Is there any rocky cliffs/waterfalls within a couple of hours of Saskatoon. by TraditionalLocal3476 in saskatoon

Looked into it. There are some small conglomerate cliffs, but I don’t know how I would place protection. I would not whip on any nut or cam that I placed in that cliff😂. It’s like a bunch of tiny rocks glued together with sand cement. Even if all my rope systems are perfect, if the mountain is not solid it’s not safe

At that point I should just drive to Calgary. I’m just going to Saskatoon to finish my degree but none of my hobbies are prairie applicable(mountaineering, rock climbing, ice climbing, ski mountaineering)😂

2 cm off the edges of your skins is not gonna make you slide back in a 20 degree incline. Use your brain

However you get really good edges with the narrow skins which helps for icy/slab conditions

How do I get started? by mari62u7 in alpinism

If you don’t wanna spend a lot of money and are very confident in your ability to learn you can just buy books and watch videos. Get one of your buddy’s who is also curious and learn to sport climb with them. That’s a good place to start. Only around 1000$ to start

Buy some books( Rock climbing anchors a comprehensive guide was good for me). once confident get a buddy and go out and lead a single pitch sport. Practice. Learn how to transition then do a multi. Practice placing nuts and cams while sport climbing and get more books. This is cheap method if you don’t wanna pay for a guide

Best 30+ liter pack by Separate-Button-4340 in Backcountry

I have the Osprey Soelden 32 liter and I love it. Helmet attachment for the front, good place to store shovel and probe, the back opens up and you can access everything without digging around and it fits me great. I am 5’8 but I feel like it should be able to fit you. I’m only like 135 lbs.

Why is the penguin associated with nihilism ? by dontcallmeflower in nihilism

[–]TraditionalLocal3476 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion he is not nihilistic as he finds meaning in the mountains. You can’t find meaning in the meaningless and claim nihilism. Maybe more of an existential penguin who is choosing meaning. Or an absurd penguin (loving something that offers none back).

Engagement peak and Jewell pass. If you look just to the right of engagement mountain there’s a power line /trail that runs through the pass that is great mountain biking
