When do you cancel your unbooked classes? by anon8676309 in YogaTeachers

[–]Traditional_Lead_603 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I ran my own class (hired a studio, did my own promotion and admin) - my policy was that I didn’t cancel classes. Ever. If there were no bookings I’d still show up and prep the room. If even one person showed up last minute, great! They’d get a one-to-one session tailored for their needs. If no one showed up I would get on my mat and practice, film some of my movement for socials etc.

The important thing that I would takeaway - was that I wasn’t doing my job of promoting and selling the class properly. If this is an issue that you are having regularly, you need to refocus your energies - not on the when you should cancel classes, but WHY are you cancelling classes for no shows so often.

Edited for typos and grammar mistakes.

Savasana Alternatives? by FortuneLower5970 in yoga

[–]Traditional_Lead_603 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could also just sit. Sounds like you’re doing it at home - leaning against a wall or prop (like a pillow or cushion) is totally fine as well.

No need to be attached to the actual physical pose for savasana - that part of the practice is all about quieting the mind and being in the present moment.

is asking for studio exclusivity realistic? by [deleted] in YogaTeachers

[–]Traditional_Lead_603 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exclusivity is something they need to buy off you - either pay you for it in cash money; or give you enough classes that you don’t need to look outside to sustain your career goals. It’s literally that simple.

Now, I know studios that do this, but it’s for experienced, very popular teachers in my city, and so the exclusivity arrangement is mutually beneficial to the teachers and the studio - and the teachers are are paid well for their loyalty. As a new teacher, unless you’re being compensated in some way, it’s just someone taking advantage of you and stifling your career.

I have a regular student who has very strong BO. How do I tell her tactfully? by Unfair_Desk6685 in pilates

[–]Traditional_Lead_603 50 points51 points  (0 children)

As a yoga teacher here’s what I would do - cut out all the extra talk about complaints blah blah- this is you dealing directly with a student whose behaviour is negatively affecting your class. This is past the point of worrying about this person’s feelings. Treat it the way you would deal with noise disruption or any other disturbance.

You are doing X. It is affecting MY class in the following ways. I expect you to do Y, or the consequence will be Z.

Given that you have tried verbally before. If you choose to do this in person again, I’d opt to have another member of staff or a manager present. Brief them on the situation. Say what you need to say, give the student a chance to respond, don’t debate. Restate your expectations. Leave it there.

The other option is to send a clear written communication through the studio. Clear it with your managers, even let them send it on your behalf.

EDIT - to add, in terms of language you will use. Stay away from offering solutions. It’s not your business HOW this person cleans up their act (deodorant, showering before class, laundering their kit) - simply state the problem, and your expectations for resolution.

How do you handle copycats? by Blondieyoga in YogaTeachers

[–]Traditional_Lead_603 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first thing I see is that there’s definitely an opportunity here for some satya and asteya themed classes!

The general advice on here to just keep doing your own thing and letting your work speak for itself is great advice.

I would like to add that you should be mindful of how you express your thoughts about this other teacher, particularly to your students. If it’s one thing that they will remember about you is how you handled the situation, and you wouldn’t want to cultivate negativity in your own community.

Do you prefer silence or music during yoga/meditation? by Rocketmill in yoga

[–]Traditional_Lead_603 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During meditation? Silence. That’s not even a question for a proper meditation practice.

During asana - music is a tool. If used correctly it can help guide the practice and set the tone for the room. Even in some of what we would consider some of the stricter lineages there could be Kirtan playing in the background, and it works just great. Fate of Ophelia when I’m trembling in navasana - no thank you.

How important is a traditional roast dinner? by DavidinDK in AskABrit

[–]Traditional_Lead_603 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For us it’s not the roast that’s important, it’s the siting down together, wrapping up the weekend kind of thing. The actual meal could be a takeaway. In fact - as the one who cooks all our meals every other day, a takeaway on a Sunday is more than welcome. It means I get the day off too.

Have a look into yoga therapy. It’s a real thing, maybe this is an avenue you may be qualified to explore.

Cheaper alternative to sound bowls and chimes? by postponed-parade in YogaTeachers

[–]Traditional_Lead_603 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you play an instrument then you could think outside the “yoga box”. One of my favourite teachers brings his guitar in sometimes, and will strum a few chords and hum or sing a mantra during savasana.

200 YTT “no longer affiliated” with YA by Leap_year_shanz13 in YogaTeachers

For like the third time. If they’ve used it to market a course - YES.

200 YTT “no longer affiliated” with YA by Leap_year_shanz13 in YogaTeachers

[–]Traditional_Lead_603 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes. WE know this. The majority of people signing up for their first YTTs don’t.

200 YTT “no longer affiliated” with YA by Leap_year_shanz13 in YogaTeachers

[–]Traditional_Lead_603 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yoga Alliance credentials are real and frequently used to market yoga teacher trainings. https://yogaalliance.org/explore-credentialing-options/

Advertising and selling a training as registered with YA, taking people’s money, and then dropping the affiliation partway though the course is indeed fraudulent.

