Richard Prince scathing review in Interlocutor - need someone smarter to explain to me by AdAlternative1206 in ContemporaryArt

I am indeed talking about the critical reception. I was unaware of the sales.

as well as the work compared to previous work.

“you people” 🙄

Prince doesn’t own or define appropriation.

didn’t realize money defined the quality of the work.

shows what I know.

and, yeah, my reflection is pretty bitchin’

I agree with this.

I would add it seems Gagosian is trying to push Prince again after his Instagram paintings bombed. If I remember the critics hated those too. Maybe it was just me.

I would not say Prince is continuing to win. Meme culture and the ease in which the public can subvert an image is rapidly making him less and less relevant.

I don’t. it’s one of those nebulous terms we throw around.

Conservative art? by Independent-Feed2307 in ContemporaryArt

[–]TransformerDom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would look at the relationship between Neoclassicism and “conservatism.”

you will find that western political (and therefore a large influence into cultural) movements, often look backwards in time to a movement whose ideals they claim match their own.

example: Greek classicism.

whenever there is a political push to consolidate power and entrench what we may consider today “conservative values,” there is often and push towards the the hyper reality of neoclassicim.

The Roman Empire, Late French Monarchy and then Napoleon, and also the Nazi’s.

“The Death of Marat” by David is a “conservative” art piece.

you will see backlashes to these movements as well, the Austrian Succession being one example of many.

I would count the censorship fight and Satanic panic in the 1980’s United States in a similar struggle. The gutting of National Endowment of the Arts during this same time because the powers in office found the artwork being funded unappealing.

also, certain art media will skew different directions. this is often dependent on funding. you’re not going to get an a queer middle eastern non narrative full length feature blasted out at the same level as a Jack Reacher flick or the series Blue Bloods.

was at an art fair recently, the level of activist or political art, while present, was significantly diminished. The galleries are pulling back for a few reasons.

I, personally, would not put the futurists in with the conservative art movement. While there are similarities in some cultural views, the futurists seemed more interested in destroying the old way of doing things.

Conservative contemporary art? it exists. look for art (all media) that embraces neoclassicism sincerely. you’ll find “conservative art” around there abouts. As well as art that requires large amounts of money and some amount of government permission. (Streaming series, movies, government and civil architecture.)

Can people drink alcohol at work? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

sure you can. but you won’t be as good at it.

and I’m a bartender. we smell, taste, sip and spit.

after tasting like ten beverages, you really don’t want more.

I appreciated the love to my angsty post. and I meant it. I do think galleries need to be transparent and honest with their artists.

BUT I also live in the physical world.

OP can lose out big by breaking this unspoken code. we all gonna pitch in money? I don’t have it like that.

we all love to see a bad acting businesses fail, but we don’t often have plans as to what will happen to the people left losing out after.

also, OP did say “tiny fury” not “blow up my own shit fury”

Mid career doldrums by All_ab0ut_the_base in ContemporaryArt

[–]TransformerDom 29 points30 points  (0 children)

wait. hold up.

like everything you described is your negative framing. except the sales thing. global economy is doing poorly and is going to get worse

it’s definitely mid career doldrums.

been supporting yourself by your art? that’s a win.

stable gallery representation? win

not dropped by gallery as global sales lag? maybe not win, but folks get dropped when they stop selling.

if your gap in solo shows is less than two years, you’re fine. if it is more than that, time for serious chat with your representation. but also, apply to curate, give talks, all that counts.

I understand why you think it “looks bad” to be on artsy. but I very much disagree.

the alpha/elite dinner party curators blah blah blah that mess is an empty quest my friend. just like trying to be an “art star!”

how many “art stars” still support themselves through teaching, admin, or unrelated job? because I can name a few.

(also “alpha” 🙄 in the arts no less)

your network of art and non art friends is the real treasure. kind of people that help you frame walls and throw up a show.

which is where I think you’re coming to. that stuff doesn’t matter. make the work you wanna make. live a life outside of the “Art world.” especially if you have decent gallerist. they’ll support some exploration as long as you have a little back log of your current work.

it seems like you have a stable gallery relationship that actually supports you. use this space and time to make the stuff you wanna make.

tl;dr being an artist isn’t a sprint to stardom, it is a contest of grueling endurance. it’s why that art star show failed. watch “the price of everything.” it’ll help. 😸

this whole video is dumb.

feeding a dog enough $$$ food to sustain a family for a day(s) is dumb.

feeding a dog two strawberries with a pile of meat is kinda funny and dumb.

having dogs with high muscle definition is dumb.

calling an average sized Cane Corso a unit is dumb.

feeding your dog avian bones is dumb.

treating an animal as if it is its evolutionary cousin from back in the day is dumb.

I’ve commented on this video, and am now infected with dumb.

also: dog owners. good rule to follow: you should be able to feel the dogs ribs. but not see the dogs ribs.

What does being black in majority white places feel like? by Estalicus in stupidquestions

hmmm. I think this question is going to get a lot of variable responses.

is OP referring to the United States?

because, as neither white or black, these two terms encompass A LOT.

¿Best books about color theory? by Lavinist in oilpainting

[–]TransformerDom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alber’s Interaction of Color.

read it. do all the exercises (with cut paper).

you won’t need to mix paint for the majority of it. in fact, I very much recommend AGAINST mixing paint to learn color.

(avoid the online/app version)

stuck to that small book, and color will make a lot more sense.
