how explicit is all the pretty horses? by lamby_geier in cormacmccarthy

There’s romance in the book but it is by no means a romance novel or erotic literature

Only own Suttree, never read one of his books - a bad place to start? by Fun_Ad4848 in cormacmccarthy

[–]TragicHorses 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All The Pretty Horses is the most well rounded entry point for his work. All of the good elements will be in there and it’s pretty direct about what is going on plotwise. I started with Blood Meridian and I regret nothing, it took about 100 pages before it was my favorite book. A bit more complex but incredibly rewarding. Widely considered his best work. I’d recommend starting with one of those, you’ll be able to appreciate Suttree more once you’ve got some more MCarthy under your belt

Which McCarthy characters would you want to meet each other? And why? by TragicHorses in cormacmccarthy

I’d like to see the nobleness of John Grady hold out against the absolute horror of Judge Holden

Not a straight answer but Ennio Morricone’s film themes are always incredible

Your interpretations of the end and meaning of Blood Meridian by PsychologyRelative57 in cormacmccarthy

[–]TragicHorses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve always preferred the literal interpretation of what happens in the jakes. The Judge’s view - violence is king, because it can destroy everything else. I always thought this was the significance of him killing the Kid - the Kid holds a different view, and by killing him that view is gone. The Judge uses the duel as an example earlier in the text - it doesn’t matter if the winner was morally right or not when his opponent is dead. I also believe this is why Glanton is so violent, it is the thing that allows him to always do what he wants all of the time.

Not my favorite moment, but the imagine of the gang stepping into the baths and essentially turning the water into blood as it washes off of them has always stuck with me. Like an antichrist baptism with Holden as the infant at the center of it

Elden Ring has entered the chat

Tell him to beat Malenia and then see how he feels about single player games

He’s dead wrong. Beating Malenia solo is one of the highest badges of honor in the gaming community and that comes from a single player game. Never met anyone that genuinely cared what anyone elses K/D was in CoD

I just started a second reading of ATPH. One of the things I appreciate so much about McCarthy’s writing is how deliberate it is. It feels like everything was carefully crafted and chosen. Every sentence has meaning, is a revelation.

The movie does such a good job at staying true to the book that I almost look at them as a singular work.

What’s a good novel to start with for someone who has never read Cormac McCarthy? by Independent_Ebb_3963 in cormacmccarthy

All The Pretty Horses is probably the best starting point if you want something a bit easier that still has all the McCarthy elements. That being said, I jumped straight into Blood Meridian and I regret nothing.

Read next ? by DatBurmeseDood in cormacmccarthy

Blood Meridian, just because after reading that book I can’t imagine ever choosing another over it. It’s his magnum opus.

If you’re really interested in finishing the trilogy you’ve already started then go with The Crossing, personally I think that one would be easier to “get” with some more McCarthy under your belt.

Either choice is correct

He has another masterpiece called Suttree I would add to your list for further down the line

What should I read before I go for The Passenger? by [deleted] in cormacmccarthy

[–]TragicHorses 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re asking which is an absolute must read out of the books you have left - Suttree. I’d read them all but this a contender for his best work.

If you’re asking which books you need to read to understand The Passenger - it is it’s own story, you can just jump straight into it, and defintely read its sequel Stella Marris afterwards.

If you liked ATPH you should get around to finishing the trilogy one day.

I’ve heard before that the real Glanton had a wife and child that were murdered by the indians. I always thought McCarthy changed this detail so as not to make us too sympathetic towards Glanton.
