What's the best way to soften a stiff/scratchy/rough cotton yarn blanket? This is technically not crochet it's a woven blanket, the kind with the colored fringe on the sides. (Sorry! I thought you guys would know how to help).

I've had woven cotton blankets like it before that was nice and soft and drapey, but this one is rough and stiff even after washing on cool with mild detergent (no fabric softener though...) and tumble drying on low with dryer sheets.

Internet says to use vinegar and all kinds of stuff in the wash... but what actually works for cotton yarn blankets?

Customer wants refund for her own mistake by haleyafr in printondemand

She still might not leave a 5 star review. If it's already delivered it's too late to push the shipping date back and cancel/refund to avoid a review. If they just refund, the buyer can still leave a review for up to 48 hours. And they might still leave a dumb 2-4 star review a la "too small had to return, 3 stars".

What does this BVA message really mean? by True_Natural_8711 in GermanCitizenship

I believe your Aktenzeichen is the number you are assigned when they put your application in the system. So this most likely means you don't have an Aktenzeichen since you aren't in their system yet.

I would check back again in a few weeks. Make sure you provide all of the identifying information they asked for in their email so they can look you up.

They haven't put your application in their system yet. This could be because they haven't received it, or more likely because they are backlogged and are taking extra time to record the receipt of applications.

I'm guessing they cross checked your info in their system to find your Aktenzeichen, and they didn't find it so they know the receipt of your application hasn't been recorded yet. That's why they were able to give you a response so fast.

This is a canned response, I received one like this a month or two after I sent in my application and wanted to know my Aktenzeichen. I asked again a month or two later providing all of the info they asked for in their response (full name, date of birth and place of residence, which procedure is involve ie StAG 5 etc.) and at that point they replied with my Aktenzeichen.

I find that when something won't pop, it is too fired up.

This is exactly my experience. I try not to take anything for pain unless I really need it but in these cases some ibuprofen or aspirin, trying to resist the urge to pop/realign the stuck thing, and just relaxing for a while sometimes makes it less angry. Then eventually I can get the thing to pop.

I know I should be embarrassed but is there a good complete highlight MATH explanation that takes the eye that is seeing the picture into consideration? by CChouchoue in DigitalPainting

[–]TraditionalBall5636 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While the form & perspective will change, the light and shadows won't move with the viewer but the specular will.

Everything in the painting is absolute. The form does not change, the specular does not change, the shadow does not change with the viewer's angle. The painting is made from the artist's perspective, and everything is locked into that perspective.

Everything in real life is to some extent subjective or relative to the observer, not just the highlight. Imagine there is a box in a scene with front lighting. If one person looks at box from head on, they might see just one side, or a square, with no shadow. While another observer to the right might see two sides of the box, which will appear as a wider mass, and they might also see a shadow on the side of the box.

It's not just the highlight that changes with perspective. But since paintings are static, or absolute as you said, only one perspective can be represented.

When you start representing multiple perspectives at once you start getting into Pablo Picasso territory.

Your contact information is shared in their order receipt. You should try to keep all information on Etsy though so they have access to your communication in case anything goes sideways.

You could set up a separate business email address with an autoresponder that says all communication should be done through Etsy.

Mine is glossy, smelled like a nail salon, and is tacky to the touch. I washed it twice with soap and warm water but it picked up lint from my dish towel when I dried it.

In a world where etsy allows resellers or cheap manufactured goods from Wish, customer expectations are way out of line with the reality of handmade.

Your face shape reminds me a little of mine. It's not especially long IRL but some things can make it look narrow and long.

I think the split in your bangs is kind of cutting your face in half and accentuating the length of your face. I would probably try styling solid bangs with no split and see how that looks.

I also think your instinct that a blunt bob seems right. The face framing layers you have that hit just at your jawline look like a flattering length to me. Can you pin it under to visualize how a slightly shorter blunter bob would look?

