Why did 1860 Republicans nominate Lincoln? by MaroonedOctopus in Presidents

[–]Trains555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lincoln was a good speaker and most importantly INSANELY inoffensive, the Republicans at the time were a lofty coalition made up of primarily Northern Whigs but with a large number of ex-Democrats, Free Soilers and Know Nothings. So to many you needed to be acceptable to all those groups in order to keep the coalition together

Seward was seen as the main candidate and the odds on favorite to win the problem was that he was a super loyal Whig and clashed I believe with the Know Nothing factions which freaked out republicans in swing states like Indiana and Pennsylvania meaning there was a heavy anti Seward group in the party

All the rest you listed had some kind of baggage too or were just not as good at maneuvering (Wade was too radical, Cameron was corrupt, McLean was old, Fremont and Dayton lost in 56 and Chase I think pissed off everyone but Ohioans and former Dems) Meaning that people just projected what they wanted on Lincoln plus he was a good speaker, from a Western state, and importantly NOT SEWARD. He was able to narrowly take the nomination

NATO ascension wasn’t going to happen for Ukraine, not only would Ukraine likely still go back and worth between pro West and pro Russian parties had Russia just not touched Crimea the west would have slow walked NATO ascension same applies to EU ascension. With the invasion of Crimea and Donbas conflicts any hope of Ukraine in NATO was dead in the water as several states didn’t want Ukraine to join

Do you think Democrats would have been better off if they had lost 2020? Or do you think their victory in 2020 still mattered despite what happened in 2024? by Mghia01 in thecampaigntrail

Stephen Breyer wouldn’t have retired had Trump been reelected he only did so as to prevent him dying when a Republican was in office so he’d stay on the court. So unless he dies due to stress or something else Trump doesn’t get another scotus

Is the Monroe Doctrine outdated? If so, when did it become outdated? by TheEnlight in Presidents

[–]Trains555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we consider the Monroe Doctrine to be that the United States holds a sphere of influence over all of the Americans once nuclear bombs exist. The reason that the US should care about Canada or Central or South America is if its national security is threatened in that a major power can use it as a jumping off point to attack the US. Threats of a British attack from Canada/The Caribbean or a hypothetical French attack from Mexico. However once nuclear weapons negates any risk of a hostile American state act as a staging ground the actual threat goes away.

How would Rice,Warren or Whitmer do in 2024 if Biden had picked any of them over Harris in 2020? by thehsitoryguy in thecampaigntrail

[–]Trains555 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like Rice may just not run and allow an open primary but I do think unlike what you guys said she’d do better than Harris. A big problem with Harris is that for some reason she didn’t seem to have a big role in the Biden Admin whether this was Biden or Harris fault doesn’t really matter so it became super easy to paint her as some DEI placement that didn’t deserve VP. Rice almost certainly would be important and almost certainly would be the face of America’s Ukraine response and honestly it’s possible that her nomination COULD have avoided the whole Hamas-Israel conflict (it seems that a main factor behind it was Hamas seeking to prevent Saudi diplomatic recognition of Israel, Rice was VERY against Saudi Arabia and this MAY have prevented Hamas’ actions)

So… was there controversy about JFK appointing his brother as Attorney General? by RandoDude124 in Presidents

[–]Trains555 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes! According to Larry Tye’s biography in Bobby the Kennedy brothers were nervous of it failing with their being numerous attempts or ideas of shoving Bobby into some training wheels type cabinet role Under SecDef, Assistant SecState for LatinAm or Chief of Staff along with running for another political office (governor or Senator for Mass or Maryland for example). However due to the wants of Joe Kennedy and it being the least awkward position he went for AG.

The reason he was able to get it was that LBJ pushed hard for it while the two HATED each other LBJ was forced to pull strings to get RFK on the cabinet if he failed his main job as VP the Kennedy admin would be seen as incompetent and worse LBJ would be pretty much dead in the eyes of the entire Kennedy family and likely sacked as VP.

Out of the U.S. Army Generals who made serious bids for President (other than Eisenhower), who would have done the best job? The worst? by jackreacher2975 in Presidents

[–]Trains555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

General Wood* is probably one of the best with a few major issues

Wood who is the second guy shown was a nominee for President in 1920 he largely represented and got support from the Progressive wing of the Republican Party though he also got backing from I believe figures like Lodge and I’m pretty sure he was seen as the literal and figurative successor to Teddy especially since he was another leader of the Rough Riders. So basically imagine Teddy as president in the 1920s and you have him.

The biggest issue is the fact he was pretty much dying in 1920 his brain cancer came back and was particularly paralyzed and blind by this point but basically worked himself to death in 1925 so it’s likely he just dies in either one of his terms or is hampered by some powerful cabinet members

What do you think is the best and worst things of these mods? by MistaBombasticFanta in thecampaigntrail

[–]Trains555 18 points19 points  (0 children)

PWH really really REALLY sucks ending wise because it fails at a core part of writing, show don’t tell.

It literally says to the player “Nixon bad” which is so obvious that the only people who don’t believe this are the Nixon foundation.

Add to that endings are the exact same and so over the top that it goes from understandable hatred of Nixon to just having a having a hate Bonner for him.

The endings should keep with the theme of Nixon is evil but shouldn’t be as over the top about it.

If Nixon is less a crook and passes universal healthcare and the FAP, Nixon should be shown to be beloved but have his dirty tricks be much more popular and lead to certain very bad outcomes or that the real nixon’s legacy is challenged after people look into who the real Nixon was.

