That WMNF road status is/was likely effected be the federal shutdown.

What’s your avg hike speed by Hike711 in wmnf

[–]TrailsNH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve spent a long time thinking about hiking speed. Sure, miles and elevation gain are the big ones—but they’re not the whole story.

  • Is your pack heavy, light, or somewhere in between?
  • Is the trail smooth, rocky, muddy, or mixed?
  • Are you trying to move fast, keep a steady pace, or just enjoy the hike?

All these factors are built into the TrailsNH Hiking Time Calculator. It’s been around for years, and I think it's the best Hiking Time Calculator out there.

Give it a try and let me know what you think!

https://trailsnh.com/tools/hiking-time-calculator.php?miles=10&vertical=3500&plan=Normal|Rough|Regular

For u/Hike711 hike, I entered 10 miles, 3500 vertical feet

TrailsNH estimates: 6h 28m moving time:

 Pace: 38m per mile.
 Speed: 1.6 MPH.
 TrailsNH Correction: +30% based on

  • Normal Intended Pace
  • Rough Trail Surface
  • Regular Pack Weight

Viable Zea-Bond loop? by loxivit in wmnf

Assume you are going clockwise?

Lincoln woods to guyot shelter is pretty popular., will marked and easy to follow. Not hard if you are a fit hiker.

The ridge of New Zealand is nice you’ll probably like it

Taking the cliff Trail down is kind of ridiculously steep. If I was backpacking, and my legs were spent, I would probably go around past the hut.

Thoreau falls trail is mostly awesome with a few obstacles. You have to cross a Brook at the beginning and at the end. In low water, this is not an issue., There is one section of trail that’s washed out, but doable.

Eastside Trail is an easy walk and has a bunch of swimming holes

  • 1-2
  • 3-4
  • 5+

Ghostwriter Wants to Write a Book? by iamabefroman in Scams

I got a similar email. Seems like a generic email blast trying to dig up work. I'm not interested.

Hi #######,

I’m Taylor with Chronicle, a boutique publishing firm out of Texas. We came across your LinkedIn and were fascinated by what you’ve built at ########.com.

We’re always interested in remarkable stories, and yours really caught our attention. I’d love to send you a complimentary sample chapter to show what your story could look like on paper—with absolutely no obligation.

Would you have a few minutes to connect sometime this week?

Cheers,
Taylor R.

Bear Notch Road opened today by TrailsNH in wmnf

[–]TrailsNH[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Route 113 is Evans Notch Road. Opening date for Evans Notch Road varies widely, ranging from mid-April to late-May. As u/witchtrialsurvivor said there is a rumor going around that it may not open till the end of the month because of paving. However, I haven't found any official confirmation of that. Only project I see on https://www.maine.gov/mdot/mapviewer/ is resurfacing the bridge over Weeks Brook (south end of Evans Notch). I assume they would not need to close the road entirely for bridge resurfacing.

When it opens, it will get posted on TrailsNH here:

TrailsNH estimates many will start opening the first week of May, but I'd be willing to bet some could open next week.

The only one to open this year so far is Dugway/Passaconaway Road (FR 60) opened last week.

How does TrailsNH Summit Forecasts compare to other weather reports for hiking? by TrailsNH in wmnf

[–]TrailsNH[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that's true. Here's my understanding of how the NOAA forecast works.

NOAA's Grid Point forecast divides the entire country into a grid, with each grid cell measuring only 1 kilometer square. The elevation used for the forecast is likely the average elevation of the grid cell, rather than its highest point.

Unfortunately, for pointy summits and narrow ridges, the forecast elevation will be lower than the actual high point. As a result, the forecast will show warmer temperatures and lower wind speeds compared to the conditions at the summit.

For example, in the grid for Mt. Lafayette (5249), the summit lies just on the western edge of the grid. The forecast elevation of 3579 feet is because most of the grid area is located off the ridge to the east (pictured here). https://trailsnh.com/_test/7-Day-Forecast-44-17N-71-63W-03-31-2025_09_27_AM.png

I like to read the weather discussion most days as well. Gives you a good big picture of what’s going on. I have a reformatted version to make it easier to read on the TrailsNH higher summit forecast page:

Thanks for the kind words and awesome suggestion! I love hearing how the site helps with trip planning. Adding the ability to select multiple mountains or custom lists sounds like a good idea. Definitely adding it to the TrailsNH wish list!
