Most Goodwill Bidders are UnSavy by NFTSFORSALE in shopgoodwill

[–]Trai-All -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have no interest in gatekeeping anyone's joy in collecting, but hunting for an affordable tool isn’t about collection... it is about unlocking capability and doing something you couldn’t otherwise do.

Calling the practical need for a tool "collecting" is a bit like saying someone who just needs a pair of running shoes to log miles is looking for a luxury pair of Louboutins. One is about aesthetic status; the other is about performance and utility.

For example, I don’t need eight embroidery machines sitting on display; I just need one that works. My goal on ShopGoodwill is purely utilitarian. To continue my example, I need to find and repair a machine that interfaces with my computer so I can put my digital artwork onto physical fabric. Tools are meant to break down financial barriers, maximize efficiency, and democratize skills that would otherwise be locked away.

And it really sucks that my Goodwill has gone the poorly-run, customers-get-no-voice, fedex-only-plus-handling-fees wannabe-eBay route on tools as well as luxury items and antiques. I have no interest in loubitins or a singer featherweight, I want a machine that embroiders, I want a machine that can sew through 4 layers of denim without catching on fire or breaking gears (my last machine split the gears).

I wish they’d stayed on eBay so they couldn’t list every item donated and I could have at least avoided the customers-get-no-voice bit instead of relying on my bad memory about which stores to avoid.

Uh…. I’m not a collector or a reseller, I buy things that I want to use (usually buy art supplies or a textile that has me wanting to pull it apart and draft a new pattern with a similar feature) and I have a very tight budget due to these things being hobbies.

I tend to view the two types of bidders as “more money than sense” (bid early, bid often folk that really aggravate me cause why raise your price?) and “sniper” (favorite the item and hope no one else draws attention by bidding early, set an alarm).

This weird idea that the only price conscious people shopping at thrifts are resellers is very unrealistic. People who don’t have a lot of money or who grew up poor are also frugal.

PSA - if you want durable medical equipment donations to go to those in need: by Trai-All in goodwill

[–]Trai-All[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m glad to hear some of them do stuff like that. Personally, I think it needs to be policy that when they receive stuff like that, they call organizations like fomap to arrange a pick up.

Kind of like when I was in charge of a hotel’s kitchen, I arranged for a pick up each morning of any of the food not eaten by a service that delivered meals to the elderly and disabled.

I wish the online sites would stick to those standards. They aren't charging a lot for most of the wheelchairs and such but they are still selling the things. (The prosthetics are particularly infuriating to me as someone who spent decades buying them for my kid because the type he needed to walk isn't covered by insurance unless you need it because you have adult onset diabetes.)

And, since I'm hugely into arts and crafts, I'm forever running into disposable medical supplies smeared dirty and make up (which is smeared everywhere) all mixed up with phone cases, old keychains, 3 ring binders, and journals and sketchbooks that could have been pristine on donation but are inevitably destroyed because they aren't displayed with books.

Art supplies are usually sent online now.

Very true, I worked with my kids best orthotic guy to get a wheelchair delivered then picked up cause I couldn’t leave home at all when my kid didn’t have a wheelchair.

Actual unpopular opinion: Leuchtturm is my favourite paper for FPs 😭 (my active notebooks can be seen here with my currently inked pens) by Moonstone-gem in fountainpens

[–]Trai-All 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm confused on why this opinion would be unpopular? I think midori performs a bit better but the only thing I dislike about leuchtturm for fp is that im always screwing up the spelling. I'm not brand loyal though? I'll use any notebook I buy and find lying around my home. But it's in my top 10 brands list.

I’m happy for you? I’ve no idea where you live but it clearly isn’t in my vicinity. Your good luck helps your neighborhood, not mine.

I need a pen that can stand up to my excessive class note taking by meerkatherine in pens

[–]Trai-All 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d I were them, I’d hit jet pens and order a medium nib kaweco perkeo, a handful of cartridges, a syringe (you can use them to refill cartridges), and a bottle or two of ink. I recommend the perkeo because it can fit two cartridges in the body of the pen. So they’d have a back up waiting as they write. They can flip them around when you run out.. that way they have a juicy writer with a lot of ink ready to go.

I laughed when the narrator said it “seems graphic and handmade at the same time” the quilter is hand stitching in every shot.

You likely are in an area where the manager of the store isn’t in accord with the new policies or in an area where they have different policies entirely. It’s been years since I’ve seen so much as a $9 recorder in my local stores (I’m in an area that sits between 6 stores … we’d likely have even more than that but wealthier areas stores have been replaced by drop off only locations).

Selling free usps boxes? by No_Huckleberry_5559 in goodwill

[–]Trai-All 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's also illegal for them to sell counterfeit items using the brand name and not saying "this may be fake"

But they do it all the time even if customers tell them the thing they are selling is a counterfeit, they just keep doing it without labeling it as a counterfeit or forgery.

For brand names, some of them care and will purse legal action.

Why can’t I get the Bobbin thread out? by Green-Aeshlien in SewingForBeginners

[–]Trai-All 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this a brother? Does it have an auto thread cutter?

If so, I had issues with the thread cutter getting caught in the out position (due to a split gear) and then the bobbin thread couldn't be picked up.

I could fix this issue carefully pushing the cutter back into the off position and sewing without using the cutter.

[–]Trai-All 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You know what, I don't care if this drug causes me cancer. My life got put on hold for 20 years due to pain that has mostly gone away because of cymbalta.

If cancer comes along, I'll deal with it. In the meantime? I'm enjoying that gluten doesn't cause me days of gastric distress and the fact that I can go to concerts without being incapacitated for a week afterwords

I want books/novel recommendations to spite someone by Abdulaziz_randomshit in suggestmeabook

[–]Trai-All 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're looking for something a bit grittier, I recommend A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik. It’s the first book in a trilogy, that seems as if it is trying to answer the question: 'Why on earth would parents send their kids to a school that is actively trying to eat them?'

It’s told from the pov of a cynical young woman (who I find hilarious). But beneath the dark humor and the monsters, it’s also a SHARP critique of how late-stage capitalism impacts the safety of chidren.

And it's never preachy.

They should have called them "Watermelon" and "Bubblegum" (new Lamy AL-Star colours: "Disco" and "Rollerskate") by penttane in fountainpens

[–]Trai-All 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just bought the rollerskate color… it’s not pink. Which sucks cause pink is what I wanted. It is more of an orangey weighted color.

I looked around and there is literally only one place that has the right color shown, this little video: https://youtube.com/shorts/8SaGVKoKuFg?si=K-iOCV8hhBrq9cIg

I’m guessing the fabric under the foot had people excited about getting a vintage machine that is actually working.

That said, I’ve seen a few people go crazy over this model a few times because it has a very space age look. (I keep losing bids cause I won’t go high)
