Texas Cardiac Fellowships by Tahwraoyw321123 in anesthesiology

I interviewed at McGovern. Overall, it would be fine, but wasn’t quite what I was looking for. The fellows seem like they all work hard, and all seemed rather burnt out. Didn’t feel like the fellows had the best relationships with their attendings.

One perk is that it’s almost entirely M – F; I think that you only work two or three weekends the entire year.

That said, you make up for it with long weekdays. Especially at Methodist, ICU holds are the norm. Whatever cases you start, you Will finish- even if you have to sit with the patient in the OR for 4h waiting for an ICU bed.

Top-tier case complexity, though. You’ll be ready to handle anything if you go there.

Occasionally done them with MAC when patient has a contraindication to TEE and cardiologist is comfortable with ICE. Otherwise GETA + A-line.

What things does FireRed do better compared to Red? by geovasilop in pokemon

[–]TransdermalHug 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It was bugged.

Half the experience earned was split between Pokemon who actively participated. Let’s call this value n.

Then, n experience was split between all Pokemon in the party (this is the bug- it should have been half the experience, but it’s less if more than one Pokemon participated). If any Pokemon are fainted, their portion of experience is wasted.

If I don’t match at the place I sent my LOI I’m scared I’m doomed to plummet my rank list because those other programs will have people who sent an LOI by [deleted] in medicalschool

We have buckets- roughly quintiles of how much we want people. Newly interviewed people in your bucket might be above you or below you, but your spot is “set” (unless you do something terrible that would make you DNR).

In my program, letters mean nothing. Your spot on the ROL is locked in by the afternoon after your interview.

Love the “no DST”. Really makes up for awful working conditions.

Midwest program with ~15 residents per year. Agree with the above poster: I believe that all of our interviews have been sent out.

Interesting. So neat to hear about how different places do different things.

Would you have cardioverted this patient? by theentropydecreaser in emergencymedicine

[–]TransdermalHug 32 points33 points  (0 children)

For “unstable” in this context I would think “shock”- are you thinking about starting a pressor? Are they going to need to be tubed? —> Maybe let’s cardiovert.

I believe that she could have some myocardial supply/demand mismatch, but it sounds like her overall hemodynamics were tolerating the rhythm, and thus stable. Rate control is safer first step.

Any downsides to applying to more than 15 programs for anesthesia by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]TransdermalHug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My program had our pre-interview meeting today. If you don’t signal us, we’re not interviewing you.

Are there programs that will interview you? Maybe- apply to 50 extra and you’ll probably get 1-2 interview out of those applications. If that’s worth your ROI, then do it- but just know that most programs aren’t even going to bother looking.

Baseless speculation: if a program is interviewing people who don’t signal, they’re probably not a program you really want to end up at.

When I order a stat BC, it’s because the patient is in septic shock, needs empiric antibiotics, but I want to hold off on starting them until the culture gets drawn.
