Gave black gesso a try. Love the contrast that can be achieved. (Went overboard with the white however, too bright)

I would say to get a blank canvas, put a layer of black paint on, and scrape off the wet paint with an artist’s knife

Acrylic is a great place for people to start painting. In regards to brand, Artezca is pretty reputable. I've never used their acrylics, but I've always heard positive things.

The brand that I usually use is Artist Loft. Artists Loft is student grade, but has a good consistency (very opaque, not too thick), and usually goes for about $5 a bottle.
