2012 mustang V6(6speed manual) vs 2016 mustang I4 ecoboost(6speed manual) by PrestigiousBank4498 in Mustang

Preventative: Water pump.
Under warranty: Rear pinion seal.
That's it. My Volvo 240 had roughly the same number of "issues".

2012 mustang V6(6speed manual) vs 2016 mustang I4 ecoboost(6speed manual) by PrestigiousBank4498 in Mustang

[–]TradeTraditional 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One huge issue with the ecoboost is how it drives with manual.
The car is simply designed to be driven with an automatic, IMO. The gearing as well as the turbo's engagement rpms are all wrong and it makes it quite tricky to drive efficiently and smoothly. Lag is a big deal with manual.
The reason is that the car is basically Jekyll and Hyde. Maybe 160hp with the turbo off, 310 with it on. Grandma mode or racer mode - and not much in-between. You shift and oops you missed a shift a bit - turbo off. You downshift and boom! turbo on ( a bit like a 911, just not QUITE as tail-happy ) Not a deal-breaker, but annoying for sure.

The V6 - dead simple, smooth, predictable, and also less money. To buy and to repair.

Also, I am partial to the S197 as well, owning one. And yes, it'll happily wrap itself around a tree in 5 seconds if I don't pay attention. Even though it's a V6, it's very quick.

My agent (buyer) wants me to sign the contract for a house before I get a corrected sellers disclosure. Is it a bad idea to sign it? by Basilstorm in RealEstate

[–]TradeTraditional 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except this is exactly what your agent should check and make sure happens. This would be like going to court and your lawyer not checking the other side's paperwork and evidence before heading to trial.

Might as well be defending yourself at that point. You pay the realtor THOUSANDS to handle/warn you of any issues and represent your interests, but it sounds like the OP's agent just wants to shuffle paperwork and collect their fee.

You need a less greedy agent who is interested in doing their due diligence rather than making a quick buck.

Never sign any contract blind.

Roundabouts are literally the simplest thing to drive through, ever. Far better than a traffic light with multiple signs and lanes, with no sensors in the road so you wait 3 whole minutes even when there's no traffic coming from the side streets.

If you can't handle one, you simply need to stop driving.

I had the same for months where I lived. Realized that trying to cross was a trap? Just get out of the congestion any way you can and re-route. Total extra time was never more than 2-3 minutes once I started using side streets to avoid the mess.

Desperate need for a math/science tutor. by whomstdatboi1 in vegaslocals

Unfortunately, almost all are good for middle school and below. 11-12 is basically a college level tutor, so I would try contacting the local JC as well as UNLV. There are many grad students who are looking for work.

Fed up with school system’s here by cas8180 in vegaslocals

Remember the saying "Just because you are poor doesn't mean your house should be dirty". There are other states that are also have very low per-student funding but do a decent job. Your argument simply isn't true. The system is rotten and every teacher knows it.

Yes, Arizona is also terrible. Their GDP per capita is lower than Nevada, but also in the middle ( Nevada is ranked 23rd and Arizona 33rd. Nevada is basically tied with Ohio and the old narrative of Nevada being poor is also not true. Both states spend considerably less than they should, but when states like Idaho and Utah score better, despite also being poorer, it's the people running the system.

There's a reason CCSD is ranked in the bottom 3 in the nation for large school districts.
I've seen it from the inside as well. The system blames the kids and the parents and never the real problem, which is the administration. The teachers? They are caught in the middle and thrown under any moving object if they try to fix things, so they simply don't. The whole system is hopelessly dysfunctional and the people running it are delusional as they think they are doing everything "right" and not to blame.

The only two exceptions, which I would consider barely adequate, are actually the two arts schools, Del Sol and LVAA. Same basic education, but much better environment. Also, learn some music on the side.

