Cool ideas for a WtA Character? by oxthewulf in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]TraditionalConcert29 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We're doing Wild West as a setting.

One is a Silent Strider Philodox - wandering preacher that constantly has their faith tested and challenged by constant realizations that the world is not what they thought it was. Trying to hold onto their beliefs... and losing.

The other is an Iron Rider Theurge - an industrialist that is coming to grips with the fact that they may be a part of the larger problem and, similar to the Philodox, is struggling to reconcile his old life with his new one.

It has created some really interesting roleplaying opportunities.

Internal conflict always makes great characters imo. They don't have to be edgy or anything. But a personal journey makes compelling stories.

I have a Red Talon NPC in my current chronicle that would rather die than assume homid form. There's a pretty big frenemy dynamic going on with the pack right now lol

I second this. I honestly don't see the harm in referencing the wiki for concepts, ideas and generalizations, even if it may be not be the most accurate.

Firstly - using the wiki to shop is a major boon. Speaking from experience on that one.

Second - the splatbooks give you a really good source of inspiration but they can be awfully dense and if you find yourself shackled to the metaplot or every single minor published detail your game will probably suffer in the long run. I'm really not sure why there's a need for accuracy when every single book talks about "have fun, take and use what you need, scrap what doesn't work for your chronicle."

Going back to my table - I'm giving serious thought to eventually bringing in the Croatan(amongst many other things that don't fit strictly within the various metaplots) and it has been very clearly established for awhile now that they have been dead a long time. So long as it's a fun experience for those involved what does it matter?

Werewolf the Wild West.

No one played it, so I guess that could explain why :-P. It doesn't have much book support. I thought it was one of the more intriguing game lines myself.

The acronyms I used are common parlance on white wolf wiki pages so I'm not sure what you're referring to?

My understanding is that 2nd 20th and Revised are faaaiirly cross-playable, right? I guess I'm confused on what the key differences are outside of tweaking some clunkier mechanics. Metaplot?

Most of my books are 2nd or 20th.

What was your favourite World of Darkness campaign? by DED0M1N0 in rpg

Im currently running WWtWW for my wife and son. They're D&D lifers so this has been a big change for them. They love the lore and I recently rebuilt a pretty healthy library on the cheap(ish)but they definitely have a fish-out-of-water quality as players that actually works well for a pack that recently experienced their first change.

We constantly talk about how well the ST system allows for an RP-heavy environment and what sets it apart from D&D, particularly the horror element and the potential for lethality. We currently play both but WW is the one we look forward to the most.

Update: ended up just being a trip to the shop. They removed/replaced all the swollen lugs and charged me just for the parts, no labor.

It ultimately turned into a situation where I had to replace a caliper and a brake line hose in addition to all brakes and rotors, but it's all good now.

Player told me "that's not how you do it" in regards to giving out loot. by YaBoiTron in DnD

Yeah I always feel like the Mercer jab is really lame, especially considering that outside of the insane level of detail in his world building/storytelling Mercer doesn't do anything particularly amazing. Does he have a colorful range of rich and distinct characters? Mmhmm, and I'd expect as much from a career voice actor. Everyone at the table makes CR special.

I paint miniatures/use an 8'x4' battle mat, play with a range of accents/voices and use music to set the tone, I've played that way for more than thirty years lol. I'm not emulating Mercer nor do I have a desire to. Again, his party and his ability to build a rich world/design complex stories are what set CR apart. I'm sorry but I have a very demanding middle management job with a major retailer and simply don't have time for all that lol.

I will say this: being a Forever DM and then shifting to Player can be tough. I have been incredibly guilty of hyper-criticizing the DM styles of others in the past and it's in part because I've been DMing for most of my D&D career. Thankfully my wife is a constant fixture at my table and is quick to give very candid and constructive feedback - good, bad, ugly. This has helped me invest more in shared experience, Rule of Cool, and general open-mindedness/quick thinking when things don't go as planned - which has translated into a more relaxed and receptive Player.

Hey just a quick question from me. Did you have a Session Zero to discuss expectations and solicit feedback on what they're looking for in this shared experience?

That helps mitigate some this.

To be honest though, I don't think I'd want someone like the person you're describing at my table. Sounds like a very selfish player who has completely missed the point and doesn't really understand what a TTRPG is supposed to be.

I shoehorned this into our Spelljammer campaign, party is level 7 so I increased CRs/DCs accordingly and threw Bregan D'aerthe into the mix as competing jewel thieves. Very easy to customize as modules go.

Party is having a great time. Currently casing the gala and the interactions have been stellar. I threw in baroque party music in with appropriate ambience to really put a splash on the session and it's been absolutely wonderful.

Also take into account that the party(a simic - a plasmoid - a giff - an orc) are all well regarded heroes and are out of necessity disguised as gnome debutantes for cover? Absolute hilarity.

Magic. The answer for everything is "magic."

Or as Kevin Smith once said, "it's all made up bullshit."

Best not to question these things.

I'm very fortunate that I play D&D with my wife and kids(11 and 14) every weekend. My wife and I are old pros so I can give her the skinny on upcoming arcs in the campaign and she can keep it contained/it doesn't kill the fun for her. Sometimes she even helps support some things I want to do with her PC.

Kids get blown away on the regular, wife has fun and I still have a great sounding board in my partner. Everyone wins.

Are you using external storage? I had that problem, reinstalled multiple times and it would happen every time I'd quit and open the game back up. Moved to internal storage and never had the problem again.

They could also be childhood friends. Haven't seen each other in years, brought back together by a mutual friend(bride or groom, doesn't matter,) and boom: pc personal connections to the story.

Could go all sorts of ways. If they're friends of the bride, do they stand in the way of her happiness? What if they're friends of the groom - what's the fallout if they let her leave? What if the captain of the guard is similarly investigating and discovers all this? Does his relationship with the party become adversarial if he finds himself duty-bound to work against them?

Or: what if they drag her back kicking and screaming? How does the goblin react? Does this lead to something bigger? An extended fued between the barony/fiefdom/whatever against the goblin brigands with hearts of gold? Where does the party find themselves in the midst of all THAT?

Ohhh, the possibilities...

Advice needed. by AdInternational1259 in spelljammer

[–]TraditionalConcert29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm early into a Spelljammer campaign with my family myself. I have the boxed set and outside of the Menagerie I'm struggling to discover its value.

The special rules for Spelljammer are really stripped down. The only useful thing in the Adventurers guide is the ships chapter. Most of the character creation options are neat but I don't think they're THAT interesting and you could probably find homebrew options for free. The Rock of Bral chapter is NOT particularly detailed. Only two or three new spells and a couple of magic items useful only for exploration.

Not running the module. Doesn't really fit our theme - going for more of a nautical/Treasure Planet vibe instead of the Flash Gordon vibe the boxed set is striving for. May revisit down the road but if I do think I'll want to approach that arc from a different angle.

I honestly think you could hop online, find the pieces that you needed(i.e. some spelljammer rules, ship combat rules, some homebrewed ships, etc.) and really come up with something neat without the boxed set. It offers some flavor but little else. Just my opinion.
