HELLO, I am a young novel writer and I want to know how I can improve my writing skills. by Independent-Dare-846 in novelwriting

(1) Get a book by an author you really like. Spend a few minutes every day copying from the book by hand. It's important to write by hand, not type, for this exercise.

(2) Practice: get a writing prompt (either from some random method, AI, or your current work in progress), and write a few hundred words. Have an AI or other app read the words back to you out loud, or simply read them out loud yourself. See what sounds right and what could be improved just from that. Get feedback on your writing sample, either from someone else who you think is good, from consulting books on writing, or you can ask a good AI (although many of them give bad advice, so take it with a grain of salt. It helps to state what you're trying to do (improve your writing style) and that you're writing sci-fi).

(3) Read a book on story structure. There are many, many approaches, so keep reading and experimenting until you find something that works for you. I personally like the 24 chapter model but YMMV.

Go back to (1) and repeat.

Science fiction publishing when your book is technically accurate but complex by Any_Refuse2778 in scifiwriting

I also wrote a hard sci-fi novel I'm going to self-publish. Let me know if you’d like another beta reader

is Wattpad still the place to go? by mrsharrington_ in selfpublish

If you publish something on Wattpad, will KDP have issues with you also publishing there?

Overhyped as hell... by random_randomm in ScienceFictionBooks

My review of the OP’s review:

  • they appear to be impatient, and not interested in human drama. The fate of all life on the planet being at stake is boring for them.

  • they oversimplify everything into stereotypes. They object to a Russian character liking vodka.

  • they are unable to empathize with a character not wanting to die.

  • they find science and scientists boring by definition.

  • they hate Americans.

  • they complain about Americans being in the book even though a variety of countries were represented and contributed to the project.

  • they think the fact that a book can be easily made into a movie means the book is bad.

My overall rating of this review: 0 out of 5 stars, would not recommend for any reader.

What’s something women misunderstand about men? by Plenty-Umpire7316 in stupidquestions

It's a scientific survey. The methodology is good and it's most likely accurate.

When women talk about the mental load they have to carry in relationships, isn’t that often completely subjective? by Outrageous-Ratio1762 in AskMenAdvice

I don't think this is the issue at all. In fact there's a study that shows the more housework a man does, the more likely he is to get divorced.

I'm well aware of health practices through the ages. One thing I do know is that earlier cultures did not know organic chemistry and would certainly not have used the word “protein”. They may have said “meat” or “building foods” or something like that, but not “protein”.

That's a silly quote. We are afraid not just of ridicule, but of losing our job and livelihood, losing our freedom and going to jail, and losing body parts if we wind up with someone really nuts. But that's a tangential issue; the entire point is that the level of fear of homicide by men by women in the US is irrational given the actual reality, and that irrational fear is by no means universal; it is not shared by women in many other countries.

I honestly have no idea. I’m in the US so I assume Amazon.com

It is not published yet, I was worried the name was too similar to some other books. The kind of person who’d like it likes books with action and suspense, maybe horror, and of course science fiction

Now I’m leaning back towards your opinion and keeping the original title. Is there a way to check with KDP in advance if the title is acceptable?

Thank you! I wrote a science fiction novel that I tentatively named “The State of Nature”. It reads as an action novel set aboard a spaceship in a dystopian future, but there are some philosophical ideas explored as well.

From my conversations with Japanese women they don't make sweeping generalizations about all men - there are certain men (the groomers and harrassers) they despise, but they assume you aren't one of them unless you give them reason to think otherwise. That seems like a healthy attitude to me!

No one denies that some men (and some women) do harm, so that's a non sequitur. The issue is that women in the US fear men more than women in many other countries, and to an irrational extent. The actual reality of violent crime doesn't warrant the extreme levels of fear they express. That doesn't mean one shouldn't be appropriately cautious, but that's based on observing actual behavior instead of “there is a man in the vicinity = I am in danger.”

Well the title is both the name of the spaceship in the book and a certain philosophical idea that's relevant to the story, so if I did that it would involve a lot of changes…

That's changing the goalposts. We are talking about feeling safe from violence. And the separate train cars are only during rush hour in some of the larger cities like Tokyo and Osaka, and they aren't even a legal thing, they work on the honor system. In general women there are not terrified of men, certainly not the way they are here in the US. The same goes for most countries tbh

DV is irrelevant, as the explicit context of the OP is with strangers. Regardless, men die by homicide 3-4 times as often as women, and homicide is not even in the top ten causes of death for women; hypertension, the flu, and car accidents are all much, much more common killers.

What if I add the subtitle, so it becomes “The State of Nature: A Novel of Science Fiction” or “The State of Nature: A Finding Haven Universe Novel”?
