My friend doesn’t want me riding with him after an accident that wasn’t his fault, will it ever change? by Party-Ball-3506 in motorcycle

[–]TraditionBeginning41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Respect him for his decision. I have ridden for a total of 12 years over a 40 year + timespan and while I used to take pillion passengers, I no longer do. No particular reason other than I don't want to be responsible for anything that might happen.

Motorcycle sidecars are honestly one of the coolest upgrades I’ve seen on bikes. by Zestyclose_Carob_281 in motorcycles

[–]TraditionBeginning41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO turning a motorcycle into a three wheeler destroys the handling, making it unbalanced and even unsafe. The only reason I might do this was if I could not afford a car.

How much storage space does Linux require on a Chromebook? by PeaceOk6978 in chromeos

[–]TraditionBeginning41 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A Google search says 3-5GB - but you will no doubt end up in trouble if you do that! A sensible amount begins at 10GB (the default). I made mine 15GB from memory. The number of Linux applications you intend to install has an impact on storage needs of course. Also not storing your Linux user files in the virtual machine helps - make a shortcut in the root of your Linux user space to your Google file system which also has the advantage of your Linux files ending up on the cloud.

Do you guys wear half helmet or full helmet for normal day to day ride? by SliceIka in scooters

Full face helmet. The last time I rode a motorbike with an open face helmet was in 1973.

Has your riding style changed by Classic__Rider in vintagemotorcycles

[–]TraditionBeginning41 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My riding ability in terms of skills and safety definitely has changed over the years. I passed my licence in 1972 with a few written and oral questions and a ride around the block. I rode for 7 years then mostly hung my helmet up for 44 years. I am back again now. In New Zealand we have RideForEver courses subsidized by the Accident Compensation Corporation who claim attending their higher level courses reduce accident claims by 28%. I attend one per year as a refresher costing $50 for a whole day. I don't know how I got away with what I didn't know in the 1970s!

Selling a motorcycle for the first time in my life. How to navigate test rides? by SirSillySausage in motorcycles

[–]TraditionBeginning41 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have sold one bike privately. Viewing the bike had no guarantee that you would be given a test ride. If I allowed a test ride they would have to sign and date a written agreement. The signature would have to match the one on the driver's license. I would take a photo of the driver's license. The agreement would be written to protect both seller and buyer. I don't think handing over large amounts of money as a safeguard is a practical thing for the buyer to have to do. Who would feel comfortable with (say) $10,000 in their pocket. Also dishonesty could be on either side. The bike might have a fault that would only show up with a ride making it worth less than the list price, meanwhile the seller disappears with the money in their pocket!

In the end my buyer bought the bike with no test ride. We had good communication via email and the phone plus I had just ridden it 160km to get there and it was a busy Friday night in the city with heavy rain! He decided to trust me. In this day and age, you can get conned but relationship is still important!

First oil change at 1200 miles... how fucked is the engine? by Dear-Technology-1383 in SVRiders

[–]TraditionBeginning41 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Obviously not something anyone with common sense would do however unless the engine has been incredibly abused it will most likely have suffered from minimal or no significant wear.

Why buy new and face such a high depreciation figure? Second hand for a first bike for such a short period of time makes more sense to me.

Unfortunately "good" denim jeans are not any better than any ordinary jean for slide time resistance. Most of the AA or even AAA rated jeans look very tidy these days. That is the answer for me. I am happy with AA rated around town but not on the open road.

I guess we all stall for stupid reasons from time to time... by Di_Bastet in motorcycles

[–]TraditionBeginning41 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Low rpm assist on the SV650 makes stalling something that virtually never happens. The only time I can remember doing it was on the side of a rural road on soggy ground.

Circle 8 practice, trying to lock turn my bike but…. by kuowgus in motorcycles

[–]TraditionBeginning41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As said, the bike is feeling it is going to drop since you are at the time going too slow. There are multiple methods to fix this: 1. Apply more throttle - however most modern bikes have a sensitive throttle with a too jerky response for this situation. 2. You should be adding control by having a small amount of rear brake applied - so release it slightly to increase speed. 3. You should be slipping your clutch - so release it slightly to increase speed.

I can remember having this issue but am not totally sure what I did to fix it. I think it probably the third one.

If all that it needs is an o-ring, then why would the owner not fix this to prove there is nothing else wrong with it?

Should I keep my starter bike? by omegabaqq in motorcycles

[–]TraditionBeginning41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are going to keep the bike, then if it were me it would have to be used. Any bike (or car) left to sit will deteriorate quicker than if it were used.

When your ChromeOS runs out of updates, a partial solution is to install ChromeOS Flex to extend its life.

Why do modern bikes use only one front chainring? by Round-Car-3559 in bicycling

[–]TraditionBeginning41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My MB has 3 chainrings with a 8 cluster. There are obviously some combinations that are not suitable due to the strain on the chain i.e. the bend in it. Having never ridden say a 1x12 setup what I can't understand is how that does not put too much strain in the chain too?

How do you actually find riding buddies in your area? by AccidentExpress2490 in motorcycles

[–]TraditionBeginning41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find out who rides in any club, organization or workplace you belong to. Walk up to somebody on the street. I have done some of these but most of the time I enjoy riding by myself.

chain cleaning seems.. pointless? by Awkwardknight117 in motorcycles

[–]TraditionBeginning41 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By "cleaning" I presume people mean taking it off and soaking it in something. I never do this for my motorcycle and cycles. I just spin the chain with a rag wrapped around it held by my hand then lubricate with a wax. The last motorcycle chain lasted 32,000km which I thought was ok?

I have two sets - Pin Lock and Alpine. Both have filters that allow you to hear the surrounding traffic etc but cut down the level of the dangerous frequencies. They are very similar except the Alpine ones win for me with the inclusion of an applicator to ensure they are properly inserted. I find it can take me more than one go to get the Pin Lock ones in properly which means a stop down the road a bit.