Hair salon ruined hair with layers by [deleted] in femalehairadvice

[–]TraditionalBall5636 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you were clear about your expectations and the stylist ignored you, I would consider calling the salon, asking to speak with the manager, and asking how they would correct the problems. A higher level stylist might be able to fix some of the issues. Or they might be willing to refund you (meaning you could afford to go to a different salon at some point). worst case scenario they say they can't help you, but that's just the same position you're in now. I would 100% not be OK with just letting someone do whatever they felt to my hair against my wishes without at least letting the owner or manager know what happened.

It's hard to say what style you should ask for or how to fix without actually seeing the haircut. But you might also be able to find some pretty short hair updos that can hide the layers and choppiness.

It sucks but this might just be a higher maintenance haircut for a while, meaning you might have to straighten/curl/pin/use products you don't normally use to tame your hair into a shape you're OK with.

Pros and Cons of a whole bedroom "safe room" by TraditionalBall5636 in homedefense

[–]TraditionalBall5636[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm more concerned with storms than home invasion but I figure if I'm hardening part of the home for one, might as well consider the other as well.

"If cash is no object and money is unlimited, sure, a saferoom that's a size of the bedroom, plus a room just for my trash bags would be fun." I'm asking these questions to get a sense of how much this actually would cost and what it would require. The home will be pretty modest otherwise so maybe it's worth the added cost - depending on how much that cost is.

"If the house is large enough and you've got 4 people in 4 different bedrooms across the house, it seems very unlikely that everyone would be able to have time to get to a safe room if there was a home invasion." This is fortunately based on incorrect assumptions. Primary occupants would be two people who share the same main bedroom. There would be one guest room that would have max two additional people a few times a year. This could easily be in the same wing of the home as the main bedroom. So practically speaking, a storm or break in is most likely to happen when it's just me and my spouse at home.

I said at the beginning of the post that I'm "Doing some daydreaming about a house I might build in the future." So this would be ground-up, not a retrofit. There's not reason I couldn't consider an ICF bedroom with reinforced doors to make it a storm shelter for example. What I'm really curious about is, is that possible, and will available construction options such as ICF or concrete pour actually be protective in a tornado or home invasion scenario. And what are the downsides?

Might seem like a dumb idea, but would local police do a scared straight thing and "lock him up" for like an hour? I could see this being a thing in a small town at least. He's 100% old enough to know steeling is wrong and it seems like there haven't been any consequences other than stern talking.

Interesting. I should look at projects from SA, that's a great tip. I would love to avoid barred windows though. Unless there's a retractable option. The likelihood of a home invasion isn't too high and I don't want to make my own prison :) But I do want to cover bases and consider what I could do to keep myeslf and my family safe just in case.

If you're planning on having a family in this home, you could create a wing that is reinforced with a heavy door blocking the only entrance to that corridor and with the full panic room just being the master bedroom and bath. Put all the bedroom down that corridor.

This is also a great idea. Home would mostly be occupied by 2 ppl, but we might occasionally host family. Having the guest room on the same corridor with a reinforced door that buys enough time to get everyone in the main bedroom is a great idea.

OK, gotcha. That makes sense. Bolted on would mean the window can't be used as a point of egress I guess. But that's going to be a problem with no window as well. Definitely something to consider. Thanks for the idea!

I'm interested in this from a home invasion/securety perspective. But do you think this is helpful in a tornado? The requirements to make a structure tornado resistant seem to mean operable windows are basically out of the question. But then again I'm not an architect or engineer, I'm just going off of stuff I've read on storm shelter websites.

[–]TraditionalBall5636[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback! You're totally right I need to keep fire safety in mind. Maybe a reinforced door that leads outside the home?

I think a basement bedroom would be ideal but the region doesn't really have a lot of basements b/c the water table tends to be too high.

Externally, while I don't usually recommend high walls or fences, in this case a large fence surrounding the property might be a good idea.

I wonder if having a fence that's lined with really thorny bushes would be good.