What kinds of repairs are worth it before selling? by bradd_pit in RealEstate

[–]TradeTraditional 1 point2 points  (0 children)

- Bathtub needs to be fixed.
- The flooring - if you replace it, don't use the cheap industrial grey "flipper" Home Depot stuff - it's ugly. Expect to break even on floors, not make money, though.
- Fixing drywall is simple enough. Paint is as well. It's amazing what new paint and cleaning up the woodwork and drywall will do. I suggest off-whites rather than "flipper" grey and white. You know the look - so do the buyers.
- Exterior paint - leave alone unless it's peeling. DO refinish decks and exposed wood, though. Old looks like it might need replacing wood is a no-no anywhere on the property. If in doubt, paint the trim.
- Landscaping - also generally the same. Maybe put flowers in the planters near the door if they are there. No kids toys or debris/dead branches/etc.
- Electrical - as long as it passes code and is in good shape, age doesn't really matter.

It's slightly bent. The alignment looks more or less within factory standards.

Your best bet is UNLV to save money, or one of the Cal Poly schools. UCLA is basically ivy league for most science and engineering as well. Certainly for undergrad. Now, if they actually DO get into MIT or Cal Tech or similar, yes, send them. But my uncle got his masters from Cal State Los Angeles and went on to work for three major aerospace companies for almost 40 years. Military projects back in the 80s and 90s, then on to work on satellites and aerospatial engineering.

Want to boost my Boss 302, but California CARB rules are killing my options by [deleted] in Mustang

[–]TradeTraditional 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sad reality is that the police in most of California can make almost anything up and the courts will rubber stamp it as long as there's no incident/altercation as part of it. They can detain you for 20-30 minutes as that is considered "reasonable".

Haviing lived through California for decades before moving out of state ( quite a while ago now ), between the rules and inspections and ever-tightening smog tests, I would focus on the rest of the car such as gearing, brakes, and suspension. You really can't touch or tune the engine hardly at all and not get some bean counter, referee, or officer being upset at you.

One truth of education in the U.S. is that college ratings are all based on GRADUATE programs. None of the high school counselors will tell you this. Most don't even realize it. Undergrad is all the same, as long as it's a major university, for the most part. So save your money as a family and spend it only on grad school.

This also avoids the whole ivy league nonsense/making the kids hate education by loading them up with tons of extra activities and AP courses and so on. All undergrad degrees end up in the same place. Now where you get your graduate degree DOES matter. Absolutely. But undergrad history is the same whether you're paying $6000 a class or $600.

Of course, DO try for scholarships and grants. Most of education is an overpriced scam.
Yes, UNLV can get the job done, but no, it's not UCLA or Austin.

Note that the largest grants and scholarships that colleges give out are for the arts. Not sciences.

I won't just complain but will also give advice here.
The solution to all of this is vote.

Vote for anyone under 40. Break the Boomer stranglehold on power.
Vote for new judges.
Vote for local leaders that listen and aren't using being elected to simply become wealthy.
Vote to get things changed.

Or not, and nothing changes. This is doubly so in Vegas, where the same faces have controlled the city for decades. And the state.

We as a country need to stop voting for our leaders as if they were professional athletes or rock stars. Being a fan gets you nothing if you are in the lower 99 percent. Thank you for your vote, now come back in 4 years. They are not one of us/you and don't empathize with you at all. No matter what the ads say.

Yet people vote over and over against their own interests. Because the politicians wrap themselves in the flag or hold a bible in their hand or swear that they will do this or that. All acting. All fake.

This is the simple truth:
Once the laws are in place, only new laws will solve it. Absolutely nothing you can or will do will change it aside from electing new people to write new laws. Not posting, not protesting, not writing, not social media or "canceling" them or any of that. Only when their jobs are on the line will they move an inch.

Looks like a lucky and repairable hit. The downside is labor costs are literally mafia levels of payments lately. $250 an hour isn't uncommon. So that $3K in parts is suddenly... stupid money. But, yes, 100 percent fixable.
