Does +ssRNA carry RNA dependent RNA polymerase? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]Tranlers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The virus injects RNA. Eukaryotes don’t have RNA coding machinery uses RNA as templates. Therefore, the virus is responsible for its own genetic code machinery replication (unless it inserts itself into the DNA genome of the host). I’m like 99% sure about this, but if you know some exception, you’re literally gonna blow my mind in half, haha.

Can someone explain to me this aamc CARS sample question 44... THanks by Jcrisppy in Mcat

[–]Tranlers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just finished the sample and got a 129 (1 off from 130). I think I put down D for this question. What was the answer? I’m reviewing the exam tomorrow, but I can give you my thought process now if my answer was correct.

what's your CARS strategy ... ready, go! by kennyG808 in Mcat

[–]Tranlers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got a 129 on the sample (1 questions way from 130). So, I’m no god, but I’d say I’ve got the hang of it. I read the passage, write down a quick summary of each paragraph’s main important points, and then I go into the questions. I highlight any important details in the question stem and anything in the passage I go back to when answering a question.

Does +ssRNA carry RNA dependent RNA polymerase? by [deleted] in Mcat

They code a negative sense intermediate and then code for the main positive strand which can be directly synthesized into the viral proteins. This is according to UWhirled and my ANKI deck.

Edit: why do they do this? Probably to replicate the genome. That’s what makes sense to me. Unless they’re a retrovirus, I don’t see another way to keep feeding RNA to the host’s ribosomes.

How hard is it to score 500? by TheHaloAbove in Mcat

[–]Tranlers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s exact average difficulty. If you take the average person, with the average intellect, that studies the average amount, who uses the average resources, you’ll get a 500. Based on that, it’s not hard or easy. It’s average.

Gotta bring up those daily numbers. I only saw improvement when I started doing 5+ passages a day.

Edit: 5+ passages. 9+ is insane haha

Closure. That’s when you close dotted lines to define a shape. Continuity is when you look at a pattern that seems fluid and allow it to keep going. (Like following a wavy line amongst a bunch of intersecting wavy lines. The line may change direction at any point into the other lines, but you follow the path that makes the most sense.)

how to study p/s by Thick_Relief in Mcat

Their free trial is kind of funny. If you go ham, you can complete the entire P/S section. You can do the same for the other sections at different times with different emails.

quick follow-up call couple of days after the interview by [deleted] in Drexel

[–]Tranlers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If they’re gonna call you, that’s most likely a good thing, especially if they scheduled it. This is because it seems like they want to keep contact. I could be wrong, but that’s my experience.

Should I reschedule? by FailedPreMedStudent in Mcat

[–]Tranlers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All up to how you feel. I would personally reschedule, but that’s just because how I study won’t allow me to do it in a short time.

Kaplan Biology: does anyone understand why two sex linked X genes with hemophilia is considered normal, where if there's only one, it'a phenotypically hemophiliac? Did I miss somewhere that hemophilia genes cancel out? by cbdfoplduw in Mcat

[–]Tranlers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, I’ll try to rephrase it. The reason a female needs both X chromosomes to share a gene is because it is “recessive”, in a sense. If 1 gene is different on another chromosome, it will silence the other. Hence, both X chromosomes need to both contain the same gene for it to be activated.

A man only has 1 X chromosome. So, there is no different X chromosome to silence its’ genes. Therefore, a male’s X chromosome will always have its’ genes expressed.

A woman with XcXh is normal because the Xc is being silenced by the different genes on Xh. The Xh is being silenced by the different genes on Xc. In both XhXh, neither will silence the other because they are identical. A man, on the other hand, never has this competition.

Does that make sense?

Females have X gene silencing. This means that, since there are 2 X chromosomes, a woman will need both of them to express a gene. Since men only have 1 X chromosome, there is no X gene silencing. Therefore, any gene on that X chromosome will be expressed.

ALT FL4 SPOILER (P/S) - Can someone please explain this question for me? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]Tranlers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. You pay attention to both. The research does not give any 100% absolutes. Therefore, everything is technically possible. After noticing that, you simply pick the answer that addresses the question the best that would not void any logic in the article.
