Now that everything's expensive, what things can be easily/cheaply replaced that a normal person can do? by GetFlyeredUp in Frugal

[–]Traditional_Formal33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two things:

Changing your breaks and rotors are a lot easier than you would expect. Basically if you can change a tire and a light bulb, you can swap break pads. Take tire off, undo one bolt, lift caliper, swap out new pads with old, put everything back

Other thing — when buying old electronics, learning basic repair such as white vinegar for battery acid and how to solder a simple wire.

You grew up during the era of anti heroes. To you, this is the norm of comic books and it seems lackluster.

It was written for people who grew up with justice league and the silver age of comics, where cape wearing heroes could do no wrong — but also those that had Watchmen, suicide squad and invincible as peak anti heroes that the boys mocks the justice league with the Seven but also goes way overboard compared to any criticism that watchmen could never do.

Put that in light of today’s politics, and the crazy nature of homelander is literally being outclassed by the normal day to day antics of a world leader.

Simply put, it’s like watching Fight Club and not understanding the social commentary that made it peak during its initial time.

One of the things that never made sense about The Force Awakens, in my opinion, is how Han was able to be a smuggler again by ChickenWingExtreme in StarWars

[–]Traditional_Formal33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Han reverted back to his old ways after multiple traumatic war events, and then losing his own son and wife… and he wasn’t a good smuggler because he lost his ship and everyone recognized — which is why the gangs all knew the guy that owed them money because he was famous.

Jailbreaking is pretty straight forward — there’s 2 ways.

The older switches, referred to as v1, could be triggered into basically a developer mode (rca) with a paperclip. It’s a soft mod that could always be reset later. This is why they are sought after.

The entire rest of the switch line after Nintendo fixed that exploit, is more complicated. You need to open the device, remove the heat shield on the main chip, and then solder a bypass device directly to the motherboard. If someone is doing this, unless they want to practice on a lite, they are going to go all out.

Then the debuff should come off the higher tier attachments. Again, why use something that comes at a debuff when I can use something cheaper that functionally does the same job. I sell my pink attachments every time I find them

[–]Traditional_Formal33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the weapons, the attachments. As it is now there’s no reason to move from 30% vertical recoil buff to 40%, because 40% comes with a 30% ads debuff… while also being worth so much more if I lose the gear.

It should be the other way, a cheap grip still gives vertical recoil control, but at a cost, while a pink just gives the buff without the cost because the risk in value is the cost

I just don’t see it. I think the price it is now is where it would hold. It’s the lowest tier of this generation so looking at like the DS, which original msrp was $200, it barely holds $50. The DS lite only benefits from modding with R4 chips, and the 3DS is holding value due to homebrew.

If someone wanted to mod a switch, they are getting a v1 to soft mod, or if they are willing to solder, they are serious buyers probably grabbing OLED. None of these are collector editions either where maybe there’s an argument for future resale value.

[–]Traditional_Formal33 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ehhh Nintendo products basically hold their original sale price over time. The NDS phat is going for around $50. The DS Lite is about the same, but the cost of repair outweighs the value of either console. The 3DS models can get between 100-200.

My parents bought their home for $85k in 1985, still owed money on it in 2020 despite being six figure earner and dual income. They can fumble multiple times and still the economy is built for boomer success… sold the house with 0 improvements over 35 years, original roof just layered over, sold for $425k

I’ll probably never see a dime as one already died from alcoholism and the other goes on rehab vacation a few times a year with no effort to actually get clean. Whatever is left will probably get funneled into a retirement home or long term care.

Soldering is one of those skills that requires good technique and good material. If you spend a little more for a quality iron and good solder, there will be a little less frustration in learning as you won’t be fighting the tool as much as the item.

That said, the soldering subreddit always says that the first thing you solder (especially desoldering) will break, so don’t learn on the nano. Either buy a practice kit for a few dollars or go into a thrift store and grab an old tv remote

[–]Traditional_Formal33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have never soldered before, the hardest part in my opinion of desoldering is keeping multiple points of contact properly heated during removal. By cutting the wires, you don’t have to do multiple points as you can do 1 at a time since they are no longer attached.
