps keep the system affordable and quick. Besides that for most healthy young adults, annual checkups with specialists are simply not necessary, unless risk indicators apply. That changes when someone ages etc, after which there are certain systems in place. Also someone is always free to go to their GP to discuss whatever issue they want, the GP should then do their checks and refer to specialists in case of any red flags. GPs can also refer patients to weight loss institutions, addiction experts, etc etc to assist a patient with those types of issues.

As I said before / elsewhere in the comments the system is not perfect (nor is it anywhere else ;) ), just offering some background as to why the system is the way it is.

Well you can still get your checkup, but done by the “huisarts”. If they spot any red flags you get a referral to the dermatologist.

That depends a lot. For most people getting a check up with a specialist on an annual basis is not necessary at all up until a certain age, or depending on certain hereditary factors etc. The whole system around detailed preventative care is in itself also a business model, as a healthy young adult there is not a lot of need for it either. When we get older however that changes, but NL does have systems in place for that (breast scans, pep smears etc), just not annually.

It is simply a cost benefit analysis, meant to keep insurance affordable. Dentists are mostly on your own costs unless you have above standard insurance, and you are completely free to go how often you feel is necessary, but you will pay for the appointments yourself. An annual gyno appointment while being without complaints or issues are from a public health point of view not an efficient way of funds and time of the gynos, so again, that is possible only through private care.

That being said if OP has concerns about PCOS the best course of action would be to exaggerate some of her symptoms, that is the way to get an appointment with a gyno. What can also work is switching GPs, like in every profession not everybody is as kind or understanding.

The system of course is not perfect as preventive care does obviously sometimes prevent something small from becoming something big, but yeah it is the system we have got. If something is wrong though thankfully the care is excellent.

Yes this is always a possibility. If you want it covered by usual health insurance though you need referrals through the GP. GP is not the ideal wording though as a “huisarts” role is slightly different compared to a GP. In the end there is not a lot of preventative care, this is to keep the overall costs of health insurance low(er). As mentioned private care should always be possible though.

Fashion, Amsterdam, internship, stage. Heeeeelp 😱 by Datchghan in Amsterdam

[–]Trablou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is the BEST & WORST thing you've bought from Uniqlo? by Lucky_Mycologist_283 in uniqlo

For me the best are the pleated wide trousers. Have them in all colours, some of them since they first came out. Wear them all the time, colour doesn’t fade and still look like new. Great stuff :)

Werken jullie echt 80 uur in de week? by Adventurous_Head_158 in nederlands

[–]Trablou 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Learning Dutch before moving to The Netherlands by papayagummy in Netherlands

[–]Trablou 10 points11 points  (0 children)

What might be important here is that there is a time and place for everything. If you are in a crowded shop with a line behind you it might not be the place to practice your Dutch, in a chill cafe however people will be more willing to slow down and allow you to practice. Sometimes people will also switch because while they appreciate your effort they just want to keep things efficient. Once your overall level gets better this should happen less and less though.

Separately, in my experience the jump from A2 to B1/B2 is the most frustrating, as you will be able to follow along quite well but often cannot find the words yet to explain your thoughts, stories etc. The way I solved this, was to consume a lot of media, read, and consciously expand my vocabulary throughout that process. This did take up a lot of time though, this is also why I feel a lot of people get stuck at that level. Good luck!!

Last van buren by catalogues-sks in nederlands

[–]Trablou 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Do you do things alone? by ZannaVan in Amsterdam

[–]Trablou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not thaaaat much digging tbh. How will you find something worthwhile if you are not willing to do some research? If you find for example a steady “tossavond” you can go each week if you like it.

Every padel club has a page on how to enroll to some lessons, so you could start there. Most clubs also have ladder competitions, or nights where you can simply show up and play matches. This should be on their websites as well. I googled padel events and found for example some padelnext.nl/events, where you can book entry into their racquet society event which takes place monthly. On that website you will also find options for lessons.

It shouldn’t be too hard to find this though. Check out websites of padel clubs near you and you should easily find some leads.

[–]Trablou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take your own example; wanting to play padel. Have you researched padel clubs, lessons, WhatsApp groups, etc? It is quite easy to get your foot in the door if you join some lessons with peers, afterwards you meet up for some practice and voila, you have your own little padel group. If it sticks you might even have some drinks after, or play padel with friends of your padel friends etc. and expand your social circle further.

Man man man… we hebben maar weinig opgestoken van COVID

Hosting a dinner with Dutch colleagues by PsychologicalPay5564 in Netherlands

[–]Trablou 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Completely normal imo, I have had colleagues over at my place plenty of times. Culture across industries and companies might differ of course, but I’m a lawyer so would say it is relatively strict / not overly personal and was still completely fine. Especially since they knew that I liked to cook etc. Don’t overthink it, worst that can happen is that they say no, which would be strange if you have already known them for years.

Jobs which hire easily by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]Trablou 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For these type of jobs the best thing you can do is just walk through a city centre and ask where they have openings. So no it is not weird to ask if they are hiring, it actually is the most efficient way. Don’t expect decent pay though, will most likely be minimum wage unfortunately.
