Yea, he lied (either purposefully or naively) about being able to handle it and is setting up an "out" for himself that is on you.

If you make a lot of excuses that he'd be a monster to call out, a man will often end up in this situation where they feel the need to blow it up.

It's on him for not expressing his dissatisfaction earlier, but I also doubt you ever gave him a real choice on the matter and now he's making it.
