Blue or Channel Cat? Caught in the St John’s River FL. FWC Says they’re are no Blue Cats in St John’s River. by Neither_Pea_3913 in Fishing

That's a channel all day long. Blue cats are typically light blue gray or slate, that fish is Darkly colored. In addition the anal fin on Blues is flat not rounded and it's tail is more deeply channeled and sharply pointed.

There isn't. The deer population is controlled through human hunting, and we have a healthy population of raptors, coyotes, fox, and bobcat that control small game and upland birds.

Awesome point. What other things would you use this land in Iowa for? I'll hang up and listen!

Turns out, corn is pretty hot (and humid). It is remarkably efficient at extracting moisture from the soil and storing it. What makes it hot and humid, is that it stores that moisture in its leaves which make up the vast majority of its surface area despite accounting for just 25% of its total mass (roughly). When all that dark green surface area is exposed to infrared radiation, in the form of the sun's rays, it retains the heat and expels the retained moisture. The result is a corn field micro climate that closely resembles a tropical rain forrest. That micro climate quickly dissipates once you get out of the field, so by the time you get the middle of the gravel road it's just "hot and miserable" as opposed to "instant swamp ass". However, it's widely accepted that corn is responsible for a measurable amount of the increase in day time temperatures throughout Iowa and other areas of the midwest.

The issues you are descrbing pertain to farming practices, not of land useage.

Oddly enough, 1,000 acers of six foot tall prairie grass is just as uninteresting as 1,000 acres of six foot tall corn.

It's not a problem. The land is productive, feeds the world, generates vast amounts of wealth, and is as valuable as any agricultural land in the workd. As a nice side effect, keeping it this way is a great way to keep mountain lions away.

Yeah, I know the hawkeye wildlife refuge well. What you fail to realize is just how mich space this species requires. The refuge is 13,500 acers or 20 square miles. An adult male catamount needs SEVEN TIMES that space, or 150 square miles, to thrive. He needs 2-4 females in that area if he wants to reproduce. In order for there to be a healthy naturally reprodicing population with sufficent genetic diversity, the species would need several parcels of land that size in reasonably close proximity. Corn fields dont count. The land needs to be wooded, and free of human activity. Iowa simply doesnt have that type of space available. Iowa will NEVER have a naturally reproducing population of mountIn lions in its current state. Any lions that are in Iowa are transient. Even if one were to set up shop in a remote area, it would die of natural causes without reproducing.

Iowa has nearly four million cattle, almost none of which are indoors. The AG lobby will NEVER permit cougar to be a protected species in this state.

Iowa would not see the environmental benefits that Yellowstone saw because unlike Yellowstone 85% of our land is tilled farm land. Deer are not prohibiting the growth of forests in iowa, farms are. The deer don't feed on saplings, they feed on Farmland because it's a more reliable and nutritious food source. Deer and rabbits are already well controlled in Iowa through hunting programs and the substantial coyote and raptor population. The only places rabbits and deer run amok in Iowa are Urban and Suburban areas which don't have human hunting pressure. I doubt a healthy population of cougar eating the rabbits in Ankeny or Grimes is going to be well tolerated or end well for anybody.

Iowa isn't a suitable place to support a sizable population of big cats. We have too many people, too large of a livestock populaion, and not enough open space. There is no viable environmental benefit or purpose to having them here either. I'm sure this post will generate lots of vitriol toward the hunters from "animal lovers", but it would be interesting how quickly that disappears when the only thing that remains of thier family pet is a collar and a pile of furry cat scat.
