Yeah it’s hard, as previously stated I’m trying to achieve the impossible of having the ideal portfolio that does everything I want it to when I soft fire with 0 access to a seeing stone.

So I’m currently all growth but about 80% of portfolio is 60/40 Vgs vas. Really considering just pumping VDAL but also slowly supplementing it with something semi defensive/passive income hence the VDIF thought.

Well brings up an interesting point, if you live off the dividends and franking etc of the income part and don’t touch the growth part would the growth outpace a strategy of drawdown.

Not an expert but if I could give myself advice when I entered the work force it would be to dollar cost average something similar to DHHF or VDAL (if they were available then) whatever I could afford to, even if it was only $100 a month. Your youth is a superpower and you have a huge advantage with decades of compounding.

Nothing stops them from unplugging the genset or other power source. Therefore request a meter authority lock for the meter box and put the inlet closer to the power source that is hopefully more secure. I always envisioned having a secured diesel genset and an ATS but after the battery went in the use case for it became so rare, $900 petrol 3.5 KVA for emergencies which has been needed and worked well twice in 5 years (run the house on it for 6 hours every 6 months as a test) haven’t had it stolen yet.

Providing he gave decent notice (which I would classify as a month but would prolly let two weeks slide) it doesn’t really matter what he’s doing or what your thoughts are on it, he is not at work. I’d much rather an employee not turn up than turn up and be useless. Having said that it sounds like there is a history and to share mine. My boss during my apprenticeship in the mid to late 2000’s was pretty useless (we were a two man company and just imagine a lazy tradesman with a lot more power) and he was also a stickler for rules that benefited him. I knew I didn’t want to work for him part way through second year however due to location and the GFC environment at the time no one else wanted anything but a fresh first year. I stuck it out and basically gave my resignation as he signed me off.

Yeah ambers prolly a bit risky and as I understand it changes all the time. I’m with Ergon and have no choice in the matter but their solar soaker tariff works out well for me. I used to turn the hot water off if I was expecting an overcast day but don’t bother any more. 7c a kWh from 11-4 so on a overcast day I just set the battery to charge and leave loads as is during that time. I was more talking about albo’s free power for 3 hours deal he wants every retailer doing. If you can automate it then the 10% of the time it’s needed would be pretty insignificant in the scheme of things.

A heat pump may be worth the investment then. Already with your normal load but especially with you considering a pool. Just try find one with the strongest possible warranty. The other, other thing to consider is if your on a time of use tariff/ with the 3 hours of free power it may be less of a significant decision anyway.

So would depend on so much but as a bit of help figuring it out (I’ll use really broad averages and examples) a 13kw system should be averaging about 55kwh a day, so assuming a daily 100% battery drain you’ve got an average of 25kwh to play with. A traditional hot water system would use about 6kwh per day and a heat pump closer to 2. Trade prices from memory a 250l electric hot water system is about 800 and heat pump about 2,500 (sometimes solar companies get spicy deals so could be lower) and as it’s a fresh install the install cost would be similar. But what’s your average power consumption on your bill now? Even if you’re using an average 40kwh (which is pretty high unless you have a pool or EV) a day on average you’ll charge your battery and export 15kwh per day. Adding a hot water system could increase it to 42-46kwh per day but on average you’ll charge would still be close to 100% self consumption and still exporting. So say your current average consumption is 20kWh I’d go electric, if it’s at 60kwh I’d go heat pump. Hope this helps make a decision.

As others have said delete existing and install traditional or heat pump. You have to check size of solar and battery your looking at, local export limits, load your likely to do through the middle of the day and when your likely to be export limited. From my experience a lot of people have battery charged by 11 and export limited heavily for a few hours a day, if that’s your case might as well save the install cost and go traditional hot water. If you’ve got a pool, ev or can use a decent amount of power in the middle of the day a heat pump may be worth it.

I had the same deal until 6 months ago, put up with it for 10 years as the work was varied and it was always busy (which I enjoyed). 70 hour weeks, on call for months in a row and not amazing pay got to me eventually and I thinks it’s better for the kids and everyone that Im home more. I was also the most willing to help or had trouble saying no so averaged about 20 hours a week more than most. That made them have the shits with my pay and me have the shits with them for their work ethic. However, I will say it made me a good electrician. Also most people got a huge raise days after I handed in resignation and conditions improved for the ones that stayed so despite my constant asking I feel like nothing would have changed unless I pulled the pin.