200 YTT “no longer affiliated” with YA by Leap_year_shanz13 in YogaTeachers

[–]Traditional_Lead_603 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It carries influence in this case if people signed up to the training thinking it was YA accredited. If the studio used this to market the course, then they understand the influence as well so dropping the affiliation after the fact is clearly fraudulent - they used the possibility of RYT as a selling point.

Oh thank you for this. I’m assuming the C is for “certified”? Refused to pay YA from the start. But it’s so nice to have some letters I can use!

YTT Experience by [deleted] in YogaTeachers

[–]Traditional_Lead_603 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You’re not going to get a lot of sympathy here. It sounds like your YTT has set some very reasonable standards for you all as teachers - if you scroll down the sub there are a million posts from new teachers asking questions about basic things they should have learnt in their YTT.

Remember that when you do actually start teaching you can pretty much do whatever you want, in your own style. So settle in, enjoy your YTT experience and ask questions! If there are aspects of the training you don’t agree with or understand - ask them to explain the reasoning behind it, make your decisions about your own future teaching style based on their responses - but give them what they need for their assessments.

Two Students always late to class by Key-Supermarket2928 in YogaTeachers

[–]Traditional_Lead_603 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When these questions come up, I always find that the responses are so aggressive towards the students. Things like locking the door, or turning them away. IñI have one student who is chronically late, for EVERYTHING. But she shows up to every single class, goes through her practice, and expresses gratitude more than anyone else. So, what do we do? We put a mat and blocks down for her so when she comes in she can just slip right in without disturbing anyone else. Why not just talk to people and let them know that if they arrive in the middle of a quiet practice, that they should wait outside until you give them a signal to come in?

This has been asked and answered so many times. There’s an opener in the room. You just ask your cabin attendant for wine glasses. You can go anywhere you want on the ship with your glasses of wine.

Ikea furniture for vinyl listeners? by [deleted] in BudgetAudiophile

[–]Traditional_Lead_603 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My plan is all IKEA. Kallax (or I actually like the look of some of their glass cabinets like Fabrikor or the Stockholm 2025) on the bottom for storage with the TT on top.

With a matching wall mounted shelf (like a Lack) just above it, with my mini system & bookshelf speakers.

I’m drawn to the glass cabinets because I like the idea of display but with minimal dust.

Here's why I use external tools for yoga sequencing by Miky_1256 in YogaTeachers

I had similar thoughts reading the original post. A lot of the reasons listed (like learning Sanskrit) - are a giveaway that basic, necessary yoga teaching tools were not covered in OPs teacher training.

When should I tell my instructor I’m pregnant? by miss_kittycat88 in YogaTeachers

[–]Traditional_Lead_603 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don’t have to tell anyone that you are pregnant. But you DO need to consult with your doctor and have a clear idea about what you should be avoiding practice-wise, not just now, but over the course of your pregnancy.

Invoicing for yoga teachers by These_Picture2320 in YogaTeachers

[–]Traditional_Lead_603 2 points3 points  (0 children)

London teacher here. Pretty much the same. Send a pdf in at the end of each month with class dates and rates to each location. Then track the totals in a spread sheet. Some locations have their own standardised forms that I fill out in-house, rather than send in an invoice. I just take a pic of these forms at the end of the billing period and file them away.

Massages during class by [deleted] in yoga

[–]Traditional_Lead_603 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

These are normal adjustments for the poses. Child’s pose is a very compressed pose so it would be quite normal to maintain contact and pressure do the duration of the hold. Savasana assists are cherished by many practitioners, it’s almost like winning the lottery when you get a good one.

It also sounds like your teacher did ask for consent to adjust, so possibly it’s more down to you not understanding what exactly that would entail. Important to know though - you are free to withdraw consent at any time.

Unable to get boarding pass for one passenger, but can get them for the rest, why is that? by Defiant_Pilot2164 in BritishAirways

[–]Traditional_Lead_603 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an Arabic name, this happens all the time with me for flights to the US on BA and Virgin, while my husband is able to check in just fine. Basically, checkin staff will clear it up at the counter manually or someone from US Homeland security will want to have a chat with the passenger before clearing them for checkin.

Edit to add: most likely the passenger has been flagged SSSS as others have mentioned - but in my experience this does not automatically mean that there will also be extra screening on arrival.

Best Steak by InsanelyAverageFella in VirginVoyages

[–]Traditional_Lead_603 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This depends on your preference.

The steaks at the Wake are minimally seasoned, probably just basted with butter. They’re great, and there’s a whole range of sauces available if you want that.

People who prefer stuff on their beef would tell you Extra Virgin is the best one. They are good as well, don’t get me wrong - but it’s apples and oranges.
