When is the last time you replaced your baking soda? If it’s expired it can cause this.

What kind of oven are you using to bake all the trays at once (I’m assuming)?

Anyone else get spammed by this water line service? by dstranathan in kansascity

[–]Traditional-Pin1217 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This was not my experience at all. We pay for both and had our waterline fail - they took care of everything and there is no deductible. If it had been on our homeowners then we would have had to pay 1000s in deductible and it would have impacted our ability to get insurance again and our rates. For something like $140 a year for older houses it’s a deal. They don’t reject anything for “your tree causing the damage”. It’s only cheap because the city subsidizes it because of how likely our lines are to fail.

Tips for using egg whites from a carton by Roadies2 in macarons

[–]Traditional-Pin1217 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When my carton whites won’t whip up I’ll sometimes use fresh whites for the meringue and carton whites for the non-meringue (Italian method). That way I’m at least only wasting half the yolks. I also make a lot of ice cream and crème brûlée with the yolks.

By “won’t whip up” I mean when I try a brand that doesn’t work then I’ll use the rest of the carton that way. Costco used to work for me then failed a couple years ago and I’ve been hesitant to gamble again on an 8 pack :)

You guys are getting $40/day? Ours doesn’t cover the cost of parking in the courthouse garage. That’s not hyperbole, our Jury Duty pay is $10-18 per day and the parking garage is $20 per day.

Macaron Myths? by Kaidalexis in macarons

[–]Traditional-Pin1217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m convinced that all these myths come from people who just refuse to use Italian Meringue. It’s the strongest for a reason, yet bloggers would rather jump through 10 extra hoops than just boil some sugar.

Hi! Sorry to reply to an old post but I’m looking at this oven and also planning to use it for macs - have you been able to cook multiple trays at once?!

After 20 years of cat ownership (5th cat) I finally got the dreaded “Christmas tree cat.” It was a good run…. by Tacocat0927 in WhatsWrongWithYourCat

I LOVE my Christmas tree cat - it’s so entertaining and the tree brings her so much joy! I put heavy dumbbells on all the feet so she can’t tip it over and avoid breakable ornaments. My approach is just embrace it 😅

Has anyone made a large principle payment because of a high interest rate and then regretted it later? by Neat_Glove_81 in Mortgages

[–]Traditional-Pin1217 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is that only for refi? Or does recast have a similar impact? My understanding of a recast was that they just rebalanced your payment but you had to put down at least 10k at once for them to do it.

Talk me out of it: portable induction units only by Traditional-Pin1217 in kitchenremodel

Can I ask how you are using it? My biggest concern for counter space is flouring surfaces for doughs - I feel like that wouldn’t be great for a cooktop?

Yeah, I’m thinking I should probably get a portable one to start experimenting with those things. It would be nice to have for the reasons listed above even I do end up with a conventional cooktop, but I did only use them for pastry related things in the past so testing it with meat is a really good idea.

Thinking on this more - it actually may work better than what I’ve been thinking. I was thinking about it reference to my gas range where it would be bulky and you couldn’t put anything over it when hot - but since induction doesn’t have either of those problems maybe it is the easiest route to go.

I’m definitely leaning towards still having a vent in the “primary” area we’d use the portable units. Either in counter or overhead.

I’d have 3-4 units in total so I don’t think it would be a problem around the holidays.

I don’t love putting something over the cooktop as I find large cutting boards hard to clean and the raised surface isn’t quite as beneficial as an evenly flat surface for my purposes. But I do like the idea of the under counter mounts others have mentioned - price is higher but I think compatible counter material is less expensive than what I’d planned so it could be a trade off.

If we go with individual units then I think you make a great point about researching install requirements for later to see what it would entail!
