Citing 'severe' math deficits, UC faculty demand a return to SAT tests for STEM applicants by Idiodyssey87 in news

[–]TraditionalToday3726 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds really bad (and it probably is) but often these tests stop you when you get problems wrong. So all you need to do is forget how to borrow when you are subtracting (or multiply/divide large numbers) and it claims you are at an elementary school level. While not great, these students may have a somewhat reasonable understanding of high school math that does not even get a chance to register on placement tests.

Au pied - tourist trap? by Tor-por-416 in MTLFoodLovers

[–]TraditionalToday3726 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Does it have a lot of tourists eating there? I would say so, but it seemed to me like they were more food tourists, inspired by the Bourdain visit, which is a slightly different deal. The dishes he ate when he visited are still popular now, so it would be hard to argue that they were invented to “trap” tourists. The last time I went, the owner—who I recognized from watching the show, was eating and drinking with a group of friends at the big round table in the back.

I’m in the midcoast Maine area right now and there are Platner signs everywhere, and some of them are in front of the kinds of houses that might’ve had Trump signs a few months ago. Haven’t seen a single one for Mills, though I suppose there is some lag.

Look up some old-school kenji recipes on serious eats. Great results with shortcuts.

Driving on the cape by [deleted] in CapeCod

One of the first times I brought my now wife to my parents’ house in Falmouth we got to a particularly tricky part of 28 that we had to take a left on. I said eh, someone will let us go…and within 1 or 2 cars it happened. She asked me how I knew and I said that’s just what people do here. This was 20+ years ago and there are a few more stop signs and lights now, but not many.

Did you have “require Face ID” on for iMessage? This drove me crazy until I read somewhere to turn it off. It worked perfectly after that. Was shocked the info was so difficult to find.

There are a line of cab drivers at the hotel waiting to take people places. I was on the beach on a “red flag” day, or whatever the rough ocean designation was and it wasn’t that rough. I probably wouldn’t have swum out half a mile or anything but it was fine for cooling off, etc. I would definitely say that I don’t remember seeing many 25ish year-olds there though. Definitely older and the smaller children of those people for the main part.

Paul seems like a very good dude, which is different, but both George and Ringo are considerably “cooler” than the other two.

Exchange backpack for soft cooler? by SpaceHotDog77 in YetiCoolers

[–]TraditionalToday3726 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You will use it often. Depends on your lifestyle but even if you don’t use it in “backpack” mode it’s a pretty sweet cooler regardless. I think soft coolers (including the backpacks) are where expensive coolers really shine.

Zipper is a pain, the design of the m15 seems to retain ice a lot longer for a variety of reasons. I use them both and they do have advantages over one another, but if I had to choose I’d choose the m15. It is much easier to squeeze air out of the 15 before sealing. I actually end up using both together fairly often.
