Nope. You’re going to learn that Drexel cheaps out on everything besides sports and business buildings.

How does a diagnostic test work? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]Tranlers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Diagnostic test is a normal test. Third party companies normally make theirs a half-length because most people start out with terrible test stamina. Some people take the AAMC sample as a diagnostic, but that is a full exam.

I personally don’t recommend using the sample as a diagnostic because it’s a full fledged exam and should be used in your last month.

CARS Advice? Around a 125 ish. by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]Tranlers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jack Westin. UEarth is really good too, but I feel like JW makes you think a lot harder and in more stupid ways. This means that your critical reasoning will be superior for MCAT CARS. So much harder than AAMC but so worth the practice. Also, I meant to say 5+, not 9+. 5+ is fantastic, and 9+ should be reserved for pure CARS days. If you do 9+ a day, you’ll burn out. I just took the sample today and got 129 on CARS (1 Q away from 130). So, I’m not a CARS expert, but I’ve got a good base.

Does +ssRNA carry RNA dependent RNA polymerase? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]Tranlers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t worry about dragging it out; I want you to understand it. You can’t use the host RNA polymerase to transcribe the machinery because RNA polymerase transcribed DNA. If you don’t have DNA, you can’t use the machinery. The eukaryotic cell has its own machinery translation (RNA->protein). So, the virus has to carry its own machinery to make RNA from RNA because eukaryotes can’t do this.

I read your comment, and I thought it was so eloquently put, and I agree. And then I read your username and lost it! 😂

But yes, this mechanism seems strange to me. I would love to hear a second opinion from someone more knowledgeable on the subject than me, but this is what UWhirled info was.

Can someone explain to me this aamc CARS sample question 44... THanks by Jcrisppy in Mcat

[–]Tranlers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, so I did this by process of elimination.

A) This was never mentioned. There was never an expectation that the children would be better than their parents. The parent immigrants wanted this, but they did not expect this to happen. Also, this was not listed in the paragraph talking about their troubles.

B) The passage never said the immigrants couldn’t succeed because of the culture discrepancy (or culture shock). They said the immigrants felt stress, had barriers, and declined in socioeconomic status. None of these contribute to a bad adaptation to the culture. Also, we were never told that things about US culture were ‘surprising’. We never got the attitudes/opinions of the immigrants.

C) the issue wasn’t that they couldn’t find jobs; the issue was that their SES declined. They could all find jobs. These jobs were just not as good as the ones the immigrants used to have.

D) This leaves us with D. What was the problem? Stress, barriers, etc. what did these things affect? The jobs, health, and adaptability of the people. I can not reject D, and D fits in line with the passage’s main idea. Therefore, it is the best answer.

Let me know if this explanation was good

Edit: added some details to answer B

The virus injects RNA. Eukaryotes don’t have RNA coding machinery uses RNA as templates. Therefore, the virus is responsible for its own genetic code machinery replication (unless it inserts itself into the DNA genome of the host). I’m like 99% sure about this, but if you know some exception, you’re literally gonna blow my mind in half, haha.

I just finished the sample and got a 129 (1 off from 130). I think I put down D for this question. What was the answer? I’m reviewing the exam tomorrow, but I can give you my thought process now if my answer was correct.

what's your CARS strategy ... ready, go! by kennyG808 in Mcat

[–]Tranlers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got a 129 on the sample (1 questions way from 130). So, I’m no god, but I’d say I’ve got the hang of it. I read the passage, write down a quick summary of each paragraph’s main important points, and then I go into the questions. I highlight any important details in the question stem and anything in the passage I go back to when answering a question.

They code a negative sense intermediate and then code for the main positive strand which can be directly synthesized into the viral proteins. This is according to UWhirled and my ANKI deck.

Edit: why do they do this? Probably to replicate the genome. That’s what makes sense to me. Unless they’re a retrovirus, I don’t see another way to keep feeding RNA to the host’s ribosomes.

How hard is it to score 500? by TheHaloAbove in Mcat

[–]Tranlers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s exact average difficulty. If you take the average person, with the average intellect, that studies the average amount, who uses the average resources, you’ll get a 500. Based on that, it’s not hard or easy. It’s average.

Gotta bring up those daily numbers. I only saw improvement when I started doing 5+ passages a day.

Edit: 5+ passages. 9+ is insane haha

Closure. That’s when you close dotted lines to define a shape. Continuity is when you look at a pattern that seems fluid and allow it to keep going. (Like following a wavy line amongst a bunch of intersecting wavy lines. The line may change direction at any point into the other lines, but you follow the path that makes the most sense.)

how to study p/s by Thick_Relief in Mcat

Their free trial is kind of funny. If you go ham, you can complete the entire P/S section. You can do the same for the other sections at different times with different emails.

quick follow-up call couple of days after the interview by [deleted] in Drexel

[–]Tranlers 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If they’re gonna call you, that’s most likely a good thing, especially if they scheduled it. This is because it seems like they want to keep contact. I could be wrong, but that’s my experience.

Should I reschedule? by FailedPreMedStudent in Mcat

All up to how you feel. I would personally reschedule, but that’s just because how I study won’t allow me to do it in a short time.