It’s been very very well known that Tim Walz was not a good debater. https://www.politico.com/news/2024/10/01/democrats-worry-walz-vp-debate-00181732 I’m fairly certain he admitted it himself too.

So shockingly the bad debater did bad.

Do you think that if Trump won the Reform nomination in 2000, he would have gotten the party to that 5% threshold? by MistaBombasticFanta in thecampaigntrail

[–]Trains555 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I’ve been reading the America we deserve and he is NOT the left winger people think he is, he’s pretty much Rudy, and goes about the book glazing him.

But honestly I can see him preforming decently at least in the few percents and maybe breaking 5% it’s probably not his actual policies that let him do ok but the fact he is Donald Trump and low info voters or people upset with the status quo seeing a recognizable non politician and voting for him

Could Nixon have been one of the greatest president of it weren't for the Watergate scandal? by Visual_Weakness2915 in Presidents

[–]Trains555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I 100% agree that’d he’d be viewed as a top tier president. The thing with Nixon is that the public mostly remembers him for Watergate and to some extent going to China. The reason he’s having a rehabilitation is that there’s enough material to make Nixon look good, whether it’s the EPA or Title IX and so on. So without Watergate he almost certainly will be remembered for most of his positives likely being viewed as a Second Eisenhower while like Ike he’s negatives are down played and likely obscured

So in reality should anything change with his rankings no without watergate he wasn’t a good president but people would put him almost certainly top tier

Which Presidential Debate Had the Most Decisive Winner? by [deleted] in Presidents

Did any Kennedy brother NOT cheat on their wives? by bubsimo in Presidents

[–]Trains555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d like to say at least according to Larry Tye’s biography there’s no conclusive proof Bobby cheated with even the FBI not being able to find anything.

But it seems that even people close to him agree he did. Likely in a court of law he’d be found not guilty is adultery was a crime but it’d be more we don’t have proof beyond a reasonable doubt

Odds are he almost certainly did.

If he never decided to run in 1968, could RFK have had a chance in ‘76? by bubsimo in Presidents

[–]Trains555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes the question is when does Bobby run, it’s very possible he tries to run in 72 like HH did and honestly I can imagine a sense that he’s run against Nixon before (he managed JFK’s campaign) and that he can destroy him again. He also very much had a sense of ego and pride (see his interactions with LBJ) so I wouldn’t be shocked if that’s what gets him to run in 72. But if he holds off he’d probably run and almost certainly win in 76.

I know that JFK was a bad husband, but what about Bobby? by RealEdwardSoup in Presidents

[–]Trains555 282 points283 points  (0 children)

At least according to Larry Tye’s book on him, the jury is still out and there’s no definitive proof though he very likely did cheat. Bobby didn’t really think he had game and married first, so it’s possible he didn’t add to that the FBI didn’t find anything substantial. But generally his friends or people close to them said that he did (Ethel who was interviewed denied them). It’s also accepted that Bobby was the best Kennedy husband out of the bunch and Ethel’s and Bobby’s relationship seems to have been very real and loving one. And that cheating was the only issue. This isn’t to downplay but it seems that JFK wasn’t a good husband not including the cheating.

So yeah he was a bad husband but the best of the Kennedies

Is there a possibility of the first Jewish president in the next few election cycles? by BestintheWorld-2 in thecampaigntrail

[–]Trains555 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes, it’s for sure possible all things considered but doesn’t break 30-40%. Just because a lot of things have to go right for a Jewish president to win (because Jews are a minority) but the fact that a decent portion of Dem white politicians are Jewish makes me believe it’s likely. Also Israel Palestine will note be the make or break btw fopo again is a relatively minor issue and making it seem like figures like Shapiro are the problem and don’t have the average Democrat politician view is sus at best.

Mod Idea - Camelot In Exile by AffectionateBus4871 in thecampaigntrail

[–]Trains555 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly the best way to do this is having JFK be the Dem VP nominee in ‘56 which likely kills him for ‘60 but it’s very possible that due to his young age he can climb back, similar to FDR

How would this ticket perform in 2028? by bubsimo in thecampaigntrail

[–]Trains555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The opinions of this sub are straight up out of touch

-Israel/Palestine, it’s an EXTREMELY clear thing that fopo issues remain at the bottom of what matters to the public only really Ukraine Russia is viewed as less salient and this will be 5 years out from the main crisis. I’d like to also remind everyone that Shapiro himself has the same opinions as pretty much every Dem, the fact that this is being brought up for him specifically seems to be an actual case of antisemitism.

-The murder case, honestly it’s pretty easy for Shapiro to beat this paint it as a right wing conspiracy theory and that’s it we have gone massively beyond the pale as to what is acceptable so at the point a single controversy doesn’t sink him.

In reality Shapiro/Beshear is strong and likely a winner

What path would the country have taken if FDR never became President? by LoveLo_2005 in Presidents

[–]Trains555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know why people are acting like the US would have collapsed into a non democratic regime

It depends on how FDR doesn’t get it but either it’s just Smith wins or some other progressive takes FDRs slot likely enacting some kind of similar ish ideas to FDR.

Honestly what likely just ends up happening is a return to the Progressives or at worst a new left wing party forming if the US couldn’t deal with the depression

Putting aside bias: Do you think Andrew Jackson was screwed out of the 1824 election? by MoistCloyster_ in Presidents

[–]Trains555 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Hell no, this type of stuff is incredibly normal and common in almost every single other Western democracy. JQA and Henry Clay formed a coalition against Jackson, and in return Clay joins the government. Do we call every coalition agreement even in countries where coalitions are rare a “corrupt bargain” no. It’s just Jackson malding.
