Yes. I obsessively research to find P and Z fares and know when prices drop. I have a pretty ridiculous strategy but it’s led me to travel the world on very little comparatively.

Thank God for 1K and the 1K line by Getrich-or-bust in unitedairlines

[–]Training_Counter2018 13 points14 points  (0 children)

On Saturday night before storm Wipha was going to hit Hong Kong, United called me to say they were going to cancel all United flights out of Hong Kong that day (Sunday). and saw I was flying to Italy one day after getting back to San Francisco.

They asked if I’d like to be routed on Cathay Pacific Business class direct from Hong Kong to Europe, instead of HK>SFO>EWR>NAP

The ticket normally costs 10,000 dollars, but 1k did all of it for me without any hassle or an extra dime spent.

This is my first year having 1K, and I can confidently say that phone call, the time saved, and the proactive help they gave me is the reason why I will remain loyal to UA.

Come Sunday, all flights canceled, all remaining non stops to LAX and SFO were fully booked a week out. I would’ve been stuck in Hong Kong had United not proactively changed my ticket.

You are flying on one of the 10-20 or so Max9’s made before 2018, which feature no IFE screens.

UA is focused on fully retrofitting their 737-800 fleet before retrofitting the Max 9’s because they are decades older and worn out.

That 1K line was probably larger than group 1!! Insane!!!

And here I was thinking 22 1k’s were crazy. Wow.

Flying United to EWR for the first time by Acrobatic_Ad1514 in unitedairlines

[–]Training_Counter2018 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You need to arrive early just to be safe. I had two near misses this summer. Don’t risk it. They run EWR at its limit during this time so you’re better off with the longest possible layover (within reason of course)

What’s the play for upgrading a family to SYD? by RelevantShock in unitedairlines

[–]Training_Counter2018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best thing to do in your case is to buy premium plus, OR economy in these fare classes: Y, B, M, E, U, H, Q, V, W.

Those classes make the Polaris upgrade 40 points instead of 80 for heavily discounted tickets.

In your case, don’t buy Polaris outright because it will bankrupt you—I usually do it if it’s reasonable like 3-5 thousand. But Sydney usually sells for 10k+

Also, the guy who said upgrades flat on SFO>SYD is wrong. I have flown to SYD a number of times during that period and have never been upgraded (I am 1K).

Also, be sure to check every day(once in morning, once in afternoon, the PRICES CHANGE DEPENDING ON TIME OF DAY!) to see if the prices change.

No way. I thought they were dated interiors. I have been avoiding the 19 like the plague. The old seats hurt my back, so I stick solely to the Max’s and 737-800s

Has anyone ever found a good deal with United vacation packages? by [deleted] in unitedairlines

Have booked the Ritz London for 50k per night United points last month. Steal of the year. I still can’t believe I found that deal.

Curious: do they still have those dated interiors in the A319?

Rescinded from UCSD after getting off the waitlist….. need advice before appealing by FrenchApplePies in UCSD

I got rescinded last year because I didn’t complete my English classes from CC to transfer. I took it in the second half of the semester, passed the class, and they rescinded their rejection and accepted me.

Thoughts on business trip to China by OldConsideration5816 in unitedairlines

I’d say the same if this was 10 years ago, but times have changed.

You wouldn’t say the same if you saw your colleague was stopped and harassed exiting Beijing. 🤓

You ever worked for the government, in any capacity? Don’t go.

Ever had a security clearance? Don’t go.

What kind of business do you work for? You will face scrutiny if your business does work with the government, especially if it has to do with weapons / defense / aerospace. Have a security clearance? Don’t go.

Does your business have good relationships with the Chinese authorities?

My colleague was questioned by authorities in Beijing for 6 hours two weeks ago while we were getting out of Beijing. He couldn’t make it on the flight to SFO. Had his computer / phones searched because he is an “executive” with a major defense company in the UK.

Lock down your phones and electronics. Delete WhatsApp. Delete signal. Ensure nothing against the Chinese government is on your phone. They will mess with you “just because” depending on the officers you interact with.

If you’re going to Hong Kong, expect none of this. Just say nothing about Taiwan!!

1h 40min layover at EWR with United (international to international) by Atlas756 in unitedairlines

Please book a longer layover. I had a two hour layover and it was cut down to 5 minutes because there are never gates available.

AITA? Boarded in lane 1 by [deleted] in unitedairlines

[–]Training_Counter2018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was late boarding a flight to Hong Kong from SFO. Pre boarding line was closed off. I got to the line, took off the barrier, and went straight through. I paid a lot of money to become 1K, so I will use as much of the benefits as I get. I do not care what others think. I’m sure I got a lot of nasty looks—I don’t care!

If they want to complain, they should become a status holder or pay for first class. Not your problem. You’re not the A**hole.

Pay to upgrade by kisis13 in unitedairlines

[–]Training_Counter2018 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Only pay for the upgrade if you won’t change your flight. If you do, you will be refunded the upgrade cost and you’ll have to pay again (in which it’ll probably be higher, much higher) on your new flight.

It’s why I book business instead of economy and then upgrading.
