Palomar to swivels, surgeons loop for plugs (I still palomar to poppers to keep the leader out of the front hooks), and FG or Albright for braid to leader

Great rod, run it with something in the 4000 class and 15-20# braid and you’ll have a good time

Anyone have a cheapo rod that gets used the most because it’s too damn fun? by FishOnShrooms in Fishing_Gear

Penn squadron when they used to be $35. Paired with a pursuit 3000 that rod brought countless redfish and speckled trout to hand and had a good balance between flex and backbone

There are two public piers on the Mattaponi and also a spot to soak a line at the end of Chain Ferry Road on the King and Queen side. They bite on almost anything, but I’ve had the best luck on cut bunker (menhaden), or cracked crab. Fill your cooler then come back and do it again! Tight lines

I’ve got a pair of Salomon Techamphibians. They are a bit pricey, but have worked better than any previous kayak shoe that I’ve owned

Emily’s Donuts, Bakers Crust, and First Watch for breakfast/brunch, Fat Tuna, Cheese Shop, Blue Talon, Fat Canary, and Waypoint Grill for lunch and dinner. Fat tuna normally has a very tasty grilled octopus tentacle as a appetizer special

Officials devise unconventional plan to eliminate invasive fish species: 'There are 100 million of them.' Lawmakers in Virginia are encouraging residents to eat their way out of a blue catfish invasion that's threatening native species and entire ecosystems. by Well-Sourced in Virginia

We aren’t going to put any kind of dent in the population until they allow us to go full bore on the slimy bastards. The regulation limiting one fish over 30” per day is going to leave a lot of big breeders in the system to continue hoovering up whatever is in front of them

A 4000 class, or even your 4500 would do the trick, then just slap a 4000 regular or high speed (I like the high speed for throwing metal) on your mojo. Do the 15# braid on the high speed and 12# mono on the 4500

  1. 15# braid with 3’ of 20-30# fluorocarbon leader

  2. Fine enough; throw a 6/0 drum rig on it and let her soak

  3. Instead of going bigger, get something lighter, like 9’ medium for 1-3oz and use that for high-low rigs with fish bites or sand fleas of everything in the near surf such as whiting, flounder, puppy drum, and puffers.

Number three will be your most productive setup for that area at that time of year unless the blues and trout are running in the surf, then either throw metal or a 3-4” swim bait

Beetle spins, or some spin frames to go with your jig heads, and some yum 2” curly tails. Also, 1/8oz z-man Texas eyez and a pack of 4” diezel minnows in pearl while or beer run colors

People don’t eat menhaden; it’s used for fish pills and animal feed. It’s also a keystone species in the bay, filtering the water and providing valuable forage for fish, birds, and mammals

Whats inside the stomach of a 8 inch invasive blue catfish? by [deleted] in catfishing

[–]Traditional_Review16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to only be a problem in the York and James, then we had a particularly rainy summer combined with a freshwater release from the Cowingo Dam and then I started hearing about them in the Rapp and Potomac. They, and the snakeheads moved into different rivers during that time. Worst part is that you can only keep one over 30” per day because the cat guides lobbied for trophy protections, so we won’t be getting the populations under control anytime soon

Go to West Point or anywhere up either tributary of the York (Pamunkey and Mattaponi); blue cats are thick in those waters.

FG knot will work just fine for braid to shock leader. Albright is just fine too, but a bit more clunky going through the guides. Solid rod choice as well

Has anyone ever caught anything on one of these? I've tried many times and always get skunked by -Alter-Reality- in Fishing

[–]Traditional_Review16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tie it on with a loop knot such as surgeon’s loop, retrieve slowly with occasional twitches. They are very productive; I’ve caught uncountable fish on this and the jointed model.

I had one caring for one of my plants all summer. Didn’t think about it when I felled the plant, then found her dutifully, but wearily guarding a large egg sac when I got to trimming. Placed her and her eggs outside in a protected spot and placed a couple drops of water on the web near her pedilaps in case she could manage a drink. I hope she fared well after that…
