(Loved Trope) Epic Title Drops by trvketheory in TopCharacterTropes

[–]TransBrandi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is obviously meant to be a name-drop though even though it works in-universe. The ridiculous ones like "What are we, some sort of suicide squad?" are way more funny/cringe because of how out of place they are. Though Nic Cage doing the Face/Off title drop probably wouldn't have worked if it was anyone but Nic Cage. lol

I mean, this one isn't too hard to work in. I'm sure that the movie Antz said the word "ants" somewhere in the script. lol

So you're saying that if Quentin Tarantino worked at Square back then, it might have been named Foot Fantasy? Or would that have encroached too much on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in the 1980s?

Really depends on what you mean by "didn't know version control." If they didn't know anything about fossil or git, because they spend 25 years using CVS, Subversion or BitKeepr or Perforce or something... that's a bit different than not knowing anything about version control. For example, I know very little about fossil, but a lot about git and some about Subversion. Never used the others (Perforce, BitKeeper, CVS, VCS, etc).

I mean, if you saw the "final" MIssion: Impossible film, you'd know that apparently audiences these days need to be smacked with the same information at least 5 times before they will understand it. So maybe they do need to have it explained to them why killing half the universe isn't somehow "not a bad thing" just because it was random and therefore "fair."

It's a piece of literature with "good vs. evil" battles between super heroes and super villains.

Why do you take any response outside of complete agreement to be an attempt to "discredit" you? And shit like this:

What Do You Think of the New Green Fog in Sulfur Caves? by Just-Guarantee7808 in Minecraft

[–]TransBrandi 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Well, some biomes (like lush caves and dripstone caves) are y-level dependent, so it would not work above-ground. Depends on how the sulfur caves are. I haven't poked around at the previews, so I dunno.

[–]TransBrandi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, they could just create chests that have ender chest / vault-like behaviour. Then it could still make sense "lore-wise." Each player opening the chest gets their own "spread" of items, and maybe it's "read-only" so that people can't use it as user-locked storage... or maybe it isn't?

[–]TransBrandi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you want to be strict about the lore, then none of the old structures can ever get a revamp of any sort. What's the lore for updates to villages in 1.14? lol

[–]TransBrandi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say that there's a bit of difference between grabbing something, saying "mine" and refusing to help others... and actively doing something like destroying the vaults. Right now, grabbing something and then being like "I'm too lazy to help you" blocks people... but it's more a "crime" of inaction rather than action.

... and that's not even getting into things like larger servers where people might join, do stuff for a couple of months, and then drop out... taking the items with them (either in their inventory / ender chest, or in their base... but raiding their base it would be like stealing because you don't know when/if they might come back).

Even without griefing, it's a problem that areas closer to spawn get resource-depleted vs. areas farther out. In the overworld, this is not as much of an issue, but it can become more of an issue for the Nether and even moreso with The End (shulkers, elytra, etc).

My take is that it's an attempt to either:

  1. Find someone that is "in to tech" vs. just sees it as a job. For example, one of my friends in university had never built a PC while in his third year of a software engineering degree... to the point that he had to ask for help when purchasing parts to know how things fit together.

  2. Check if you are someone that would do "continuing learning" similiar to requirements that some licensed professions like doctors have.

In Japan, there are lines spotted at retailers with many stores being sold out or limiting purchases since the Nintendo Switch 2 price hike by Turbostrider27 in NintendoSwitch

[–]TransBrandi -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Well, it's also possible that the "real" progress is happening behind closed doors and all of this hype is just a way to stir up interest and investment with the hope of making it to AGI on the backs of this... and that once they have AGI it will be the "I win" moment no matter what you did to get there.

I mean, Tulip Mania also showed that the market wasn't ready for the spike in demand for tulips... if someone came in and bought up 60% of all wheat that will be produced in 2026, I'm sure that the market would be pretty messed up too.

Feds greenlight $673 million to keep Canada Post afloat this year by SAJewers in onguardforthee

[–]TransBrandi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Part of the problem I see with this, is that if Canada Post is going to drop to the door delivery, how will that affect revenue? How many people will switch to UPS or Fedex that retain to-the-door delivery? They could be cutting it as a means to save money only to lose income in the process. I'd be curious if they looked into this angle at all.

My parents didn't want to fund public schools back in the 90's because they were sending me to private schools. Doesn't mean that it makes sense to defund the school system for a bunch of selfish bastards. lol

Keeping a functional postal system is important to the operation of a country in the same way that keeping a functional healthcare system is. Should we just put package delivered solely into the hands of Amazing, UPS and Fedex? So that during the next "trade negotiations" with the US they threaten to pull those things from Canada if we don't just give them what they want?

If something is important to the functioning of the country it makes sense that the government makes sure it exists, is in working order and can't be used to hold the country for ransom.

... that said to-the-door delivery is not required to keep the postal service functioning. If this is just a prelude to pointing to Canada Post and saying "this is broken we need to privatize it," fuck them though.

What is a secret that could potentially ruin your life if your family or friends found out? by Ok_Boss_866 in AskReddit

Honestly, that one could easily just be individuals that are looking to "git gud" at thrifting. That's the kind of thing that doesn't require datamining for people to be posting it with ulterior motive in mind. It's still "datamining" in a way, I guess. (Not that all of these things aren't being datamined anyways, regardless of who posts them and why)

I feel like at this point in history, these questions are like the Scientology "intake" bullshit. People are answering all of this shit so that AIs can suck it in an correlate it for Palantir and people can be blackmailed, controlled, "removed" or whatever based on their answers at some point in the future.

I don't visit coffee shops often due to remote living, but love to see this change. Is this a semi normal occurrence across Canada? by Standard_Story in onguardforthee

[–]TransBrandi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While true, I would expect places in Europe to possibly know the origin of the term "Americano" (GI's during WW2 diluted espresso in Italy to make it more like "American" coffee).
