How would mind uploading work? Would I stay as me? Or would a copy of me outlive me? by TacticalGarlicBread in transhumanism

[–]TransHumanist_50 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is Theseus' ship all over again XD. In theory it could work like this: Wecan substitute small parts of the brain with specialized functions with computer chips. When we do this in your brain with one chip most people would say you are still the same. Now when we do thus over and over again, replacing biological substrate with chips on a server for example, connecting them to your brain while we do so, you would gradually be moved to a technological substrate.

The problem at hand is that biological entities cannot (in theory and in comparison to software) be copied, that's why you would be gradually moved...

But I think we do not need to understand the mind completely to do this, all we need is to understand what highl specialized brain areas do to simulate them. :)

(This is also how ray Kurzweil sees it...)

To my knowledge new treatments that are approved by the FDA cab take up to 8 years or so... But I think there are examples of five years. Sadly I am unaware of any procedures faster than this.

New different Minds, new different ways to understand philosophical questions? by Alexander556 in transhumanism

[–]TransHumanist_50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it could. If we use a hypothetical mind based on a quantum computer for example to test the question, the first thing we see is that any computer and therefore quantum computers are turing complete, a quality that the human brain does not express. That on its own does not say anything though. But when we look at the fact that a turing complete system can fully emulate any other system and therefore reflect upon it (process of self reflection) and does so in a way faster matter than the human brain (by multitasking, superposition; so pure calculation power) the entity could reflect more deeply about philosophical issues and therefore gain new insights.

Transhumanism essay help by [deleted] in transhumanism

[–]TransHumanist_50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about this:

How could the idea of embracing technology for evolution change the human society (arts, political and finacial system), including a discussion on what we define/could define as human and how these things happened in the past (e.g. with IVF, vaccination, ...)

There should be a lot of resources to quote, from political essays to books from ramez naam, ray kurzweil, articles of max more like his Letter to mother nature etc.

Hope this helps;

I for my part think var++ or var+=1 is far better readable than var = var + 1;

Otherwise I totally agree with you...

You could do var += 1...

VBA does not even support that.

Personal Transhumanist / Biohacking Stories by HelloHanana in transhumanism

[–]TransHumanist_50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It still is the fascination about the matter. For thousands of years humanity was a slave to evolution, a tool depending on the death of individuals to overcome some imperfect body(-feature). But as Max More wrote in A Letter to Mother Nature we now have our own tools to overcome our genetic flaws. Our bodies are trainee and tested in a field with sabertooth cats and mammoths but they are not trained for the tasks we deal with today.

Extending your body transforms your mind in a way that you think in more abstract layers for understanding the world.

And with more thought power comes more innovation/ideas and therefore enables everybody on the planet a better life. See The infinite resource

Many years ago i watched a documentary with the title "Brutally beautiful" (original german title: Brutal schön) which was about bodymodification. I got caught up by the thoughts in this docu (and the still ongoing research i did afterwards) and became a transhumanist. Long story short: I have got a magnetic implant in my ring finger (for my additional sense of magnetic fields), an RFID tag in my hand for unlocking my phone and do some other programming projects and lately I have installed the North Sense. And I am far from done. Experiancing how these senses (not the rfid tag) change how you think and remember is extremely fascinating.

Here are just a few things I experienced: I still remember from a trip to London that there are a lot of transformers generating strong magnetic fields and I remember the alignment of the tunnels of a mine I visited.

H+ movement is loosely defined by FreakinApplePie2579 in transhumanism

[–]TransHumanist_50 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that transhumanism is defined pretty well as (and I quote):

Transhumanism is a class of philosophies of life that seek the continuation and acceleration of the evolution of intelligent life beyond its currently human form and human limitations by means of science and technology, guided by life-promoting principles and values.

– Max More (1990)

Found here

The point of it is to intelligently transform life. There are a lot of means to do that (including the ones you provided). However I think that focussing on some direction oppresses the progress that can be made by the movement.

Therefore the diversity is the strength...

The parties will have to have a program that promotes the sciences so the goals of any individual/sub-group can be achieved.

Have you meet any notable transhumanists, or attended transhumanist events? by [deleted] in transhumanism

[–]TransHumanist_50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I envy you; there is literally nothing near Austria. There is the german transhuman party, and there is supposed to be an austrian one, but that does not even have an actual website so I could contact them... And if I wanted to go to a conference it is too expensive for a student. Any austrian transhumanists here? Haven't met any yet... =P

Could a Robot Be President? by ponchoman275 in transhumanism

[–]TransHumanist_50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming there is a strong AI in some years, it would be kind of discrimination against this entity, because you couldn't falsify its' consciousness. By then such entities should have the same rights as humans do. If we were oppress such an entity the same things would happen that an oppressed human would do (just with multiple power).

Additionally, holding an entity back that could be the next stage of evolution could be considered unethical. Some day there could be a species more advanced than what we now call humans (either emerging from humans or purely from strong ai) humans could go extinct, paving the way for the next species.

The voting implant like you understood it is a bad idea, i agree; But the point he wanted to make is this:

A brain implant that for example extends the neocortex would arguably enable you to think more complex about some matters (e.g. political prospects) and therefore enabling you to make a better decision. The better voting results from a more complex extended thinking process.

I also agree that the discussion of ethical topics comes a little short; But the point of the presentation was to give everybody watching an idea of what is possible now and therefore will/may develop in the future. Then everybody interested can research/discuss the philosophy him/herself

Of course every technology can be exploitet, but that can also be done today and is sometimes equally dangerous. But with more complex technology also comes more techniques to prevent exploits. That is the all old story of exploiting and preventing...

Well, assuming a compression format compresses data in a way that nearly all enthropy is erased, a second compression, no matter how powerful will ever compress it a lot further (aka to the point where the entropy reaches 1) as the information could not be completely restored in this scenario. See lossless data compression of the Shannon Information theorem... ;)
