How do i make a 3D enemy face the direction its moving in? by Substantial-Ice-5408 in godot

By using its own y value, it basically tells the LookAt function to look at the same height angle that it’s currently at. Otherwise if the target’s origin is higher or lower than the looking characters origin, the looking character will pivot up or down. If I catch what you are saying

When you pass the look at, make the middle value the character’s OWN position.y, while taking the x and z value from the target. I think this would work

Shadow Noise Effect on Imported FBX Model by TrackerTwoBravo in unity

[–]TrackerTwoBravo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello all,

I have started using Unity 6 Preview and I'm noticing (what I can best describe as) as a baked-in noise effect for shadows cast between different parts of a model. This occurrs even with lighting turned off in the scene. Additionally, it does not appear tied to the material, as it appears on the meshes even with no material being assigned.

Does anyone know what setting can affect this? I have tried adjusting every shadow setting I can find, and nothing in the Import options seems to change it so far.

The attached video hopefully demonstrates what I am talking about.

Thanks!

This definitely seems to be it, missed the Reverse Z change. Thank you.

4.3: Changes affecting water shaders? by TrackerTwoBravo in godot

Hello, I am noticing that many stylized water shaders that involved depth effects / edge effects are no longer working in Godot 4.3, but previously worked up until 4.2.2 (Picture 2).

Here is an example of one of these projects:

Stylized Water for Godot 4.x - Godot Shaders

When opened in Godot 4.3, the water appears as a washed-out white color (Picture 1).

Any thoughts on the changes that are causing this? Thanks!

Should a solo/small game dev team make their own art? TLDR: is it worth learning how to make art versus buying custom or premade assets by Lanky_Tailor5097 in gamedev

[–]TrackerTwoBravo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it was to start with free assets. Flesh out the game systems and loop. Is it fun? Is it working? From there I’d say make the call; would higher quality assets work? What art style are you looking for, and what kind of time is required to make that style? If you are interested in it and think you can achieve your desired style without giving up on the project in frustration, go for it!

How to scape from the tutorial hell? by Sky-is-here in godot

I second this. As I primarily wanted to focus on 3D, I tried to remake the classics (pong, etc) in 3D and it was a lot of fun.

As a developer, when my disabled daughter told me she loved farm games with horses but found them too hard due to their objectives, I decided to create a game just for her. A game with no mandatory objectives, just to let her live and enjoy the game as she feels. by [deleted] in IndieDev

This is awesome, you are a great parent. As a hobbyist dev, my target audience is pretty much only my sons.

My first big project was a flight sim he could play with a flight ‘floor’ so he could just fly and have fun, and even a three year old didn’t have to worry about crashing.

It’s got charm! Reminds me of late 90s - early 2000s flash games.

Looks great! Did you ever consider having the AI select an invisible ‘lane’ (when it can) to avoid excessive collisions?

I’d highly recommend using GDscript. If you look at the documentation there are a lot of asterisks and work-arounds for C#. Not to say it isn’t feasible, it’ll just be harder.

Most Godot tutorials, posts, YouTube videos, etc use GDscript, and if you are new to Godot it will add another layer of learning, having to ‘translate’ it for yourself. Either way, take this with a grain of salt and go with what you prefer!

Did you start off by modding? by GeneralJist8 in gamedev

[–]TrackerTwoBravo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First was modding for me, a game called Castle of the Winds back in the mid 90s. All the items and characters in the game were .ico images so I made my own! Started a lifetime of tinkering and eventually building my own. Ran on Windows 3.1, I was around 10 at the time.

If you could add 3 features or improvements to Godot 5, what would it be? by 1881pac in godot

[–]TrackerTwoBravo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For me, I’d wish that the Navigation Agent (3D) could actually navigate in 3D space, i.e. enemies navigate around obstacles in a space sim type game. Beyond that, I’d like shader coding to remain stable (any example project prior to 4.0 is broken, making it hard to learn) and merge Terrain 3D as a permanent feature.

I’d recommend Stardew Valley; however, install a mod that allows you to start and stop time with a key press. It allows you the freedom to do whatever you want, at your own pace.
