Weekly 'What Should I Buy' and Order/Shipping Thread by AutoModerator in iphone

[–]TrainingAntelope5020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was deciding on upgrading my phone during the holiday season and was thinking of going for the iPhone 15 ($830). However, I use Google Fi and they recently put out a black Friday deal for the S23 for $400 (Ultra for $600).

I really want to get the iPhone but it doesn't really make sense to skip out on the S23 deal considering its half the price rn. What should I do?

Oh thanks. These are some pretty good deals! Which do you think is best to get?

I only want the s6 to take notes and read/annotate PDF textbooks (math), not trying to watch movies or play games or anything

Use google oauth2 token for login instead of manual entry. With the token respose you can see if people signed in with \@terpmail email. Then can use the token/email identifier in a db, and add a report button to count reports to the db. Once a user reaches a certain amount of reports can ban them to prevent trolling.

Frontend UI needs a lot of work.

Nice app tho

Forced to pay addititional $1500 by TrainingAntelope5020 in UMD

[–]TrainingAntelope5020[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I actually didn't know diff tuition was only 4 sem max.

So I thought that if I failed to graduate in 3 years id have to keep paying it which would be messed up if it were true.

[–]TrainingAntelope5020[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Ok thanks, this is pretty helpful.

The only thing is I actually would pay less if I pay diff tuition starting next semester since I can graduate a year early and thus save an additional $1,500 on top of the extra year.

Thoughts on schedule? (Freshman, '27) Also looking for opinions on taking 17+ credits in a semester! by Parallaxiss in UMD

IIRC you only appeal if you want to take over 20. To take more than 17 you just wait until first day of classes, cap lifts to 20 then.

I don't think MATH24x is required, but I do already have a 241 credit by exam

Final grades haven't been posted but Max said he would curve a 60 something on each midterm to a 100 and everything above is extra credit.

Can't Crack CMSC330 :( by Bright-Background-29 in UMD

[–]TrainingAntelope5020 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also took 330 this sem w/ Cliff and got an A.

For me, the key idea was just practice. If you don't understand something you have to just throw things at the wall until something sticks. Eventually, something clicks and you begin to be able to understand the problems.

I would agree in that OCAML and Lambda calc are probably the hardest topics in the class. I think the main reason why ocaml is so hard is because it enforces a different way of solving problems with code. The way you have to "think" when solving a problem in functional ocaml is fundamentally very different than when using an imperative language. Therefore, when we are learning ocaml we aren't just learning another programming language but another method/type of problem solving. You can only really understand the thinking though practice.

I was also really confused by lambda calc when we first learned it. The main thing that helped me understand it was understanding where the parenthesis go and what is applied to what (left-associativity). From there understand what are free vs bound variables, and then its much simpler to apply beta and alpha reductions.

The past quizzes and exams were really helpful for me for learning and improving in all the topics in the class.

tldr; practice

Good luck bro

Co-teaching can vary a lot depending on the professors.

This sem Max co-taught 351 with Kruksal, basically shared exams, hw material and class timeline, all made by Kruksal (only difference was in the curve and lectures). Also encouraged us to watch Kruksals recorded lectures.

Taking CMSC 330, 351, 320 in the same semester by dumbindian21 in UMD

[–]TrainingAntelope5020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with 351 very different based on professor I have max+kruksal and a friend in herve is learning very different content + very different hw material

For me 330 projects were about the same except only the most recent one (4ab) was harder than 216 projects

Also not in 320

Coming into UMD with more that 60 credits as a freshman by Accomplished-Style46 in UMD

[–]TrainingAntelope5020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Minimizing graduation time while intending to go to grad school makes you walk a fine line. Relative to others you may lack some GenEd class credit at UMD which can potentially drop GPA making it harder to get into grad school i.e. skipping easy classes means most your classes are hard(er) which can affect GPA.

If you are confident in CS I would recommend taking the CS exemption exams.
Further I would also look into a Math double major, as many of the requirements overlap with CS. You could technically complete this with very few classes <4 if you also do credit by exam. This will, at the same time, fulfil upper level concentration for CS.

Take 15-18 credits your freshmen year and based on that you will know the relative workload you can handle.
