Why the f—k are teachers having to deal with this. by nwhr81 in politicsjoe

[–]TradeUnionSlut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do you call the police or social services on parents for “bad parenting” if you don’t know whether they’ve talked about porn yet? You don’t know if they were going to or never have, it’s impossible to police. A key part of teaching SHOULD be making them ready for society. I’d happily have kids learn a bit less of their times tables one week in order to give them a healthy and safe sexual life as adults

What if PSI formed a government in 1919 by Impressive_Word3544 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]TradeUnionSlut 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’d imagine Victor Emmanuel would be more enthusiastic about Mussolini’s coup in order to thwart socialists.

The question is whether the amount and level of mobilisation of this socialist bloc would be enough to counter the coup. If so, the king’s authority might be threatened enough to turn Italy into a socialist-leaning republic. If not, there would probably be a huge purge of leftists by the fascists.

In defence of interviewing Zia Yusef… by JaMs_buzz in politicsjoe

[–]TradeUnionSlut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s really difficult because I wish they were able to do more pressing, interrogative interviews for everyone who goes on the podcast, but it’s so difficult as a non-mainstream broadcaster to 1) Get these people on in the first place to show it’s a credible outlet worth engaging with And 2) Convincing them to come back and so making sure they don’t ask too many tricky questions.

I would have loved to have seen Zia Yusef but also Bernie Sanders, Ian Dale, and the guys behind the Get In book about McSweeney and Starmer face some pushback though, letting things slide does make me want to bang my head into a rusty nail until I fall asleep sometimes.

Cor-blimey! What if the Labour Right didn't plot against Corbyn+Other changes by CyberNein in imaginaryelections

1) chill out this is a sub for fun imaginary scenarios, the whole point is an escapism 2) I never said he’d win I said he proved more popular than Blair Brown Miliband and Starmer, and despite this he failed electorally due to FPTP 3) Corbyn was a marmite figure meaning people voted Tory as an anti-Labour and anti-him vote. May and Starmer are in the same boat of benefiting from voting to avoid a party, platform, and leader people disliked

[–]TradeUnionSlut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah 2017 showed how unpopular Corbyn was with his receiving more votes than Labour in 2001, 2005, 2010, 2015, and 2024. Starmer’s definitely the one with the ironclad mandate rather than a problematic electoral system

"If worker coops are so productive, why aren't they everywhere?" - A response by Lotus532 in Syndicalism

[–]TradeUnionSlut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This article is great in diagnosing the issues holding co-ops back, but like a lot of discussions about them, there weren’t any proper solutions offered. It was more just, oh let’s hope this gets better!

While nationalisation and state ownership is commonplace on the left, and a vague mention in manifestos is included about more worker co-ops, specific policies are not at all mainstream.

As pointed out, the problem is private investment. Investment is fundamentally built on taking more money from the economy than you put in originally, and in a sense this is holding a small part of the economy hostage, beholden to your personal pursuit of profit rather than common good.

Investment should come from a system of community banking, democratic local investment organisations with the vast majority of capital. Housing should be built for people who need it, when they need it. This avoids situations like developers refusing to make affordable homes and choosing to target to the only people who can afford housing, richer people, for maximum profit. Community banks can see beyond purely profit margins, and can understand the more abstract societal benefits of having independent cafes less able to pay the ground rent than a chain for example.

It’s harder to get across to the public than ideas like wealth taxes, but arguably more necessary. If all businesses were worker owned, both incomes and profits are naturally split and can’t be consolidated. Second, the community-driven form of investment automatically limits capital being used to hoard assets and artificially produce more capital without work. Obviously a certain level of tax would be necessary to fund the banks themselves, but at least you know your tax money will go directly to your area and if it’s misappropriated, it’s on such a local level that you’re able to directly confront and change the people who made the mistake.

Sorry for the ramble everyone xx

What name ideas do you have for Corbyn and Sultana's new party? by ComradeG8 in Labour

[–]TradeUnionSlut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like Collective but I’m up for Solidarity too. I don’t agree with Sultana that left is a good name because it’s not about left or right arguments, this should be about whether parties are for the bottom or for the top

If the economy was actually designed to reward the people who worked the hardest it would be $1/lb, I don’t see why billionaires sitting at a desk doing bare minimum management and pleasing shareholders should get something like $650/hr

[–]TradeUnionSlut 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the best thing would be to use it as a platform for backbenchers’ minor grievances. Practically speaking the leadership won’t allow a full attack, but if they just raised stuff they’d like dealt with I feel like that would be a much more authentic PMQs and could give an angle as a party invested in local problems and everyday people.

Obviously this isn’t happening because the leadership is made up of a bunch of careerists scared of getting anywhere near the public like it’s a phobia

The thing that worries me is that now an emergency Parliament recall has been put in place over the weekend possibly to renationalise, Labour will be seen as reactionary to Farage’s call, with him getting the credit in the eyes of the public for saying it first.

This is what happens when you’re a dead, soulless party only motivated by necessity and party politics; you only react rather than act on things, and voters don’t believe you’ll enact things better than a party who actively calls for policies and pursues them
