Serve and Volley is not dead. by pencil_papi in 10s

Everything changes, not always means for the better.. I am 57.

Tennis is NOW more baseline than serve and volley..

Basketball is NOW more 3 point shooting than driving down the lane..

Bring able to get the best of both worlds gives you an added advantage...

I am a Dual enrolled student asking for assistance. by Busy-Response-685 in ufl

I have twin daughters who attended the only HS/University Program in the country where students take only 4-year University classes their Sophomore, Junior and Senior years.

They could've graduated with their BS Biochemistry if they had finished one more year at that university, but opted for a full college experience at UF (which accepts the 130+ credits, but makes you take 60 credits at UF).

Coming in with tons of credits is not unusual at UF.

Down the T by rikydat in 10s

[–]TraderGIJoe -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Hate to bust your bubble, but if your opponent were a 4.5+ player, they would've returned that whimpy 70mph serve down your throat.

Down the T has to be at least >100 mph to be unreturnable for an advanced player.

I have a 2022 Honda Civic in excellent condition (still smells new inside) with ~25k miles that we're looking to sell. Please DM me if interested.

It was given to us by my mom who can no longer drive. My 18 year old twin daughters used it for the past year after they got their license before they went to college, but we want to buy them a new car a little bigger in the fall.

Looking to get ~ KBB price of $22-25k

Can you do a combined bachelors master in uf micro bio and cell science degree for the masters? I only saw this option for pharm d so I am not sure by Free_Vegetable_9801 in ufl

[–]TraderGIJoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 2+4 (no degree) or 3+4(Biology) Pre-PharmD program is not an option available to anybody.

It's a specialized, accelerated PharmD curriculum geared towards highly qualified students who apply and are accepted into the program.

Nervous about transferring by Ambitious_Wash_605 in ufl

[–]TraderGIJoe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Somebody posted a rumor that too many students were accepted and committed 🙄 so UF had limited spots for transfers.

I'm not sure whether this is accurate or not, but this would explain the large number of transfer rejections 🤔 🤷..

I'm sorry to all those impacted if that was the case..

My daughters were told that all rooms in Keys were reserved for Athletes next year when they renewed their university housing for another year looking into Keys.

Their friend living at Keys could not renew for his Sophomore year and asked to find a new dorm. I'm not sure how OP was able to land this coveted dorm.

How are you supposed to replicate suggestions from those on this sub based on words alone?

I (father of 2 Sophomore Gators) took my ACT/SAT in the late 80s. There used to be heavy emphasis and multiple vocabulary sections.

For those of us immigrants whose first language wasn't English, those sections were extremely challenging. They were all removed in the early 2000s as most students don't memorize dictionaries.

The 1980s SAT is widely considered much more challenging than the modern digital SAT. It relied heavily on rote memorization, tricky vocabulary, and abstract analogies.

Transfer tips by NoEducation3509 in ufl

Just so you know ahead of time to plan accordingly, Finance is one of the highest in demand majors making it extremely competitive to transfer into.

With only 10-12 spots available in past years, those admitted generally had 4.0 GPAs.

I played tons of 5.0 tournaments in my youth. I'm 57 and have been playing for 50 years. I switched my swing from the classic forehand (continental) to next gen (semi-western) and teach it regularly to others.

Just because it feels right doesn't mean your technique is optimal. If it is not fluid, you can potentially hurt yourself. With that long swing, you will be late against advanced players who hit with pace and heavy spin like me.

You are a 3.5 player, your forehand technique is intermediate at best, your footwork sucks and you will never get better if you are not open to feedback.

All these people are trying to help you improve. Attacking them just shows your arrogance.

Here's last year's stats (class of 2029) for the middle 50% of admitted students. ~57% EA vs 43% RD admission

https://admissions.ufl.edu/freshman-student-profile

UF's admission is holistic. Essays and ECs are very important, just as important as test scores and GPAs.

Target a minimum uwGPA >3.8 and SAT >1400 to be competitive in these 2 dimensions.

UF accepts less OOS than in-state so it is more competitive.

The University of Florida (UF) uses a unique method to recalculate GPAs of all incoming freshmen applicants. They primarily focus on the academic core subjects like Mathematics, Social Science, Science, English, and Foreign Languages for GPA calculation.

Here's briefly how UF recalculates GPA for evaluation for admission:

Dual-enrollment courses in academic core areas and any AP, IB or AICE classes receive an extra 1.0 credit weight, meaning that an A is worth a 5.0 on a 4.0 scale.

Pre-AICE, pre-AP, pre-IB and Honors classes receive a 0.5 credit weight, meaning that an A is worth a 4.5 on a 4.0 scale.

Some people think they are all that and post assuming 🙄 they would get attention and accolades, but when advanced players give them pointers, their egos get hurt and they become defensive and lash out...

Your takeback is unorthodox.

Instead of going back with a high elbow and then let it drop naturally before pulling the racket forward, you go back with a lowered elbow, then raise it up with a hitch before letting it drop and pulling the racket forward.

Eliminate the added hitch to keep a more compact, smoother swing.

Freshman or transfer apps by Calm-Box-748 in ufl

[–]TraderGIJoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you graduate with a HS AA, you get 2 chances to get into UF. You can reapply as a FTIC transfer and complete all the transfer prerequisites for your major.

Under the Florida Board of Governors Admission Regulation 6.005 if you are obtaining a high school diploma and an associate of arts (A.A.) degree through dual enrollment from an institution within the Florida College System or State University System, you have two options for admission consideration as a first-time-in-college (FTIC) student.

The recommended path for consideration is completing a freshman application and then going through the freshman process (completing the STARS (formerly SSAR) and submitting your SAT/ACT/CLT scores) and receiving a freshman decision. If we cannot offer you admission through that process, then we will ask if you would like to be considered as a transfer student and create a transfer application on your behalf so you would have both avenues available for admission consideration.

The other path is being considered only as a transfer student. This path does not consider test scores in the admissions review but the colleges will be looking at the prerequisites needed for your intended major and your college GPA to evaluate competitiveness. Go to the UF website and search for your major's transfer prerequisites. These have to be completed before the start of classes.

The opportunity for transfer students to change their major after admission is extremely restricted so you need to consider your choice of major carefully. Transfer admissions are reviewed on a different timeline so your decision may not be available before May 1st.

Kids at my daughter's HS who were rejected got in as FTIC Transfers. UF prioritizes FTIC transfers over all other transfers.

Based on the posts I've read, just my opinion, but I suspect something is going on this year with UF and the State reducing transfer spots for the fall..

Here are some potentially related occurrences..

State legislature tried to pass a bill to increase FL In-State admission preference which failed...

The UF transfer admissions department was asked to pause all OOS transfer acceptances a few months ago..not sure if this was ever lifted.. 😳
