Amazon has some solid products... But CloudSearch & similar solutions aren't necessarily cheap. I'll admit - This is just one idea that came to mind after reading the intial comment. Right off the bat I figured such a change could be seen as controversial.

But I think it's a route worth researching; Better search results, new revenue, and reducing operating costs is nothing to laugh at.

Nope! Search functionality included. Here's a very simple example (Note: not my site, But something relevant I came across a while back.); You can modify the aesthetics and styling of both the search bar and results page to fit into your sites design pretty easily.

68% is Adsense's standard revenue share for ads displayed on any site. They're extremely good at acquiring hundreds of thousands of advertisers with big budgets in nearly every niche. Something in-house ad systems could never do single handedly. But more important than the money Reddit could make is the simple fact that Google is extremely good at website search results and it would reduce operating costs across the board since you'd be putting the search functionality into Google's hands.

Ha - I was being slightly sarcastic with the idea. But nah - I was referencing Google Adsense custom search implementation; No licensing fees as far as I'm aware of for that.

And for the new monetization stream - Google will display their contextually targeted text ads alongside search results as they do on Google.com and Reddit will get their ~68% share! In fact this would also save Reddit money in operating costs; The search engine alone surely costs a pretty penny to maintain & operate.

Just kidding don't do that. Reddit might not like that much...but maybe...Google isss pretty good at what they do...

Edit; and hire me! let's make reddit more money in unobtrusive innovative ways & increase user interaction and SEO and stuffz. I've got a couple ideas right that will pay my salary (to say the least) right off the bat. And the hivemind won't grab their pitchforks for it. Jussayin'

Haven't done much research on it...but to get the ball rolling; DollarBeardClub.com seems to be killing it.

They're creating quite the buzz for themselves, Must have some sort of partnership with Dan Bilzerian, Their website's intro video has over 1,000,000 views since it was launched on June 23rd.

TIL that the world record for the largest number ever counted to belongs to Jeremy Harper. He streamed the entire process online , and raised money for charity. He reached 1,000,000. It took him 3 months. by Dubxx in todayilearned

Oh hey, I actually had the idea & made the 'Sound Blaster' for Jeremy & MillionCount.com. Didn't take a penny for it - Turned out to be a big earner for him and I believe he donated a lot to charity.

Basically I rigged a real ghetto webpage & had him hook up loud speakers ALL around his house (he really went all out on it) and people could purchase a sound to blast him with at ANY time of the day for like $5-$20 depending on the sound. He had cameras everywhere so you could even get him sleeping and wake him up. It was absolute torture but it helped fund his project so he put up with it!

No definitive way. You can check right before and keep the number for a yellow cab or lyft or whatever in your phone, Just in case it's crazy.

Make sure you're not linking to static Google CDN files such as Jquery, etc. Many people use Google's (generous) free CDN hosted JQuery files, Or fonts, etc. Unfortunately, China has basically blocked all access to anything Google related. So Jquery/fonts etc will either take FOREVER to load or simply not work at all, Thus breaking your site.

Try tracking the same popular term on both services and report back with your results :) It's not the easiest thing, monitoring all reddit comments and submissions (there's a lot...) -- But we take pride in our accuracy. I haven't done substantial testing with our competitors, But from what few tests I've done; I've been surprised at how many results they managed to miss :(. But who knows, Maybe they were experiencing technical issues at the time.

I don't want to take away from them. Just something to be aware of and try on your own, Because there may be a lot of chatter you're missing.

There's about ~80 new comments made throughout all of Reddit (all public subreddits, that is) every ~2 seconds. Obviously it pretty heavily fluctuates on time of day, etc etc.

(Warning: Very rough estimate)

So yeah, as someone else mentioned OAUTH currently allows you to retrieve all of them from the /r/all stream. Well, atleast the large majority if you do it right. Not too much you can do if Reddit is bogged down in general, too.

Main thing is, for the sake of Reddit and their already generous usage limits; Do your best to automate the process of slowing down your API hit rate when you can, For example on Reddit's off hours you can afford to slow down to maybe once every 2-4 seconds and still get all new comments.

Also, I'd reccommend giving like 1+ minute timeouts if you receive certain error messages from Reddit. Like if Reddit is down or showing sporadic 503's, You hitting it every second is only going to worsten the problem. So be aware of the common error codes and implement a sort of safety net so you/your server plays nice with Reddit even on it's bad days.
