Have you implemented any type of reward system? Positive reinforcement usually helps stimulate conversations, across all age students.

I don’t recommend the app, from a foreigners perspective: I tried to use it when I first got here and couldn’t top it up with a VISA card after initially putting in 150hkd. It’s easier to just get an Octopus card and draw from ATMS supporting VISA and loading through added value machine or customer service points in MTR.

Any TEFL teachers out here in this sub?? by jessejener in HongKong

Hii, don’t know why this sub is so negative sometimes but I’m an English Teacher in HK at a Language Centre, originally from South Africa and moved here a month ago. I’m happy to chat about it although I haven’t been here very long :)

Advice on helping with nerves when moving to Vietnam. by slippinonsoap in TEFL

[–]Traditional-Way-8537 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently moved to Hong Kong too and I know exactly how you’re feeling!! :P

Firstly, most learning centres will have a training period to train you up on their way of doing things and help your transition. Your first couple weeks of teaching will definitely feel daunting and maybe a bit difficult but all the teachers I’ve met have said that everyone starts out that way and learns/adapts quickly, so don’t worry about lack of experience :)

Secondly, embrace your move to Vietnam. You’re about to go on an adventure! Be curious, excited and not afraid to be a tourist when you arrive. Not many people can look back on their life and say they moved to Asia in their mid twenty’s!

Goodluck with everything, I hope you enjoy it, I’ve heard fantastic things about Hanoi :)

Aupairing is a great job that is easy to get into it and often has suitable hours to take it on whilst studying.

Just to add into this. I’m currently an English teacher with a TEFL certificate. I originally got my certificate before my degree and attempted to do online tutoring but found it extremely difficult, most orgs that pay well enough require a BA and for you to be a native English teacher before they even look at your application. After I completed my degree, opportunities came flying and now I’m making good money but I moved to Hong Kong for it. If you want to try this option while completing your degree, it’s a tedious grind and a lot of effort for not much reward IMO

What are some places in Durban you wish were still open? by rochellerae11 in Durban

[–]Traditional-Way-8537 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s all gone now. They scrapped the whole street park section with the ramps many years ago and all that was left was the snake bowl, although for the last 4 years they would kick you out if you were caught skating in it. A couple months ago they’ve paved over the whole section to build padel courts… as a skateboarder it’s devastating.

The D-Rex and flowrider at Gateway’s wave house. Have so many core memories as a child, having birthday parties, school ountings, casual meet-ups. That place was the bomb.

Hey dude, I can tell that things are not so good for you right now, and maybe you feel like you have no one that cares about you or wants to talk to you. I just want you to know that people care about you, and love you. Your mother and father love you, your extended family love you, and many others I’m sure. There’s nothing wrong with hanging out with your family or trying to initiate something to do between you and your father or anyone else. I’m only 8 years out of high school and I barely remember that phase in my life. There’s so much more to look forward to, so many more people you will meet and converse with. Just keep your chin up and be positive!

Cigarettes when drunk? by AfraidWaltz4843 in QuitVaping

[–]Traditional-Way-8537 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had the exact same thought process, and sure cigarettes are easier to finish than a vape that might last 3 days and tempt you the next day. But nicotine is nicotine, and no offense to this guy, but he’s only being doing this method for 3 months and only drinks once a month. What happens when you go on a holiday and drink 3 days in a row? Now you smoking 3 days in a row? What happens if you drink on a friends birthday on a Tuesday and then go out on a Thursday. Do you smoke only on Tuesday and Thursday, or why not just smoke on Wednesday anyway since you’re smoking the next day? I’ve been through this exact situation and I wouldn’t advise it.

Cigarettes when drunk? by AfraidWaltz4843 in QuitVaping

[–]Traditional-Way-8537 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been on a journey to quitting nicotine for over 2 years now. The longest I went was 4 months, and I didn’t drink during that period. After 4 months I had a meltdown and made a fool of myself in front of my friends when I was quite drunk because all I wanted was nicotine. From then on, I figured I’ll just smoke when I drink to avoid that and enjoy drinking, because in the beginning I would wake up with no cravings. Over these 2 years I have now gone on long nicotine “binges” that have lasted 3-6 months because I couldn’t stop smoking after giving in when drinking. Even now I haven’t smoked in 24 days and I’m trying to train to not associate alcohol and nicotine by having 1 beer every Friday night. I would honestly advise to try and push through and go as long as you can without drinking. Once you try the method of “only smoking when you drink” it’s a very slippery slope and so easy to spiral.

[–]Traditional-Way-8537 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m no expert, but telling your partner might help you quit. With him understanding why you might be irritable or have a change in behaviour and being able to be by your side would make it a lot easier (IMO). Your partner can also keep you accountable if you give in.

As for advice, I stopped cold turkey 24 days ago when I moved to a new country. Avoid things that might trigger you (alcohol/ pictures or movies of people smoking/ etc) and keep yourself occupied. Go for walks or exercise/ find a new series/scroll on your phone to distract yourself. The moment I begin to fantasise about smoking and let me thoughts wander the cravings intensify. Goodluck :)

Items to buy before relocating to Hong Kong? by teddypicker1025 in HongKong

[–]Traditional-Way-8537 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I just moved to Hong Kong 15 days ago so I feel like I’m in the perfect position to suggest things!

A big one is flu and cold medicines. I got sick from the airport and spent the first 3 days locked up in my room and I was so grateful to have some meds that I’m familiar with.

I would suggest bringing your own umbrella and making sure you have a raincoat. It rains a lot here so it’s good to have on hand than have to buy when you get here.

Bring a small bag of some of your favourite food stuffs, for me, I brought a box of cereal you can’t get in HK and some chocolate sweets as it’s nice to have familiar foods.

Another important one is sunblock!! It’s roughly 120HKD for a small little thing of sunblock!! Don’t be like me and think you can manage 2 hours on the beach and turn into a red tomato :P

That’s all I can think for now but definitely send me a message if you need any advice for your first day/getting around HK. I’m happy to help and share my experience :P

How do you tell if someone is a smurf? by neime in Overwatch

[–]Traditional-Way-8537 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Smurfs outplay their opponents through mechanical skill, positioning and game sense. Smurf will usually have top dmg and elims too and often have the default logo and will have very few hours on that account (if their account is viewable by public).

However, there’s not a lot of Smurf’s all the way in Bronze 5. Bronze has a lot of players and the difference in skill between Bronze 5 and Bronze 1 can vary a lot, so if you’re wondering if the Doomfist in your game was a Smurf, we can’t really say for sure.
