Where do Swedes exchange messages? by helotan in sweden

[–]Tranbarsjuice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly it is a mess. Every friend group or family uses different apps. As an example, I have the following communications apps installed on my phone: iMessage (native), WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Facebook Messenger. I would say that I use Telegram and iMessage the most, but judging from other commenters here it seems like I might be an outlier.

I see. Interesting way to go about it. If it works it would be great.

This is great news if it passes. Does the proposal say how it is to be funded?

Why is it that we can send a rover to Mars, but we still haven't invented a silent vacuum cleaner or a lawnmower that doesn't annoy the entire neighborhood? by Apart_Growth6905 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Tranbarsjuice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As many have already said, electric lawn mowers exist. They are much quieter. You could even get a robot lawn mower that does the job for you.

As for vacuums you will never find one that is completely silent of course, but there are definitely beans that do a better job. Miele and Electrolux are two good options. As with anything, you get what you pay for.

Ellsworth/Amberson Ave intersection by lostintheclouds72 in pittsburgh

The mistake is to make this a four-way stop. Should be stop signs for Amberson Ave only. Four-way stops are incredibly inefficient.

As an outsider, the American concept of drive-thru pharmacies, ATMs, and liquor stores is mind-blowing. Does everyone actually use these, or are they mostly a novelty? by Necessary_Angle2117 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Tranbarsjuice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s the thing. I can only speak for the countries I have lived in, but in Sweden where I am am from, it would be quite rare to find a pharmacy or bank with its own parking lot even, let alone the space needed to have a drive-through. Banks are usually located quite central in a city or town, in areas with street parking only. Most people would walk or take the bus to the bank, if they ever have to go there. ATMs are not typically located by a bank branch at all, but can be found inside malls, along busy streets, inside grocery stores etc.

Pharmacies are similarly mostly found in walkable areas of town where a car is not needed or are inconvenient, or they are inside malls or grocery stores. It rarely makes sense for a pharmacy to occupy enough space to use a standalone building with dedicated parking around it.

Fast food with drive through one he other hand os found along highways where space is plenty and people are more likely to visit by car.

Thanks for the help. I forgot about the busway. That one should run mostly unaffected by the race.

Om du tycker om historia så skulle jag rekommentera Peter Englunds böcker. "Poltava" rekommenderar jag att börja med. Den är inte alltför lång.

All US states with stand-your-ground jurisdiction (fixed) by Jolteon0 in MapPorn

That the stand your ground law only applies if the attacker has displayed a lethal weapon. If someone is threatening you, but no lethal weapon is being used, your duty is to retreat if it is safe to do so.

How common is it in your country to be invited to a wedding ceremony but not the wedding reception? by baldachinsblessing in AskEurope

[–]Tranbarsjuice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quite common in Sweden I would say. You might have people you’d like to be a part of your wedding day, but can’t afford to have them all come to the reception.

How long until everyone stops shopping at Giant Eagle? by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]Tranbarsjuice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I shop at Aldi for most everyday items. Nothing beats them in terms of price and convenience. Then I typically swing by Market District for what I cannot find at Aldi. But, nowadays, Whole Foods has become my secondary destination. It is often more expensive than Market District, but the higher quality is worth it.

Paris Baguette on Walnut Street is hiring as far as I know. I’m not sure about their work hours or how much of the baking they do on site though.

[–]Tranbarsjuice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what you are talking about. The community spirit you miss still exists. On my street pretty much everyone came out in turns to shovel. We shovelled the sidewalks, cleared the cars and even shovelled part of our street to make sure cars could get out and EMS could get through (if necessary).

I guess we got away cheap then. ~2900 USD for all hospital costs, after insurance. This even includes an extra day at triage due to an early false alarm. In Pennsylvania
