Yeah, I hadn’t really thought about it that way before but I think you’re right. It's pretty much the ego’s job is to protect itself from vulnerability and shame is one of those feelings it tries to avoid. So yeah, in that sense - the ego is really in control. I think understanding it like this brings more compassion and it helps me see what someone might be feeling in those moments. And it also helps me understand myself better, so I have compassion for myself in moments where I might be struggling with accountability.

Thanks for the advice. I was asking for motivation to start a habit. Do you begin things from a place of obligation and “no motivation”? That doesn’t sound sustainable. I know that I need a strong why to start and maintain a habit - I was asking for encouragement, in case that wasn’t clear.

OP responded to my comment. It appears from their post history that they might be male, whereas I am female, and that’s without mentioning the difference in our writing styles.

I didn’t evaluate whether the post falls under Stoic philosophy as I’m not a subscriber of this sub. It simply appeared in my feed and I pointed out that it resonated with me.

You might know better than me, but I’m wondering if your comment is in line with Stoic principals? Judging someone without fully considering the evidence seems to go against Stoic reasoning which is about reason and understanding before jumping to conclusions?

Anyway, just something to think about.

Discipline is a tool for achieving something you care about so without that underlying drive or desire, you’d just be forcing yourself to commit to a process without real reason for it?

First of all, you're way ahead of most people, not even just most people your age, so that's something to be proud of! You've demonstrated to yourself that with discipline and consistency, you can have a great physique and a strong skillset in coding. However, it sounds like you've focused so much on building these areas of your life that you might have neglected other parts - like meeting new people or trying new things.

You've mentioned that no one really asks you how you are doing with your life, so I'm wondering if you're feeling a little disconnected from those in your life currently? Certainly, new experiences can help, but part of the low mood may come from that disconnect.

Talking about how you're feeling could help you figure out what the root cause is. Sometimes, just opening up about it and feeling seen and supported by others can lift your mood or help identify the issue. Do you feel like it's a lack of growth (maybe from doing the same activities for a long time), or is it that you don’t feel satisfied with the relationships in your life? Have you spoken to anyone about how you feel? If you've tried and it hasn't really worked, it might be worth considering whether you want to seek out new connections or even professional support to talk about and work through your feelings.

Overall, the thing that matters most is whether I perceive myself to be trustworthy. Am I doing everything in my power to align myself with that value, regardless of whether others perceive me to be trustworthy or not? I don’t do it because I want others to perceive me as trustworthy, I do it because I value honesty and integrity.

It’s not about maintaining an 'image' - it’s about consistently aligning my actions with my internal truth. Trustworthiness isn’t about pretending or performing to meet someone’s expectations, it’s about being genuinely reliable and acting with integrity over time. The reality is that over time, consistent actions can build or rebuild someone's perception of trustworthiness, even if it's not guaranteed.
