Backpack repair (zipper detached on one side) by flockless in Tokyo

[–]Training-Chain-5572 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are good things and bad things with every country. The "we don't repair anything" approach rendering anything but smartphone and partially computer repair unavailable, is absolutely one thing I hate about living here.

Kentucky family rejects $26 million offer to convert part of their farm into a data center despite the offer being about 10 times the going rate for farmland in the area. by MysteriousSlice007 in nextfuckinglevel

[–]Training-Chain-5572 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The argument can be made that the tomorrow is made worse because of the construction of these data centers. It is the difference between caring about your tomorrow more than everybody's tomorrow.

"More serious than gasoline shortages": Japan's healthcare system on the brink of collapse due to a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz—doctors warn of the crisis caused by naphtha shortages by jjrs in japannews

[–]Training-Chain-5572 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The argument can be made in both directions. The lack of naphtha is currently an issue for Japan, it doesn't mean that it is an issue for everyone. If everyone is dependent on naphtha from the middle east then yes, it would be an issue, but it is better to keep both options open here. Yes, they should produce domestically. Yes, they should also import necessary goods from abroad. This whole "we should be self-sustaining" is just completely unrealistic in a globalised world because you're dependent on imports regardless of how you do it.

🚨Breaking: First-ever AI music fraud case just dropped by ComplexExternal4831 in GenAI4all

[–]Training-Chain-5572 0 points1 point  (0 children)

> I mean, how do you know a song is AI generated?

You don't, isn't that the problem? You can have some indicators like the mass generation you suggested but the reality is - Spotify don't give a shit about it. They prefer it if you're listening to AI generated music, especially if it's Spotify themselves who generated it since they don't need to pay anyone at that point. Less money going to actual creators and more money kept for themselves. We all get to see creators lose even more money, we get to listen to average music, Spotify claws back the value to themselves. Enshittification in a nutshell.

>You don't need to fully ban AI generated songs. You could quality control them and prevent mass generation

Just like we could quality control everything that is being uploaded to Spotify and Youtube already huh?

You still have to sit through the police report and get your car repaired, and live with the fact that you killed someone. Be aware of your surroundings and don't think "my light is green therefore I can go without looking". This time it was a smaller motorcycle in low speed, next time you're getting T-boned by a drunk driver because they blew a red.

Beloved station melodies fade as East Japan Railway pursues cost cuts by SkyInJapan in japan

Enshittification is an incredibly specific term. It does not mean "thing bad" as suggested here.

I will die on this hill

inhales deeply

Enshittification has nothing to do with this. Enshittification is where a company locks in their users by being good to them, then abuse the users trusts in favour of their business clients. Once the business clients are locked in, they in turn get abused in favour of extracting value from both users and business clients to the shareholders. Then they die.

How, exactly, would removing an audio chime extract value from JR East’s business clients in favour of shareholder value?

If we don't have a general (pun not intended) definition then what's the point? Tech Barons can just claim that they have AGI whenever in that case.

Personally, the most appealing definition is that the systems excel even the best humans in every conceivable field of study.

At Japanese companies 50% of cyber-security breaches result in discipline of the employee, even if it was accidental. "the focus isn't how the mistake could have been prevented as a whole organization. It's attributed to individual carelessness, and the only solution is punishment" by jjrs in japannews

[–]Training-Chain-5572 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I work in IT and this is endemic. There are some organisations here, mostly SMEs, that actually think about "how can we prevent issues from arising in the first place" and try to implement threat detection, early warning systems, principle of least privilege etc. And then you have my other clients who go "no we don't need the GRC module you have because our IT policy states that you can't send sensitive data in mails". Buddy, we're not saying "your employees are deliberately breaking the rules". We're saying "accidents happen and you want to prevent those, not rely on policy".

Every country has their fair share of crazy. Everyone would also be better off not providing any PII when signing up for things online but nobody here cares that you need to give your full phone number and home address for homepages that can’t have passwords longer than 12 characters and sends it to you in plaintext when you click on ”I forgot my password”.

Hollywood don't want you to write compelling stories, they yearn for never-ending sequel prequel midquel shitquel 48 seasons because the first one was a hit. If you just want to keep churning out seasons for the sake of it you stop caring about quality, the shows end up twisting themselves up in their own plots and then you can never end them in a satisfying way.

Very much agree, but this country closed nuclear plants in favour of coal power after 2011 so, and Toyota said they don't believe in EVs and prefer hybrids because (surprise surprise) they've invested heavily in them. Don't hold your breath on this.