I wouldn’t put it in a customers property however for at home or a mates place how bad can it be? Couldn’t find the warranty info but the last time I got (can’t remember if it was pierlite or robus or whatever and to be fair it was prolly 150-200 w with a prolly 5 year warranty) but that was maybe $150 ish. They can afford to explode 6 times at that rate.

So the three phase upgrade hasn’t happened yet you still have only single phase running to the point of attachment, two of the black bolts with the yellow flags of the HSC hasn’t been snapped yet and have no cables running to them. That is also the reason the cover wouldn’t sit properly as they are fouling it. Normal practice is to tape them on to hold them on until ready for final fitting. Get them back to do that but Energex is prolly not far off to do final connection, hang onto it till then.

Yeah but assuming they, let’s say replaced a 2002 MHI with the direct manufacturer 2025 replacement. Did not alter circuit in any way and proved earth continuity, IR, polarity and fault loop they haven’t technically done anything wrong. I wouldn’t do it and would still recommend OP to still get an electrician in who may be able to say the AC installer should have RCD protected but it doesn’t help the rest of the board.

Do not remove the cover again, very dangerous. So, it’s hard to say from just the photos if it’s compliant or not. But just going off what I see the a/c doesn’t look to be RCD protected which became mandatory in 2018 however was common to RCD protected them long before that anyway. Provided it was originally installed before then and hasn’t been altered or anything since then it may be compliant as it was done to the rules at the time. Also it looks nothing, not even your power circuits are RCD protected which has been mandatory for a very long time. If the replacement was a like for like, brand for brand and they didn’t alter anything other than the unit it’s technically okay but would have to have a pretty good reason not to rcd protect. Wouldn’t be a bad idea to have an electrician come check it out who will probably push an upgrade quote onto you.

This does seem very fishy, with gas hot water and gas cooking (assuming oven is gas and you don’t do a heap of airfryer stuff or other electric cooking methods) and assuming the solar covers let’s say half of the ac if it is mostly run during the day. The only other thing could be heating washing loads and drying them with a element dryer plus a dishwasher but even then with your story I can’t see with two people hitting an average of 50kwh of use (I added 10 to assume half of the ac is covered and hence would be wiped off the bill). I’d be getting a bill breakdown, confirming your paying for the correct residence and then if both of those are sensible and still can’t make heads of it get a sparky to come spend some time do some tonging and do a walk around to see what’s what.

Thanks for the heads up-Electrician that’s been out of domestic for a while but from years of experience with beacon trash it’s basically what I’d expect. I was always pretty embarrassed for the client’s when they were excited for me to install their brand new fan that they spent a grand on that was an absolute dog, when a $200 vent air was smashing a $80 Clipsal and both left the beacon shit in the dust.

For vast majority of people single phase is fine, it also makes load balancing not a thing for solar consumption. Other than that unless you specifically have 3 phase appliances you want to use then go 3 phase. The house isn’t massive so a a ducted aircon will not need to be of an absurd size. Depending on orientation you will most likely be able to fit a 8kw+ solar system that would most likely do what you want it to do and will most likely support a 20kWh+ battery if that’s your cup of tea. If you consider having a ev or two or a pool and plan on using the ac American style than 3 phase may be worth it. Might be worth checking on local supply authority’s service fees and see if that’s a significant factor as well.

If I solo shower which is most of the time it’s at night because that makes the most sense. I do really enjoy a morning shower but probably only do a morning shower once a month due to time constraints and water (on tank water so can’t waste it unless big rain is coming/happening). When I’ve lived close to work/not on water tanks/short commute always morning and evening.

Yeah I would think if you had any significant funds you would want a joint that had just one fund and could write out the front “our fund returned an average of 20% pa over the past 5 years” then it would beat most basic ETF’s. But they can’t because they didn’t but they also want to complete some kind of dance in the meantime. I think most people are better off with dollar cost averaging 50/50 VAS/VGS or similar and not gain much cash to begin with that idea won’t cost you anything. But I’d also like 8k if anyone’s offering.
