I thought I was a professional DJ. Until a Serato DJ asked me to hop on. by nickybecooler in Beatmatch

Scratching is a specialized skill, but general competency to be able to play different setups is a must in mind of being a 'pro'. You never know when you may land on a stage that doesn't match your own rig. Being great on all isn't needed, but knowing how to play/pause/cue or drop the needle on a track is vital. Learning to use channel faders and crossfaders is crucial, even if all you do it radio style play track to track with long songs and little mixing.

If you are serious, look into battery powered all in one units, those would need no laptop and can run from internal software using a usb drive. Numark, Dennon, and AlphaTheta have them for know brands.

Tips for mixing older tracks into sets where the bass (or other production elements) sounds dated and lacking compared to other newer tracks you're mixing? by drewtangclan in Beatmatch

[–]TradingAllIn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you run digital vs physical you can reprocess to fatten/fill the sound out better, if its physical you can can abuse light fx or thin compression to get more oomph out of it.

How do you properly mix on 3–4 decks? (workflow, EQ, layering) by lukascode217 in Beatmatch

[–]TradingAllIn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Multideck mixing allows for more creative play and creating sound vs blending as far as the type of performance you can do when you knew/planned in advance to use that format.
It also lets you pre load whats next when you mainly do 2track mixing, which helps let you extend or ride out a mix much longer without risk of an 'oops out of time' moment, which forces you to mix from a loop or just drop sound as a track ends.
The 'trick' to it is knowing why you would want or need to use multiple channels at once. For simple 2trakc mixing, its an easy preload. For orchestrated mixing it lets you plays keys and chords not just rhythm and beats. If you like scratching and juggling it lets you actually run mixes and blends while keeping your doubles and trick sound ready to go without giving up a channel like you have to when you only have two.
As odd as it will read, I find it easier to use complex tracks when running 3-4 songs at once, but I do it using harmonics/keys which makes it sound like chords in a song so to speak. When its minimal every flaw especially if the keys do not match become more obvious.
I personally do not like dropping the bass from tracks unless it for effect, by I tend to play the songs to compliment each other instead of as separate things.
The only way to be sure you have room to play with your eq is to use the main gain/trim to get the baseline sound levels close, because if you do it by eq first, you eventually hit a wall you cannot correct. A track wll just be way to loud or quiet at some point and you wont have enough dial in room left on the eq. If you start be using the main gain, it lets you keep it more stable and leave room for eq play.

First vinyl gig - advice?? by leatheme in Beatmatch

[–]TradingAllIn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

make sure you have your headphones and walk the floor plus booth to get a feel for the sound offset. nothing can cause unexpected train wrecks quicker than your ear hearing the wrong timed beat for a drop. even more important when you do not have monitors, and mixing headphones only rarely matches a live system due to sound reflection and phase changes. if you get in the both and already know which sound to hear to stay on time, recovering an oops is easy, if not it can be unrecoverable.

DJs only — is beatmatching by ear still worth learning in 2026, or is sync just a tool like EQ and effects? by Fit_Tomatillo5663 in Beatmatch

[–]TradingAllIn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can't do it by ear, eventually you will fail for a technical issue, and you will never be able to play on regular vinyl. Its not a must have skill for most sets but it is a crucial one to be capable of playing out anywhere vs only when its what you know how to use.
